SCST SEPT 20 - GLACIAL MIST GLIDES IN

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Sunshine Coast, September 20, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 2m.
3yo QTIS Maiden Plate (Set Weights) - 1200m. Time: 1-12.80.
1 Glacial Miss; 2 Lunar Rose; 3 Toptwo.

The Liam Birchley trained Glacial Mist benefitted from an ice-cool ride by jockey Michael Cahill to sweep up on the rail in the straight to score with something in hand.

Cahill took the filly back to third last in the early part and he was quite content to let the likes of Rose’N’Cyn and Lunar Rose do the hard yards up front. Lunar Rose made an early play for glory in the straight and she hit the lead in menacing fashion, but Glacial Mist, who had stayed hard on the rail, quickened up nicely from behind and it was soon apparent that she was building winning momentum.

Lunar Rose never stopped trying and she was clearly superior to the rest of the chasing pack, but her effort was not good enough to ward off the fast finishing Glacial Mist who breezed through along the inside to score her first career win in only her second start.

This form could be worth following as Unica Bahaya, who beat Glacial Mist by 1.50 lengths in the latter’s debut outing, made it two out of two when she won her subsequent start at Ipswich.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Michael Cahill: “Things fell in place for her. They asked me to ride her quietly. Apparently she’s a bit of a hot-headed filly and they have spent a bit of time on her at the stable. The good work-rider Alan Russell’s put a lot of time in getting her to settle. So, yeah, I rode her back and fortunately the runs came her way.

“It was quite a good win. As soon as I asked her to go she just gave me a good feeling. She really let down well and I thought then I had them. I didn’t hit her with the whip. It was a good effort for a young filly. But, once again, she’s got to improve. If she can, she might measure up to Saturday class.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Glacial Mist): 1.60 out to 1.90.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Glacial Miss (M. Cahill) was slow to begin. Glacial Miss and Toptwo (D. Browne) over-raced in the early and middle stages. Rose'N'Cyn (K. Pope) was inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 300m and as a result Glacial Miss obtained a run to his inside.

G. Baker was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on Lunar Life. Of particular concern was the reason for him failing to attempt to take a run between Hayley's Mist (J. Byrne) and Toptwo (D. Browne) approaching the 300m. G. Baker explained that shortly after straightening he rode Lunar Life hands and heels, however the filly was not travelling well enough to improve into the run that presented itself near the 300m, and added that Lunar Life was inclined to race greenly in the home straight. Stewards noted the explanation of G. Baker.
