THE TONY HAYDON RACING SEASON (AUG 1 - AUG 30)

By HRO | Friday, August 31, 2018

THE TONY HAYDON RACING SEASON - AUGUST 2018

OVERVIEW:

The Tony Haydon racing stable enjoyed a very impressive 40% strike rate in the first month of the 2018-19 racing season landing two individual winners (Seductive Dream and Rippin ‘n’ Tearin) from only five starters.

Seductive Dream had previously won first up on May 20 after a seven-month layoff. That win came over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast … a combination of track and distance that would become a notable form factor for the mare moving forward.

Two lack-lustre runs followed that May 20 win. They were over 1350m and 1400m in soft going and it was the return to 1200m that prompted her next success … the one that kick-started the stable’s season … when she took out a Class 3 event on August 5, winning by a length from the 9-10 favourite Our Jamaica who would come out and win at Ipswich next start to frank the merit in Seductive Dream’s performance.

For his part, Rippin ‘n’ Tearin’s win came into his August 19, Class 2 assignment at the Sunshine Coast off the back of a promising runner-up finish behind Pinch Passion over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast on August 12.

The five-year-old gelding was confidently backed up a week after that second placing over the same track and distance and trainer Tony Haydon’s judgement proved spot on as Rippin ‘n’ Tearing, who was well supported in the betting, starting at $2.60, proved too strong for his rivals winning by a very comfortable 2.75 length margin.

HOW THE RACE WAS WON:

Aug 5: SEDUCTIVE DREAM:

In a pressurised beginning to the contest four horses were keen to lead after the jump. Seductive Dream ($4.40) won that initial battle but she was hounded all the way to the home turn by $61 outsider Heroic Rock.

Jockey Michael Cahill was unfazed by Heroic Rock’s presence though and he kept Seductive Dream racing at a comfortable gallop. As Heroic Rock predictably began to falter in the first half of the home straight, the real danger emerged in the shape of the 9-10 favourite Our Jamaica who make up ground very quickly between the 300m and 200 mark.

Cahill had kept something in reserve though and Seductive Dream kicked when asked to knuckle down to the task and it quickly became apparent that Our Jamaica’s effort was only going to be worth second place as Seduction Dream never faltered as she held her advantage to the line in impressive fashion.

Aug 19: RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARING

Rippin ‘n’ Tearing ($2.60) landed in second spot but Ryan Maloney was happy to go back to fourth place and take a trail sitting one off the rail and a little under three lengths off the lead.

Rippin ‘n’ Tearing held that position until Maloney asked his mount to quicken early the sweep to the home turn (at the 700m).

That move took Rippin 'n' Tearing into a perfect position to pounce on straightening … three wide, in clear air and only a length back … and pounce he did!

Not that Maloney was in any great rush.

He clearly knew what he had under him and he was content to push Rippin ‘n’ Tearing out hands and heels for the entire length of the straight, generously at first and then with a bit more vigour and, in the end, that all translated into a clear-cut 2.80 length victory.
