KILCOY KASH - SATURDAY 16 JUNE 2018 – THE ANNUAL KILCOY CUP
Well we are back at KILCOY Race Club for their Kilcoy Cup Day. The Club has a great day out planned with seven thoroughbred races scheduled. Then the popular pacing on the course proper – with three races scheduled – PACING ON THE TURF! Not to forget the families and the children there will be three mini trot races with the kids and their ponies going around.
What a great program!
The track is rated “GOOD” and the rail will be in the true position.
WINNO will be trackside – I hope to see you there!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1
A small field of three-year old’s face the starter in the first race.
The Barry Baldwin trained Toujours L’Amour (6) has been racing consistently and her last start at Toowoomba ten days ago looks great form for this race. With some speed in the race she will probably just sit off them and make a run late with Emma Ljung in the saddle.
Mel Eggleston trains the top weight Masondale (1) who has run well fresh. There is no barrier trial form for this runner but Eggleston is a master at presenting his horses fresh and getting them ready for a first up killing – so be warned!
Brilee Rose (2) trained by Kelly Schweida likes to lead – so the Kilcoy track will suit this runner. Bridget Grylls makes the trip to Kilcoy to partner this Rothesay filly.
Selections: 6-2-1-5

Race 2
A maiden over 800 metres – these races are fast and furious. You need normally to have drawn nicely and be able to lead to get a win in these races – so I am looking for one drawn in close and a leader.
I have headed down to the bottom of the field here – I think the bottom three are the way to go!
Aquagem (12), trained at the Sunshine Coast by Alan Jones, ironically went around on a heavy track in her first career start. Despite her name she despised the wet track – forget the run and although drawn in a horrid barrier (11) I think Adam Sewell will be able to ease her behind some of the early speed and finish over the top of them!
Bridget Grylls partners the first starter Little Bit Little (11) out of the Tony Nutley stables – they tell me that this filly has been working well and she has drawn handy in barrier 4.
Licenced to Win (10) has come from NSW to the Lindsay Hatch stables in the Toowoomba. This filly has a history of leading and I think she will be suited here if she races in that fashion. Ruby Ride is aboard and will give her every chance as she rides them well in front.
Adam Spinks is aboard Lucky’s Lil Girl (3) who has raced here on several occasions and just has been pipped a few times. Maybe, with her experiences at Kilcoy, she may be able to crack her maiden win at start 22.
Selections: 12-11-10-3

Race 3
Beach Drum (9) has been racing in Group and Listed races over the Brisbane Winter Carnival. She drops back to a Class 3 race here – she could be the one to beat. Last start at the Gold Coast she faded over 1400 metres. I think the slightly longer distance may help her this weekend. She is trained by Matt Kropp and should be in the finish.
Red Mako (10) is trained in Toowoomba by Tony Sears and is to be ridden by Group winning jockey Skye Bogenhuber. Last start, 2 weeks ago at Gatton, she got too far back and chased solidly late but failed to rein in the winner. I think this weekend she will be ridden a little more forward by Skye who rides Kilcoy well and the extra distance will suit her!
Tempete Rouge (8) is from the strong Michael Costa stables on the Gold Coast. Last start she fought on well at Beaudesert under the urgings of Luke Dittman. She will appreciate the extra distance and will race up on the speed.
Selections: 10-9-8-1

Race 4
The Chris Anderson trained pair seem to have the race between them! They are Kastanos (7) to be ridden by Beau Appo, the defending Bruce Duncan Memorial Jockeys Challenge winner from 2017, and Scarlett Hussie (8) to be ridden by Vanessa Johnston.
These two runners met last start at Gatton where Scarlett Hussie (8) reigned supreme when ridden by Baylee Nothdurft.
I think that the stable mate may be able to turnaround the result this weekend at Kilcoy! I thought that at Gatton he set the race up for something to come home late and this was his downfall. He is only a lightly raced three-year-old and is fourth up this run and I think he will appreciate the 1900 metres more!
So over to you now Mr Beau Appo to get him home!
The top weight is Maxwell (1), trained by Brenton Andrew, who always has some luck here at Kilcoy. Hannah English is aboard, and her 1.5-kilogram claim will help the massive weight he has been given for the race. She rode this Smart Missile gelding to victory ten days ago at Dalby – a definite chance that must be considered.
Selections: 7-8-1-10

Race 5
Court Rules (6) is first up here and normally races on the speed. He has drawn the rails and should be prominent in the running. He normally races well fresh, so I am putting him on top. Rebecca Williams is in the saddle.
Barry Lockwood has Odelia (2) coming back to Kilcoy where she has a victory at the track. Another nice ride for Vanessa Johnston who rode this mare to victory at Gatton last start over 1100 metres. She goes up in grade but will be competitive.
Scrivano (8) comes off a win at Goondiwindi with Hannah English in the saddle – she retains the ride here and may need some luck drawn wide in barrier 10.
Honour Promise (9) is another runner who has won here previously. Drawn wide as well in barrier 13 she may try and cross them and maybe settle down in front. I am not sure what tactics Bridget Grylls may adopt for this race.
Porn Star Pete (5) – well I just have to say something – the horse’s name is very good! He won here in December and is third up from a spell. Jason Hoopert may think he is a “star” but is he good enough to get him home again here!
Selections: 6-2-8-9 rough chance 5

Race 6 Keith Beavis Memorial 2018 Kilcoy Cup
The feature race of the program – the Kilcoy Cup for 2018. It must be noted the wonderful continued support that Beavis family has provided to the Kilcoy Club. This is the 38th year this family has sponsored this race.
That must be close to an Australian record!
I saw this Rex Lipp runner debut and win at Doomben back in December 2017 – Love Ya Mars (5). He was impressive on debut and left a lasting impression on me. It is good to see he has come back from a spell and has won his last two starts. He fronts up to Kilcoy this weekend looking for a hat trick of wins – a nice ride for Rebecca Williams.
Reward For Fashion (7) from the Donald “Ducky” Baker stables has won at Doomben and has had a short let up of 5 weeks since her last start run at Ipswich. “Ducky” has put a tongue tie on for this run and Skye Bogenhuber has had success on this mare. She will be very competitive as well.
El Venetian (9) is an interesting runner debuting in Queensland for his first start after being sent from Sydney to Glenn Richardson’s stables. He has had 16 weeks between runs and has the addition of blinkers and a visor for this run. The gear changes may see an improved performance.
Charlie Cat (1) has a plethora of gear changes and a stable change and is now trained by Greg Cornish. This runner will be ridden by Adam Spinks and if Greg has got a handle on this runner and can get him to switch on he would destroy this field on his raw ability. He has always been a handful to train – but if he puts it all together on the day he could make a mess of this field.
Selections: 5-7-9-1 rough chances 2 and 13

Race 7
The last race of the day – hopefully we have got the bookies money by now!
I think the jockeys challenge will come down to this last race. There will be a few of them competing to claim the Bruce Duncan Memorial Jockeys Challenge trophy for 2018!
Rainbow Spirit (1) and Applause A Star (9) met here back in April and Rainbow Spirit won in the final 50 metres with a wonderful ride from Justin Stanley. This week we have apprentice Adam Spinks versus Skye Bogenhuber – it may come down to a race of tactics but there is a definite weight advantage to Applause A Star and that may be the deciding factor!
If it is Skye Bogenhuber may claim the Jockeys Challenge!
Overgrown (5) comes off a last start solid win at Beaudesert and maybe the knock out chance at odds in the last. Selections: 9-1-5-6

Jockey Challenge
It looks like a battle between the ladies – Skye Bogenhuber – Bridget Grylls and Rebecca Williams. It may even end up a tie! For the record I am going for Skye Bogenhuber in a closely fought contest!
