WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, SEPT 1, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 30, 2018

The Sunshine Coast track is currently rated as “GOOD” with the weather predicted to be warm for the coming days.

The rail is out 6 metres the entire track. Last weekend it seemed to favour the front runners.I think that we may see a little different pattern of racing this weekend. With that in mind I would suggest that you all take the time to review how the track is playing across the meeting before investing in the later races.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

A small field to start the day.

The Plumb family are looking for another victory with Sugar Sizzle (1) – trained by Angela Plumb and to be ridden by brother Ryan Plumb. The Aquis Farm filly is looking for a hat trick of wins. Let’s hope Ryan can navigate his way to the Sunshine Coast this Saturday – he normally rides on the Gold Coast.

I am gambling on the Tony Gollan trained A Man To Match (2) to return to the winners stall. I thought he peaked on his run first up on the Gold Coast over 1400 metres when soundly defeated by Sugar Sizzle (1). Look for an improved effort second up here on this large track where he has won.

The locally trained Red Doulton (5) finished second in the same race as the two runners already mentioned. Trained here by Natalie McCall she may be just ready to show something.

Fish ‘N’ Snitz (4) resumed here 2 weeks ago over 1000 metres. She has some solid form. She is trained here by Stuart Kendrick and may just sneak a place.

The Brian Smith trained Belle Roc (6) has been sensationally backed in the early markets firming from $10 to $4.40. She won her maiden here a fortnight ago without being tested. The time was nothing to write home about but maybe she has some improvement left in her and will take the next step in Saturday grade this weekend.

Selections: 2-5-6-1 rough chance 4

Race 2

Another small field of just seven runners and each of them have a genuine chance.

Brian Smith trains Order Again (1) who resumed with a dominating win at Doomben over 1350 metres. The mile will suit him second up and he looks well placed here. A slight gear change with a tongue tie going on this weekend.

Glitra (4) just keeps winning for the Peter & Will Hulbert team. Since the change of stables this gelding has been going very well. I think that if the leaders are winning on Saturday he is the one to beat. In saying that if there is a crazy tempo set by another runner watch out for Order Again (1) to storm home out wide late.

Steve Tregea has Prioritise (5) and Bergerac (2) engaged. They both have been running well of late. Prioritise (5) won here last weekend over the mile and probably is the best of his runners.

Selections: 4-1-5-2

Race 3

Kris Lees has Tactical Advantage (3) making the trek north to Queensland. Jeff Lloyd is in the saddle that will do me here. His last run at Rosehill was good under a massive 61 kilograms. Look to see him win this race this weekend.

Misery (1) is trained locally and will probably lead this field. For that reason he must be given a chance. Jackson Murphy’s claim will assist this runner as well.

Girl In A Million (11) was unlucky last start at the Gold Coast over 900 metres. Put a pen through that run. Back up to 1000 metres, with Taylor Marshall in the saddle and drawn handy, I expect a much better performance this weekend.

Selections: 3-1-11-4

Race 4

The debutant for Steven O’Dea, right down the bottom here, won a recent trial at Doomben in pretty good fashion. That’s Lady Clare (12). I saw $13 early on Wednesday on NSW TAB and jumped in. Now Thursday when I am reviewing my tips I see she has been smashed into $5.50. Maybe they expect a good performance in her first run? She has drawn well in barrier 3 – and again has Jackson Murphy aboard. She will carry only 52.5 kilograms – this could be the deciding factor!

Snicki Minaj (1) from the Tony Gollan stables resumes here and was only just average in a recent trial at Doomben. She may need the run.

Chris Munce trains Racecourse Road (3) who steps out a little lighter this preparation (well he has been gelded). He won a trial on the 21 August and looked like he was set for a nice campaign. He did run in some Group races over the Winter Carnival and I think he could challenge here.

Gypsy Toff (6), trained by Tom Button, resumed with a nice win at Rockhampton three weeks ago. Look for her to be competitive this weekend with Dale Smith in the pig skin.

Selections: 12-3-6-1 rough chance 5

Race 5

Looks Like Elvis (5) keeps working through his grades very impressively and is getting up in the weights. That is my only concern. Despite the claim for Jag Guthmann-Chester he will face his toughest test this weekend. However, if they are coming late and able to make up ground, he is the perfect runner for this Sunshine Coast track.

Courtza King (1) will probably not need to lead this weekend as there are a few other speedsters engaged in the field. He won with some authority last start at Doomben when leading all the way with a masterful ride from Brad Stewart. If they are leading and winning he is probably the one to load up on!

Backslapper (8) I think will be better suited over the 1400 metres. He is four runs into this preparation. I think we may see him ridden off the lead by apprentice Michael Murphy who returns to riding after a recent holiday up in the north of the State. Now he is down in the weights – he may just pop up at some silly odds in this race.

Selections: 5-1-8-10

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie and it is a lottery race for stayers! Leave me out!

The Kevin Kemp trained Fighting Teo (7) is only lightly raced and jumped back into the winners’ stalls at the Gold Coast two weekends ago. He goes slightly up in the weights but the win at the Gold Coast was impressive. He has a win at this track and normally doesn’t get too far back in his races so he may be the perfect runner depending on how the track is playing.

The runner that may be the one to knock them out is Idle Situation (4) who seems to always to show up at some stage after a break in his runs. Despite being a nine-year-old he does like firm footing and normally will acquit himself well in this grade.

Sir Barnabus (10) is trained by Jason Edwards. He is only a young up and coming stayer in my opinion. He got a little too far back at the Gold Coast last start but gathered momentum and was working home well. I would not be surprised if he improves on this big track.

Meteorologist (8), from the Marcus Wilson stables on the Gold Coast, was solid when defeated last start at the Gold Coast by Fighting Teo (7) – he may show up here again.

Selections: 7-10-4-8

***************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The Open Sprint. This is an even bunch with most of them having posted good performances and wins in the last start.

Desleigh Forster trains Malvern Estate (6) who has a wonderful record here at the track with five wins and one second from 6 starts. I thought the run at Doomben when beaten by Fiery Heights (5) last start was great. I think down in the weights and ridden close to the speed we may see Des jumping around after the race!

Tversky (10) was well backed last weekend here when the track favoured leaders and he could dominate the race from barrier to post. He goes up in grade, however, I think that he will be suited with the track conditions this weekend and may run them into the ground again.

Dal Cielo (1) was an easy winner last start at the Gold Coast. Jeff Lloyd aboard this weekend for the Kris Lees stables at Newcastle. He will be stiff opposition.

I am going to give Niccanova (3) one more chance! He loves this track and I think that with the genuine speed in this race he may be the smokey here. Jimmy Orman keeps his good association with this gelding going. He could just pop up at nice odds here.

Selections: 6-10-1-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Tough race this – not one I would be betting on with any confidence.

I have gone for the Brian Wakefield mare Jardin Rouge (10) who has been working through her grades quite well and looks like she is a promising type. She is looking to win in Saturday grade for the first time. She does race handy close to the speed and has drawn well in barrier 3.

Crab Boy (8) – well there are a few jokes I could make here – but I will leave them alone! This gelding won a race at Ipswich last time out and led all the way. He has won here at the track. My attention is drawn to him and Andrew Spinks is in the saddle. He must have an opinion of this one to give away a few rides at the Gold Coast to chase this runner to the Sunshine Coast.

Rhyming (6) turned in a bad performance last start at Doomben. I am forgiving her that run. She has had a month off now and maybe she can race well fresh in this grade.

Selections: 10-8-6-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

Saxton Rock (3) has pretty good form and resumed for Matthew Dunn and his stable apprentice Clayton Gallagher a fortnight ago at the Gold Coast in a pretty dominant winning performance. On that run, despite going up in grade, I think he is well placed here and he has won previously second up. I think this one will be a nice type and win some good quality races next Winter Carnival in Brisbane.

Reckless Choice (8) has been supported in the early markets. He has had a three-week break between runs and Steven O’Dea gave him a nice hit out in a trial on 21 August where he really wasn’t slapped about. He is stepping up from Class 1 to Class 3 but I think he should be able to make the transition.

The other O’Dea runner is Idalia’s Dream (17) who has never been out of a place at this track in six starts. I think he may prefer a wet surface but he may be a rough hope.

Cedarwood (5) was a good second at Doomben last start behind Glitra (race 2 – number 4). I think that he is back to the right grade and company this weekend and will be thereabouts when the judge calls a halt to the race.

Selections: 3-5-8-17
