WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JUNE 23, 2018
By Darren Winningham | Friday, June 22, 2018
Doomben this week after a few weeks off. The weather men are saying some fine weather and some cold mornings for Friday and Saturday. Sounds like I will need a jacket!
This week we have the final Group 1 race for the Australian season – the time-honoured Tatt’s Tiara! The track is rated “GOOD” (Friday) and the rail will 3.5 metres out the entire course this weekend.
In WINNO news this week.
I must share a story!
Sunday on the Gold Coast – saw a great friend referee his first representative match. He did very well so proud of him and the way he performed. Well done Toby!
After the match WINNO heads home, sees some options for lunch. I remember the “best choices” lecture from my local GP at Banyo Clinic – no other than Dr Sh$tTips! (He is certain to be at the races this weekend in his multi coloured jacket as it is Tatts Day).
So, on the left is KFC – maybe 6 nuggets with just some chicken salt. On the right is a fresh fish shop. Okay, I will go for the healthy option (Sorry Trent Edmonds I know you own or sponsor most of the KFC franchises). I ask for a small piece or grilled fish – YUMBO! Drive home, do my washing, feel a bit of tummy pain. Lie down and then around 7pm – YUCK! Up all night you can imagine what is going on. Now I understand the term “thunder box”. Only at some stage to faint and wake up in a pool of blood. WINNO has cracked his head!
Wow – it isn’t even State of Origin week and I have a cut and a black eye on the way!
Well that was my “shit” weekend last week – let’s hope it is better back at the track this weekend.
Finally – it is State of Origin in Sydney. It would be remiss of me to remind you arrogant Queenslanders – it is the year of the NSW BLUES! Game 2 NSW 22 – QLD 16. You heard it here first!
It is a massive program, so I think it is time to hook into it!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
**************************************************************************************************
Race 1
The opening race is a small field for the 2-year old’s.
The NSW invader from the Tracey Bartley yards at Wyong Bare Naked Lady (2) was very impressive winning at Scone over the Scone Carnival. She is drawn nicely here and has had 6 weeks between runs – expect a bold performance here this weekend.
The Chris Waller trained Veranes (6) ran in some great races last preparation in Group and Listed company. She resumes here for the new stable looking to break her maiden win in this race. She has the tongue tie applied for the first time – maybe this will assist her this weekend.
Matthew Dunn has an exciting debutant here – Vernazza (11), owned by his wife Keira Dunn. This Written Tycoon filly won a recent trial at the Gold Coast impressively. She has drawn nicely for her debut in town. This makes me think the stable has an opinion on this one and Jim Byrne has been booked to ride her. I am worried State of Origin weekend with the Dunn stable maroon colours and Mr Queenslander himself in the saddle Jim Byrne. Is this a bad sign for the weekend?
Malahide (8) was first up at her home track and won after being heavily supported late by the stable. She was super in that run and dominated the field easily. I am not too certain that there was much depth to the opposition, however, winning form is always good form!
Selections: 2-6-11-8 rough chance 1.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 2
The Winning Edge Stakes at Listed level for the two-year old’s.
I think we will get this over and done with quickly – Granny Red Shoes (4) trained by Toby Edmonds is the way to go here. She comes off a win at the Sunshine Coast last start where I thought she was beaten on three occasions but just dug deep and won! That race was at Listed level as well. Blake Shinn takes the ride this weekend.
Take your pick for the placings however. The danger may be the Paul Nolan trained Spending My Time (2) who seemed unlucky at the start when he was knocked over and disadvantaged. This week given a clear crack at them maybe he can dramatically improve.
The Gollan Racing runner Light Up The Room (6) was impressive on debut at the Gold Coast and should be able to fill a hole.
Selections: 4-2-6-5.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 3
The 2018 Battle of the Bush Final – what a massive field. Trainers from all over the State are travelling here this weekend for the race! Some have brought their jockeys with them as well.
This is a tough race – anything could happen!
Olivia Cairns a trainer based in Mackay is not a stranger to the winning stall at Doomben. She has several runners that have qualified for this field, however, I really like the recent form of Mason’s Chance (3) who has drawn handy in barrier 2 and has a pretty good jockey aboard here – Justin Stanley. Let’s hope they are seen together after the race in the NUMBER 1 stall grabbing a photo with WINNO!
Man Around Town (6) is trained by Trevor Rowe in Cairns. He has brought regular rider Sonja Wiseman down to ride the Raheeb gelding who an impressive career record as well – 30 starts 10 wins and 6 placings. He has drawn wide here that is my only reservation – barrier 19 may see him pratted wide and must endure a hard run!
Klammer (2) is trained by Glenn Richardson at Nanango. I think he liked the chances of his charge until he drew barrier 16. This trainer is a master tactician and I am sure he and regular rider of this Snitzel gelding Hannah English will devise a plan from the wide barrier (barrier 16) to get the best possible chance of victory.
There you have it – 3 bush horses and 3 country riders to fill the trifecta!
Timetus (12) is trained by Craig Smith at Roma and in some of his country runs has been ridden by up and coming Les Ross apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson (you remember the one who tries to grow a moustache!).
This young determined and very talented apprentice suffered a set back on Thursday this week at the track when he was riding work and a horse fell on top of him. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a fractured pelvis and had a split artery resulting in some bleeding in his stomach. We all wish this young man a speedy recovery and with the support of his adoring parents, family and friends I am certain that with his desire and determination he will rehabilitate well and we will see him back bigger and better soon! Get well mate!
This runner will be ridden by Matthew McGillivray this weekend and has drawn well in barrier 9. I suppose for the sentimentalists it would be apt if he could win after the injury to Sheriden.
Selections: 3-6-2-12 rough chance 5. *************************************************************************************************
Race 4
When Rob Heathcote gets No Annamossity (4) firing he normally can string a few wins together. The last start victory here a fortnight ago was a solid win under a large weight with Boris Thornton in the saddle. The pair combine again here this weekend and, drawn nicely, should be hard to toss.
Toby Edmonds has The Amateur (2) in the race. Look, I can never catch him but I looked at his win at the Gold Coast on video and it seemed that he may have turned the corner. He is a little unreliable on some occasions.
Taillevent (5) fits into the same category. Not a large winner of races (4 wins in 35 starts) but he always seems to fill a placing and blow my exotic bets out of the water. This weekend with the stable apprentice Jag Guthmann-Chester in the saddle I would not be surprised if he can run a solid race here. JAG and Michael Murphy appear to be going head to head over the final weeks of the 2017-18 season to claim the Brisbane Metropolitan’s leading apprentice title – a win here could nearly seal it for JAG!
Manaya (7) has the services of Blake Shinn this week – coming off a solid win midweek at the Gold Coast nearly 4 weeks ago. He does like the 1350 metres at Doomben and should be competitive.
Two roughies if you want to scout wide are the horses both trained at Toowoomba. The first is the Ben Currie runner – Mr Markou part owned by Victory Thoroughbreds. Shane “Curly” Ciurleo will be trackside I am sure, and he will be vocal if this gelding salutes. Michael Murphy is in the saddle as well. Maybe it will be a battle of the two leading apprentices over the final few hundred metres?
The other runner is Our Beebee (14) trained by Rex Lipp. I am not sure whether she is a huge fan of the Sunshine Coast track – it may pay to forgive that last run and see what happens this weekend. She is drawn perfectly in barrier 1.
It is an open race with many chances. Bet carefully.
Selections: 4-2-5-7 rough chances 10 and 14.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 5
The Tony Pike stable from New Zealand is well represented here and is probably looking for a consolation prize or two after his horses were scratched earlier in the Carnival for treatment given to them on race morning. Since then both Sacred Rebel (8) and Bostonian (1) have won at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track. Both like a wet track – however, have performed on firm surfaces.
Trommelschlagen (3) is first up this weekend for the formidable new combination in Brisbane Racing of Rob Heathcote and Jake Bayliss. Will this dynamic duo continue into the next racing season? Only time will tell as Jake weighs up his options on where he will ride in the coming months after taking a short holiday.
This Drumbeats gelding won a trial on a heavy track a fortnight ago with Jake in the saddle. He has won first up previously, and he is drawn well in barrier 7.
Colosimo (12) just paddled in the Daybreak Lover at the Sunshine Coast when beaten behind Bostonian (1) last start. She was held up entering the straight and I think she will be better suited on a firm track where she has thrived previously.
Selections: 1-3-8-12.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 6 2018 Tatt’s Cup (Group 3)
A small field for this year’s running of the Tatt’s Cup. This could be a race where we see another roughie salute.
I am not all that impressed with the form of the favourite Tradesman (2). I think he may be tested here this weekend. His last two runs have been okay – but I am just not sold on it – I would not be lining up to take the $1.90. He won the Ipswich Cup last weekend. Okay he won but I think he needed to win a little more convincing and he has gone up dramatically in the weights this weekend.
I am going for an upset – Honey Toast (6) from the Currie stables with Bobby El-Issa in the saddle to knock them over at some solid odds, currently around $8 in some markets. This runner has a habit of coming off a 1600 metre start and stepping up to a longer distance and running well – so I hope we can get a big price winner to start off our Quaddie!
Stephen Lee has got Anton En Avant (4) going great guns now and he likes this Doomben track. If the track is wet or we get any rain his chances will be enhanced. Divine Unicorn (8) was third up last start and struck a heavy track. I am not confident that he is a fan of wet tracks. Back on top of the ground this weekend and with Jim Byrne in the saddle I think we will see a better run from this Matthew Dunn trained runner. I have always thought that a longer distance will suit this runner – maybe this weekend I will be proven right … or wrong!
Jumbo Prince (4), the Michael Nolan trained gelding with strapper Nick Hahn bringing him to the races, gets conditions to suit this weekend. He has run some solid runs over this course and distance – watch out punters it may be Jumbo saluting when the judge calls a halt to the race. I bet he will get a big cuddle and kiss from Nick if he is able to win a Group 3 race!
Selections: 6-8-2-3 rough chance 4
*************************************************************************************************
Race 7 G.H.Mumm Listed Race
Richard Laming brings his exciting mare Jamaican Rain (10) to Brisbane and Jamie Kah is aboard for the ride. This runner has won her past two starts. Those performances may have been highlighted by the wet tracks however, when I go back through her previous form – especially in the 2017 Spring in Victoria, she is one with some potential. I think we may see that here this week.
Ulmann (2) had a quick back up last start. I think he raced flat so forget that run. Nw he has had a fortnight off, I think you will see the real Ulmann (2) from the Darren Weir stables turn up here.
“Hoffy” – or Hopfgarten (1) - is one of those horses that when he finds winning form he may go on with it. There are some silly odds of $14 on offer in some markets about this runner. He is a last start Listed winner. I think he should be a lot shorter.
Chris Waller has a last start Randwick winner Noire (7) looking to win a black type race. She is entered in the Tatt’s Tiara but will need a miracle to get a run in that so this maybe Option B for the Waller camp. She did descend on them quickly in her last win and forged to the line strongly – she will appreciate the mile here.
Sheiswhatsheis (6) raced erratically last start according to jockey Jeff Lloyd and he could not restrain her and this eventually told when she tailed off in that race. If you forgive that run her form at this track is exemplary so maybe you could forgive that run – or can you?
Peter Snowden has Grande Rosso (3) in the race. He has taken the blinkers off for the first time – maybe this may assist but his record third up is disgraceful with no results from five starts.
Selections: 10-2-7-6 rough chances 1 & 3.

Race 8 2018 Tatt’s Tiara (Group 1)
Massive field of 16 to go around here – 21 listed including 5 emergencies! Seems like everyone wants to win the final Group 1 race of the 2018 season in Australia.
Look I watched the Dane Ripper (Group 2) that is the traditional lead up race to this race each year. I could not have been more impressed with the run of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott runner Prompt Response (4) who drew wide, was forced to race three wide without cover and still managed to be in the photo finish with the eventual winner of that race Invincibella (1). Blake Shinn stays aboard. She has drawn barrier 4. I am so confident that she can reverse that result this weekend.
The Jason Coyle trained Siren’s Fury (14) was drawn wide in the same race as Prompt Response (4) last start. Tegan Harrison who is aboard this weekend was forced to go back and ride her for luck. She seemed to miss the start slightly and then got in a position at the rear of the field before Tegan made a long-sustained run surging and flying home late to be beaten only a length. This week from barrier 2 do not be surprised that Tegan races her handy near the lead or just off the speed. She races best ridden this way (my opinion) and I think that at massive odds of $25 she could cause a boil over!
This will be Jason Coyle’s first Group 1 winner since 2009 if she can win since he trained Onemorenomore and Linky Dink for the Patinack team. Winno has done his research this week!
Champagne Cuddles (15) was a nice run in the Stradbroke. Back to her own sex – although giving some of her rivals some age - I think that she will be competitive again in this race. She has drawn well in barrier 4. Corey Brown should be able to give her the run of the race and every possible chance from there!
Super Cash (5) was a massive run in the Stradbroke! I don’t think she would have beaten the winner, but Jamie Kah did lose her whip around the 100-metre mark. This mare comes out of some solid Group 1 races. I think that she was a serious contender if she had not drawn the car park in barrier 17.
Now for the others that could feature.
Missrock (7) comes through the South Australian form of the Group 1 Goodwood. This Robbie Laing runner also has drawn woefully in barrier 18 – she will need some luck as well – but Michael Cahill is a master magician from wide barriers at Doomben.
Savanna Amour (10) is a runner that can do anything when she turns up. Her first up run after a spell, when sitting off the speed and outsprinting her rivals with Ben Melham in the saddle was amazing. She goes well second up and has drawn the rails. She is up in class – her first Group 1 race but she will be competitive!
Pedrena (12) with Michael Dee in the saddle had no luck last start. She was caught three wide and I think hated she heavy track – despite these factors she still fought on well and was only beaten five lengths. She may be worth another chance.
Moss Trip (16) with Brenton Avdulla has drawn barrier 21. He will need a genius of a ride to win. But do not underestimate this Peter & Paul Snowden trained runner. If anyone can do it – this team can!
Selections: 4-14-15-5 rough chances 7,10,12 & 16.
**************************************************************************************************
Race 9
The Mark Newnham trained Gibraltor’s Girl (16) was solid first up behind Savanna Amour (see Tatts Tiara) when she was held up at a vital stage at the 300 metres mark. I think that loss of momentum and then having to be steadied and regain her feet cost her a chance of running a meritorious place in the race. She has won twice from five starts second up and looks well placed here from barrier 4 – another nice ride for Corey Brown to finish the day off with. This could be a big result for bookies at around $21.
Spright (5) is an interesting runner who was unlucky as well last start in the Dane Ripper (Group 2) when she jumped awkwardly then seemed to get caught wide and then got obstructed entering the straight. The other major factor that brings me to this $31 chance is she is a duffer in the wet and she did all of that on a heavy surface – so on a good track I expect a dramatic improvement this weekend!
The topweight – my old mate Calanda (1) (Grafton Ramornie 2017 winner) is second up here and has not been treated well in the barrier draw being allocated barrier 16 – I am also just concerned with his second up record with only one placing from three attempts. The barrier, the weight and second up just takes me away from him this weekend.
Did I mention Day 1 of the Grafton Carnival is only 2 weeks away – Thursday 5th July – black and yellow dress day for the traditional Westlawn Prelude Day!
The Desleigh Forster trained Malvern Estate (11) resumes here. He won a recent barrier trial and is undefeated in two starts when resuming and is around the $10 mark. He could be some value for the trifecta!
I did mention Stella Ombre (12) last time. I told you all to watch out third up as he always goes great third up. Guess what he is third up – Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, drawn well barrier 5 and there was a myriad of excuses last start. Watch out for this Kelly Schweida trained runner at $21. This could be one massive trifecta and first 4 people!
O’Rachael (15) from the Edmonds stables on the Gold Coast was checked at the start in the Dane Ripper (Group 2) last start and you could say was knocked out of the race. Forget that run as well – she also did not handle the track and will be better suited this weekend. We also have long priced winning jockey Ronnie Stewart in the saddle - $26 here. These are the odds where Ronnie sneaks them home from time to time. For mine box my 6 horses in the trifecta and the first 4 – we could be in the money!
Selections: 16-5-1-11 rough chances 12 & 15.

Jockey Challenge
Looks like it is going to be a battle of the NSW based jockeys – Blake Shinn and Corey Brown. We could see the result determined in the last race. I think Blake Shinn could get the better of it this weekend. If you want a real roughie Michael Cahill has some nice chances as well.
Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW only)
2,4 / 2,3,6 / 2,4,5 / 1,3,8,12 - cost is $72 to $1
Quaddie (races 6 to 9) 2,6,8 / 2,7,10 / 4,5,14,15 / 1,5,11,12,16 - cost is $180 to $1
Value Quaddie (races 6 to 9) 6,8 / 7,10 / 4,14 / 5,11,16 - cost is $24 to $1
Mad Quaddie (races 6 to 9)
6,8 / 2,10 / 4,15 / 5,12,16 - cost is $24 to $1
Treble (races 7 to 9) 2,7,10 / 4,5,14,15 / 1,5,11,12,16 - cost is $60 to $1
Value Treble (races 7 to 9) 7,10 / 4,14 / 5,11,16 - cost is $12 to $1
*FLEMO and WINNO were in average form in our tipping competition – we picked a few placings and overall it was a tough day at Ipswich. A day we both would rather forget to be honest. This weekend we will have our tips up on Facebook on Saturday morning – so be sure to check them out.
Good luck and good punting!
