WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 6, 2018
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, October 4, 2018
The track is rated “SOFT” (Thursday afternoon) and the rail will be 6 metres out the entire course this weekend.
There is a big chance of rain and wet weather from Thursday through to Saturday so there may be a downgrade in the track. If that happens expect lots of scratchings as the meeting approaches.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
Small field with some form all over the place.
I am staying with the recent Lismore Cup winner Fairlighting (3) from the Toby Edmonds stable. It was Toby’s birthday on Thursday and what better way to celebrate with the first winner on the program!
This mare reeled in the tearaway leader Future Event (2), trained by John Zielke, in the Lismore Cup. I think the extra distance should not be a problem and she may be good enough to put a hat trick of wins on the board.
Impavido (1) won here on debut in Queensland for the Bjorn Baker stable. The gelding has performed well on previous wet tracks and despite the massive weight I think he will still be competitive with Jeff Lloyd aboard again.
Rob Heathcote, who comes off a winning treble here last weekend, has a nice runner here by way of Monaco Snob (6) who is looking to win his fourth consecutive start. Michael Hellyer has ridden him in all three wins and is looking for another win this weekend.
The best wet weather runner is Future Event (2) trained by John Zielke – if the track is heavy and the rain sets in he is probably the runner to be on!
Selections: 3-6-1-2

Race 2
The two-year old’s make their debut in Brisbane metro this week – and here it is – well the male edition!
Rob Heathcote’s runner Guntantes (1) looks a ready-made runner after a solid trial win at Doomben. Dale Smith who keeps on riding winners since his move to Brisbane rode this Rothesay colt in the trial and stays on board for his racing debut. He is drawn handy and should be the one to beat.
Ready To Party (5) is trained by Matthew Dunn at Murwillumbah and he has had a couple of trials. He won his last trial in good fashion at Doomben. Ryan Maloney is on top. He must be respected.
Jimmy Orman rides a debutant for the Kelly Schweida stables here – The Odyssey (8). His run was solid when beaten by Ready To Party (5) in the recent trial. This runner could be the one that knocks them out at a massive price of $15.
In the end if the track deteriorates it could be a real lottery as none of them have exposed wet track form.
Selections: 1-5-8-7

Race 3
This is the female edition of the two-year old runners.
Courseshewill (1) won the first two-year-old race of the 2018/19 season on debut on Toowoomba for the Liam Birchley yards. Matthew McGillivray rode her and she looks well placed here again.
It looks like the two Tony Gollan runners are going to be difficult to beat as well – Country Cocktail (6) and Niedorp (10). The barrier trials have swung me to put Country Cocktail (6) on top with Brad Stewart on board.
Stewart turned in a sensational performance last weekend with a winning treble and was narrowly beaten by an eye lip in another race and was unlucky to not claim four wins on the program!
Both fillies have won their barrier trials and both have drawn badly. Country Cocktail (6) has drawn barrier 11, Niedorp (10) has drawn barrier 12. These barriers could bring them both unstuck if they get away slowly and get caught wide.
Buckets of Pride (3) from the Chris Munce team has drawn barrier 1 and Ryan Wiggins is aboard. Despite her trial time being slow, the barrier may assist with her chances.
Again, if the track is wet and ugly – maybe see what they back before unloading on anything.
Selections: 6-10-1-3 rough chances 9

Race 4
This race is a pretty even bunch but I don’t think you can go past the Matthew Dunn trained Bullet Shot (6) at around $8. This runner resumed with a nice win at Ipswich a fortnight ago. He won a trial on a soft track at the Gold Coast, so I think he will not be bothered by a wet surface. Jim Byrne rode him at Ipswich and retains the ride this week.
Lulu Express (9) is a Edmonds Racing runner who comes off a last start win at Doomben. She has won two from two on a soft track and was beaten narrowly on a heavy track – so she will be competitive if the track is wet. Her last start win at Doomben in a midweek meeting was good after racing handy on the speed. She looks the testing material.
Sky Lake (10) resumed at the Gold Coast two weekends ago for Chris Munce and won well. I think after looking at the tape of that run she could take the step up to metro Saturday and post a win in a tough field.
Selections: 6-9-10-1

Race 5
An Open race that has only drawn seven runners.
With the rail out so far, this weekend it could prove beneficial to leaders.
Last weekend Fiery Heights (2) led all the way and ran them into the ground with a superb ride by Brad Stewart. I hope that the 1350 metres of the race will not be the undoing of this runner. Niccanova (3) loves wet tracks and is a duck! He will be right in this if the rain comes and the track deteriorates. Apprentice Michael Murphy is aboard the Steve Tregea gelding. This team won the last race at Doomben last weekend.
Dream Finish (5) rounds out my top three. This Michael Nolan runner mare likes both this distance and wet tracks.
Selections: 2-3-5-7

Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie.
This is not a race that one can get enthralled about to be honest.
Just Orm (8) from Gollan Racing has been going okay. He won his last start midweek here with a large weight. He goes up in class and down in weight and should be ridden close to the speed.
I expect that Misery (6) will lead the race here and Jim Byrne will sit in behind him before exposing Just Orm late to make one burst at them. When he is ridden this way he normally produces a good performance. The only problem is that he does not have any exposed wet weather form.
Misery (6), who likes wet tracks, is trained by Stuart Kendrick. If the track is downgraded and they are leading and winning, come this race I am certain this is the runner you want to be on.
Overall a poor race – anything could happen.
Selections: 8-6-1-7

Race 7
The first leg of the Treble. Another small field.
Pizonie (7) was first up at the Sunshine Coast when defeated by Defence Missile (1). On that occasion he looked like he may have needed the run. I think second up this weekend he will turn the tables on the Les Ross trained Defence Missile.
I think the race is really between these two runners.
Keirabella (9) won first up at Lismore for Matthew Dunn. This filly has been unlucky each preparation. Now she has been first past the post – she may just be able to do it again!
Selections: 7-1-9-4
**************************************************************************************************
Race 8
Devine Dice (3) turned in an impressive win last start at Sunshine Coast with Tegan Harrison aboard. I think that he may just go on with it here.
Diamonds Are (7) has a super run first up over 1110 metres. I think the extra distance may suit the Michael Costa runner this weekend.
Lindsay Gough trains Oradonnna (9) who flashed home a fortnight ago when beaten by Goldfinch over 1050 metres. If that race had been 1200 metres I think the result may have been different. She does like wet tracks and Michael Murphy has been booked for the ride, so his claim will assist here.
The Tony Gollan pair of Prue’s Angel (8) and Happy Hooves (13) could create an upset here if they get the right race tempo and track conditions.
Selections: 3-9-7-8 rough chance 13

Race 9
The last race of the day over a mile. Will we even see the running of the last race if the weather turns nasty?
I think that Jackson Murphy’s claim may hold the secret to this race with his engagement to ride the Michael Costa trained Gold Ambition (5). This runner is better suited at Doomben – forget the recent run at the Sunshine Coast and look for a big improvement.
Hang (7) is second up here. He raced in some nice races last preparation and could be some value second up with Jim Byrne in the saddle for Toowoomba trainer Michael Nolan.
Zofonic Dancer (6) is another Heathcote runner who got back in the winner’s circle last start at the Sunshine Coast. I have always thought that he is a nice type and could maybe post another win here.
Toby Edmonds' last start winner Madam Shazam (12) came from back in the field to storm home and win over the mile. She likes wet tracks and is down in the weights. She may be competitive here as long as the track does not have a leader’s bias come the last race.
Selections: 5-7-6-12 rough chances 1 & 4
