WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 24
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 22, 2018
Doomben this week.
The track is rated “SOFT” (Thursday afternoon) and the rail will be 6.5 metres out the entire course this weekend. There is a likely chance of rain and wet weather on Friday – however, they are saying it will be a scorcher this weekend with a forecast of 35 degrees or more on Saturday and Sunday.
The Summer Carnival is literally warming up!
The Tony Gollan stables are firing now with a massive weekend last weekend. Will it continue this week as well?
Sad news around the track with the rising sprinter Tversky passing away during the week. I had this horse ear marked to win the 2019 Grafton Ramornie. It is sad for the owners and trainer Gary Duncan. Jockey Dale Smith had built up a remarkable partnership Tversky claiming four wins in a row before being sent south to run down the straight at Flemington. Anyway, it is time – nine races – a quick review – and let’s see what we can come up with!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
**************************************************************************************************
Race 1 Massive field for the two-year-old runners to start the day!
Maybe it is a chance for the Gollan Racing stable to keep their winning form going with Vincere Volare (11) making her debut from barrier 7 for the Aquis Farm team syndicate. She won a recent trial at Doomben and looks very progressive and should be hard to beat with Jim Byrne in the saddle.
I like the run of Stage Play (12) in her debut at the Sunshine Coast when beaten by 4 lengths over 1000 metres. I think the extra distance here should see her be in the finish as well.
The topweight is a Central Queensland visitor who had performed well at the trials for trainer Graeme Green before winning on debut at Rockhampton. I watched the video of that run and it looked impressive, running close to the lead before storming away to bury the opposition by 6.75 lengths in a soft win.
“Bubba” Tilley remains in the saddle and he will be looking for 2 out of 2 wins on this gelding. He has drawn awkwardly in barrier 13 so they may have to adopt some different tactics this weekend.
Selections: 11-1-12-7
***************************************************************************************************
Race 2
One tough race punters!
Maybe time to head to the bar and grab a drink and keep the wallet in the pocket!
Ponytales (6) from team Gollan has won his last two starts and is looking for a hat trick of wins and to give Tony Gollan the first two winners on the program!
As for the rest of them the likely danger is Sofie’s Gold Class (10) from the Debbie Newham stables who won over a mile before stepping up to 2000 metres last start. I think that the distance was the problem last run and dropping back to the mile with Matthew McGillivray (recently married) aboard could see a change of luck for this lightly raced mare as she does look like she has some ability.
Selections: 6-10-3-1
***************************************************************************************************
Race 3
Another tough three-year-old race over the mile. Some of these runners have been attempting to win a race for while so anything could occur.
Toby Edmonds has Rumberella (9) in the race who seems to have been racing consistently without much luck. I think that the Doomben track and the rail out should help this gelding salute the judge first this weekend.
The danger again is another Gollan Racing runner - A Man To Watch (1) - who I have tipped his last few starts yet, despite some great rides from Brad Stewart, he has just not been able to crack a win this preparation. Dale Smith takes over this weekend and maybe the change in jockey may see a change of fortune for this colt. Trusty Lad (3) has been well backed in the early markets firming from $9 to $3.50 for the Matt Kropp stables. This runner was sent out at $101 last start and stormed home over 1350 metres first up after a short let up to finish a solid third. This weekend Jimmy Orman stays in the saddle and, stepping up to the mile (where he has won before with Orman in the saddle), he rates as a serious contender.
Selections: 9-1-3-8 rough chance 10
***************************************************************************************************
Race 4
This is an open sprint race.
With the rail out so far it may favour leaders. Tarzan (1) will be in the lead in this race for a long way – although he is drawn wide this weekend and will need to be used up by Jag Guthmann-Chester from barrier 13. He recently won a barrier trial at his home track on the Sunshine Coast with Luke Tarrant in the saddle so he is primed for a nice first up performance.
However, there are some other speedsters in this race that will be thundering forward as well – horses such at the visitor Goldfinch (9) trained in Sydney by Steve Englebrecht and to be ridden Deanne Panya who rode this mare first up here back in September to a good win. Gracida (3) trained by David Vandyke will race forward as well – as will Top Tone (6).
So, then you look for something that will settle in behind them and storm home late.
I have come up with Just Orm (7) who gets in very nicely with the claim for apprentice Corey Bayliss carrying only 52.5 kilograms. Not a bad price either at around $4.
The other runner that has my attention is Big Tree (8) trained by Nicole Tanti and Peter Balzen on the Gold Coast. This runner can also race handy or on the speed and resumed back in August over 1200 metres – which I think is not his go. I think the shorter distance will suit him nicely. He has drawn well in barrier 1 and has had the addition of blinkers for this run. Watch out for a big performance from this runner at around $14.
Selections: 8-7-3-9 rough chance 1
***************************************************************************************************
Race 5
A massive field to face the starter over 2040 metres.
I thought that the Bevan Laming runner, So You Wish (4) was solid last start with a nice win here over this distance and could just back up and beat the opposition again this week.
Korodon (12) was in the same race last start and does meet So You Wish (4) better at the weights for the defeat. Larry Cassidy and Chris Waller has been racking up some winners in recent months – maybe it is the secret super hero desire within him (see the photo). His magic powers may be able to get this runner home this weekend.
The other runners are an even bunch and to be honest any of them could pop up.
It is just one of these races where anything happen.
Selections: 12-4-9-6 rough chance 17
**************************************************************************************************
Race 6
A tough way to start the Quaddie.
Jenny Graham from Port Macquarie has Awesome Pluck (7) backing up from the Kosciusko at Randwick 7 weeks ago and a recent run at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. Damien Browne has been booked to ride the gelding for the first time. I am not to sure that $1.80 is a fair price to be taken but he does have the form on the board.
I like the Tony Edmonds runner Cadogan (2) who I got at $16 when markets opened on Wednesday. He is now into $4.60 in some markets – so I feel blessed! Jackson Murphy has been booked by the Edmonds Racing team to ride the gelding and this claim makes him super competitive this weekend.
I think you can safely overlook the two runs since coming back from a spell at Ipswich as I think he is not an Ipswich track horse. Back to Doomben this weekend I am hoping that he can get the chocolates so that I have some money for some Xmas presents!
Overlook the run of the Terry McCarthy trained Phabeni (5) last start as well over the mile here. He is not a mile horse. He is back in grade and distance for this run and Michael Cahill is aboard. I think he may pop up at some odds.
Selections: 2-7-5-1 rough chance 16
*****************************************************************************************************
Race7
I am a big fan of Stella Victoria (9) trained by Rob Heathcote who ran at Randwick last start. Back home a month to freshen her up and Jeff Lloyd in the saddle this runner is a serious chance here. Get this one home Jeff!
Plucky Girl (3) is resuming here this weekend for the Edmonds Racing team. She has been working well and her two recent trials at the Gold Coast have been okay – despite her not winning them. She is ready for a first up assault this weekend.
Shesees Everything (10) is another Tony Gollan runner. She had a 3-month let up and always races well fresh – do not overlook the chances of this runner. I remember her first up run last start when she seemed to be in a hopeless position and somehow jockey Matthew McGillivray managed to navigate a route home to win at the great odds of $12 (I did tip her that weekend).
Champ Elect (2) from the Munce Racing team is not one that I can overlook lightly. Despite resuming here, I feel she is over the odds at $31 in some markets. She may prove the knock out runner for the bookies in the first leg of the treble this weekend. I expect is she wins that Chris Munce will be elated!
Selections: 9-3-10-2 rough chance 8
****************************************************************************************************
Race 8 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Recognition Stakes Kris Lees trains Just Dreaming (9) who has the tongue tie off this weekend. I assume the smiling and happy stable strapper Melanie Munroe may strap this runner – she will be happy to be seen in the winner’s stalls after the race with a Listed winner!
The Snitzel mare has been racing in some nice races in Sydney recently and has been beaten in both starts after a spell when sent out as favourite. She has won third up before, so I am happy to be with her here. I just think the track may get into the Good range by this part of the day and she will race better on a firm surface!
Niccanova (2) is one of those runners that just keeps giving. Trained by Steve Tregea you just never know what you are going to get! He is a runner that if he puts it together on race day he can make a mess of a field. Jimmy Orman has been booked to ride this weekend – he has had three rides on the Nicconi gelding for 2 wins and 1 third. His best win aboard this runner was in 2017 at Eagle Farm in the Fred Best Classic (Group 3).
Dreams Aplenty (5) is trained by John Zielke and will be ridden my Michael “Muppy” Hellyer. He has drawn barrier 1 and usually loves to lead and dominate in front. The only drama is that Sheiswhatsheis (8) resumes for Tony Gollan from barrier 3 with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle and she loves to bowl along in front and try and run the opposition into the ground. Maybe “Muppy” will let Lloyd lead and sneak in behind and get a nice trail before making his move in the straight.
Either way it will be a race of tactics and horses behind this two may get the best of it if they cut each other up in front.
Now if the speed is break neck in front watch out for Kevin Kemp’s mare Sold For Song (11) to fly home late out wide. Those distinctive pink and blue colours have not found the winning post in 125 weeks but she may just get conditions to suit this weekend. Luke Tarrant, who will go off if she win, is aboard.
She is a favourite of mine I would love to see her win for Kempy and Luke (despite him being a Queenslander). Maybe he will have to get on my shoulders after the race to celebrate – there is a challenge for you Luke as I am no chance of lifting Kempy!
Selections: 9-2-5-11 rough chance 6
***************************************************************************************************
Race 9
Some big numbers in the last race from WINNO. But there have been several early scratching’s that have decimated the field.
I am a fan of Bat A Cat (8) who resumes here for Sunshine Coast trainer Darryl Hansen. He has a solid record with 9 career starts with 4 wins and 5 seconds. He has never won first up – but this weekend I am hoping that is about to change!
He ran a decent barrier trial at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago behind Gracida (race 4 number 3) when he ran second. There is some speed in this race and this could be the key to victory first up this weekend.
I’ve Gotta Nel (11) returns home to Doomben after a venture to Rosehill a fortnight where he ran a solid race. Back to a Class 6 race this weekend, but up in distance, he should be competitive. I think that despite not having a win over 1200 metres in his career the weight relief for apprentice Corey Bayliss could help his chances this weekend.
Desleigh Forster trains Chapter and Verse (13) who posted a solid win at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. This gelding gets back and flies home. With the speed in the race this week he gets some perfect conditions to post two wins in a row!
Selections: 8-11-13-12 rough chance 6

Well it looks an open field this weekend. Corey Bayliss – Jeff Lloyd – Jimmy Orman all have some decent rides. I am going for Jeff Lloyd to get home – he may just clinch the victory in the last race!

FLEMO v WINNO
I am on a roll in the FLEMO / WINNO tipping competition– I think that is four wins in a row against my good mate FLEMO. He did tip a $5 special last weekend. We both have been consistent in recent weeks. Let’s hope we can keep our good form going. I would really like it if we could tip the card one weekend between us! Remember to check out our last-minute tips and preview on Facebook on Saturday morning after the track and final scratchings have been sorted out!
Good luck and good punting!
