WINNO'S WINNERS - DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 10

By Darren Winningham | Friday, February 9, 2018

DOOMBEN RACES SATURDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2018

Doomben this week!

A massive ten race program this weekend – after the meeting was abandoned last weekend.

This weekend they are forecasting very hot weather. The track is currently rated “SOFT” and the rail will be out 3.0 metres the entire course this weekend. I think we will see a “GOOD” track come Saturday and I have done my selections on that basis.

I think I may keep it short and sweet this week – they fields are large and some races are more open than the Sydney Heads …

Well here goes!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 1

A distance race to start the day.

I am finding it hard to split two of my favourites here – Get On The Grange (2) and Kirini (6).

I like the recent runs of Get On The Grange in Sydney. He makes a trek to Doomben this weekend and gets a firm track. He runs best on firm going.

Kirini (6) is back down in the weights – she is sure to be competitive.

A nice race here to open the day.

Selections: 2-6-3-1

****************************************************************************************************

Race 2

Il Riccio (11) from the Tony Gollan Racing team has been trialling well and has drawn barrier 6. Jim Byrne aboard that will do me!

I am not knocking the favourite Mr Marbellouz from Kevin “Kempy” Kemp stables. I just think he may be under the odds here so I am looking for some value.

The other runner from Toowoomba is Whycatchim (6) who debuted with a solid win for the Ben Currie yards with Beau Appo aboard. This weekend Jeff Lloyd takes the ride, so he is one to keep your eye on.

The other runner that stays under notice is Lifesaver (8) (probably ironic with the hot weather forecast this weekend).

Last preparation this one just did not come up. The trials of late have been average, however, I have an opinion of this Matthew Dunn runner and he may just trail them here with some speed in the race and swoop late!

Selections: 11-3-6-8

****************************************************************************************************

Race 3

“Kempy” has another nice chance here. He could be looking for a race to race Saturday double – not sure if he has achieved this before but he has a great chance of doing it on Saturday! His Spirit of Boom filly Plumaro (4) debuted at her home track at Toowoomba with Kempy’s apprentice Nick Keal in the saddle. She smashed them – well destroyed them all winning by 9.25 lengths on debut. She ran some nice time as well!

This weekend Jag Guthmann-Chester is aboard, and she looks well placed.

The only danger I can find from the others is the David Vandkye trained Baccarat Baby (6) who has been trialling well at the Sunshine Coast and is a debutant here.

Selections: 4-6-1-3

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Not a fan of this race.

I think that Snitz (1) will be competitive, however, I think he may need the run.

I am hoping that the second up form of Umberto (3) from the Gollan Racing stables can stand up and stepping up to 1200 metres I think that he is nice odds at $6. The stable mate is Shesees Everything (8) who has been impressive. This could be a Gollan quinella!

Basara (4) is a nice type from the Tony Sears yards and again is stepping back up to 1200 metres which I think will assist her chances. Emma Ljung takes the ride and her 3-kilogram claim will be handy.

Selections: 3-8-4-1

****************************************************************************************************

Race 5

This race is open.

On one hand you have the Robert Heathcote trained Pinch Passion (1) who has won 2 races and seems to be well placed here despite the large weight of 59 kilograms. On the other hand, you have the impressive Michael Costa maiden runner Epic Rant (12) who gives the impression that he is looking for the mile.

I am going for Pinch Passion (1) to prevail.

Chris Waller has two runners. Iowa (4) was hampered at the start last time out and it may be worthwhile to overlook that run. Another Dollar (5) won last start at the Gold Coast over 1400 metres with a gem of a ride by Glen Colless. They both are serious contenders in this field.

Selections: 1-12-4-5

****************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Cannot get keen on this race.

For the record I'm going with Bidii Babe (6) with the Heathcote/Ron Stewart team looking for a race to race double.

Old North (5) has come north from the Godolphin yards after performing well in some recent trials. Maybe in this class of race he can put a win on the board.

She’s Miss Devine (9) had a trail on Tuesday this week and won it easy. Probably not a bad hit out for this race.

Zin Zan Eddie (6) was first up for the new stable last start at the Gold Coast. He is now trained by Helen Page and I tell you what the run was extraordinary – only beaten by 1.75 lengths. He has a good record second up and Helen has given him a month between runs. I would not be surprised if this old war horse pops up here in this grade.

Land Office (12) from the Darryl Ward stables has Quayde Krogh in the saddle and his 3 kilogram gets this gelding in very well at the weights.I have been waiting for him to get a run over a distance like this!

Selections: 6-5-9-10 rough chance 12

****************************************************************************************************

Race 7

Seriously – a Benchmark 70 with 23 runners nominated! I think I have more chance of winning the $21 million in the Lotto drawer scheduled for Saturday night than finding the winner and trifecta here – but I will have a crack!

Dream Master (10) from Edmonds Racing on the Gold Coast comes off a nice win on Australia Day at Doomben when he led all the way. He will race on the speed and I think will be hard to get past.

Rich Affair (4) has been unlucky in recent runs and drops back in class here and drawn in barrier 3 could be the hardest to beat.

Now if you all remember I did pump one on Magic Millions day and last weekend (before the rain washed us out) that has opened at around $51 in the early markets. This runner is trained by Troy Pascoe – I’m Alone (2).

In the run on the Gold Coast Magic Millions Day the gelding was drawn poorly and really had no luck in the run, however, still found gaps in the straight and ran a magnificent race being beaten just under 3 lengths. I think from barrier 1 this weekend and Michael Murphy in the saddle and three kilograms off he is a big chance! $51 this weekend – a great each way chance!

Happy Hooves (7) has drawn nicely and will be near the lead as well – maybe a place chance.

There are some other rough chances – the one that stands out to me is the stable mate of Happy Hooves (7) – Ruling Queen (21) - who has won two recent trials in good fashion since entering the Tony Gollan stables. This one may be at massive odds if she gets a run and even though she is eight I think that she may race well fresh.

Selections: 10-4-1-7 rough chance 11,13,21

****************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Doubt Defying (4) won well last start at Sunshine Coast – has had a fortnight between runs and should get a nice trail the race behind the speed however, has drawn very wide.

Chris Munce trains First Crush (1) who was impressive winning here 3 weeks ago. This runner goes well, and I think once he wins he normally goes on with it. Look for another solid run this weekend.

Kelly Schweida has Binary (17) who is third up this weekend – maybe a rough chance with Jason Taylor in the saddle. I wonder whether his good luck charm – his daughter - will be there! If she is there they are going to be hard to beat!

The Heathcote stable is again well represented by Kubis (8). He is drawn well in barrier 3 and he likes to lead – maybe Ronnie Stewart can get some cheap sectionals in front and run them into the ground.

Vaulting Ambition (11) trained by Chris Anderson finished a close second last start behind Doubt Defying so he must be given another chance in this field.

Selections: 8-4-1-17 rough chance 11

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

Wow – it just keeps getting harder!

Class 3 over 1350 metres with 24 nominations – give me a break!

I have gone for some value here with the Graeme Green runner Guissola (15) who I thought showed some super form over the Brisbane Winter Carnival and gets well in here at the massive odds of $151 (opened that price on Wednesday – WINNO grabbed some of them odds) – he is now into $41 maybe because of the scratchings or maybe it was my small bet! He trialled well around ten days ago at Deagon with has Michael Hellyer in the saddle. He has drawn well compared to some of the more fancied runners and I think I will be gambling each way on this one.

I did tip this one last weekend – so I do have to back up!

The Robert Heathcote trained Suggan Buggan (10) was well backed at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day. He was sent out as favourite and ran a super race. This weekend he has drawn terrible in barrier 17 and he will need some serious luck from out there.

Lyricist (12) was first up a fortnight ago and the run was solid. She has a nice second up record – however, has drawn wide as well and may struggle from the barrier.

The David Vandyke trained Deep Image (7) is the early market favourite and was sent out favourite first up from a spell. I think after reviewing the video he will strip fitter for that run and has won two out of three starts second up.

The Tony Gollan pair of Brigadoon Rise (11) and Salmanazar (6) are both drawn well and short in the markets – they will be very competitive.

Selections: 15-10-12-7 rough chances 6 & 11

****************************************************************************************************

Race 10

Matthew Dunn has Hanwritten (4) engaged here and he comes off a 22-week spell. The two barrier trials that he has had looked very solid and I think first up over 1200 metres he looks well placed and well-drawn for the assignment.

The Tony Gollan trained Of The Day (14) returned to the winners stall last start in a dominant performance and if Hanwritten (4) is not ready or has any chinks in his armour this is the one to beat.

Oink (10) finished a gallant second to Of The Day (14) last start – he could be ready to pop up here this week at nice odds.

Courtza King (8) is another Gollan Racing runner who looks well placed. He has drawn wide in barrier 15 and Lani Fancourt will need some luck from out there.

Quick Ketch (13) goes up in grade here but he is a nice type – he is looking to string two city wins together. He has drawn nicely in barrier in 8 and I think with the anticipated speed in the race he could be one running home late.

Selections: 14-4-13-10 rough chances 8 & 11

*****************************************************************************************************

Well that is it for the individual races at Doomben.

I would suggest you punt carefully – these fields are large and could pop up some rough results!

Oh yes, this weekend the battle of NSW (WINNO) versus QLD (FLEMO) will continue. So be sure to check out our Facebook profiles for our up to date tips and thoughts on Saturday morning. I am a little worried this weekend as he is in tremendous form!

****************************************************************************************************

Looks like a battle royal between Jim Bryne, Jag Guthmann-Chester and Jeff Lloyd.

In fact, it may all come down to the last race! I think I will have something on JAG at a big price and save on Jeff Lloyd.
