By Graham Potter | Sunday, September 20, 2009
Ipswich, September 17, 2009. Track - Good. Rail - out 7.5m. Class 2 Handicap - 1700m. Time: 1-43.97 1Warrior Within; 2 Channel Crossing; 3 Kenny's Magic.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bruce Hill: “He’s always shown me a lot of ability but it has taken a long time to get him to do things right. From the (wide) barrier, we were always going to ride him quiet. Early days he wouldn’t relax. He just wanted to go hard all the time.
The other day here (when fourth behind Cornwall Park) he relaxed good and he relaxed good today. He hit the line well. He should get over ground. He’s out of a Volksraad mare.”
Jockey Paul Hammersley: “We’ve just taken a little while to try and work him out. We always sort of had him in 1200 ... 1400m races and he just wasn’t sort of really finishing the races off. We’ve been trying to get him to settle in his track-work and whatever. We wanted to ride him cold and he relaxed pretty good and it looks like he could have a bit of a future over a mile.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: After riding in race 3, B. Pengelly was examined by the ambulance officers and stood down from his engagement on Tyrconnel.
Teaattheritz struck the rail in the horse stall area prior to the race. The filly was examined by the veterinary surgeon prior to the race and found to have a superficial abrasion on the back, however Teaattheritz was cleared to start.
Contours, which was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Howgoodsthat was examined by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers after the horse was kicked by another runner. Howgoodsthat was cleared to start.
Approaching the 800m, Economist (J. Byrne) and Teaattheritz (G. Colless) brushed on a number of occasions. A short distance later, Economist commenced to race fiercely and after clipping the heels of Channel Crossing (L. Cassidy), shifted out, which resulted in Tyrconnel, which had commenced to move to the outside of Economist, clipping the heels of that horse, resulting in D. Griffin being dislodged from Tyrconnel. After considering the matter, stewards accepted the evidence that Economist was obliged to shift out at that point as he was in difficulties on the heels of Channel Crossing, and therefore did not take any direct action.
Wynnum High (C. Reith) was held up when unable to obtain clear running rounding the home turn and in the home straight and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider. Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, Hock It (A. Spinks) was held up and unable to improve, and near the 300m had to be steadied off the heels of Wynnum High (C. Reith).
Inside the final 100m, Chevaux Vapeur (M. Cahill) was inconvenienced when taken in on to Hock It (A. Spinks) by the riderless Tyrconnel. In this incident, Hock It was also momentarily crowded for room. Over the concluding stages, Crimson Fire (R. Goltz) had to be checked to avoid the heels of the riderless Tyrconnel.
G. Colless, rider of Teaattheritz, which performed below expectations, explained that the filly was under pressure after passing the 800m and failed to respond to his riding in the home straight. He added that, in his view, the filly was exhibiting signs that she was in season today and this may have affected her performance. A post race veterinary examination of Teaattheritz revealed a minor laceration to the off-fore pastern.
A post race veterinary examination of Tyrconnel revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the outside of the near-fore cannon.
