MY CALL: WALLER'S EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE
By David Fowler | Tuesday, June 12, 2018
David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.
Chris Waller's training performance during the Brisbane Racing Carnival was truly extraordinary.
I would argue no other visiting trainer has delivered such an impact in years gone by, thinking of the likes of Smith and Cummings as comparative examples.
It's worth repeating the winning war chest over the last five Saturdays.
He won and quinelled three Group Ones and three Group Twos and also won another three Group Twos.
Incredible.
I have little doubt such a whirlwind result has even further whetted Waller's appetite to launch even a stronger stake in south-east Queensland racing on a week by week basis.
The Gold Coast satellite stable that was launched last August has already netted 38 metropolitan winners.
Waller has the right man in Paul Shailer running the Gold Coast business and his securing of New Zealand jockey Michael McNabb to join the team is a powerful signal he means business in 2018-19.
The Gold Coast stable is not simply a refuge for out-of-form Sydneysiders.
Winter and Summer carnival aspirants will be given plenty of time to settle in and adjust to their northern routine.
Promising types will be given a whirl around at non-Carnival Saturday meets to see whether they measure up for a return to Sydney or Melbourne.
We've seen time and time again what Waller can achieve at the top end of town.
Now he is ready to go full bore at the bread and butter end.

The punters voted with their feet at Doomben last Saturday.
The attendance of almost 14,000 was only bettered by the Black Caviar turnout in 2011.
The best horses, trainers and jockeys in the land flocked to Doomben.
Once again, fact overruled vicious fiction.

Congratulations to Bart Sinclair on his Order of Australia medal award on Monday.
Apart from his 43 year contribution to the racing media, on all mediums, his involvement outside of the work loop has been second to none.
A strong love and respect for Queensland racing overrarched those 43 years.
And it's hard to believe he retired from his real job six years ago such is his continued powerful contribution to racing in the Sunshine State.

The Point of Consumption tax will be one of five new taxes delivered in tonight's Palaszczuk state government's budget.
But the racing industry's concerted effort to direct the POC revenue back to where it is derived from seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
That was the gloomy vibe at Stradbroke day from those who should know.
Longshots do get up on occasions, I suppose.

Ipswich will field a huge attendance at their Cup meet this Saturday.
What's new!
But worth mentioning Kilcoy also hosts their Cup meet with thoroughbred racing interspersed with harness racing and mini trotting for the kids.
Kilcoy always provides a great atmosphere and terrific food.
