BUBBA TILLEY'S BIG DAY OUT
By Darren Winningham | Saturday, July 28, 2018
It’s finally happened.
Les “Bubba” Tilley has been riding for six years and has struggled to break through for his first Saturday metropolitan winner, but today was his day.
Tilley had partnered the very smart Spurcraft to a flash win on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago in a 900-metre sprint and the duo took the next step up in their stride by winning at Doomben in a Class 6 Handicap over 1100m to give Tilley that elusive winner.
“Bubba” said he was busy sweating in the spa and sauna on Saturday morning to make weight for his rides at Doomben and now it was all worth it.
After his run of outs at Saturday meetings Tilley said, “it was great to get the monkey off the back – I have been beaten five times by a nose on Saturday … and Jeff Lloyd has beaten me on three of those occasions– but today he finished behind me.”
Charlotte White, who trains the Jet Spur gelding, who is now a six-time winner from only nine starts, said that he will have one more run in Brisbane before mapping out a program for her speedster in Sydney.
