WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 16
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 14, 2019
Doomben this week. The track is rated “GOOD” (Thursday morning) and the rail will be out 2 metres for the entire course this weekend. I have just finished my next leg of my USA trip – visiting Key West – Atlanta – New Orleans and now just arrived in Las Vegas! Short and brief this weekend – the Casino lights are waving to me! Race 1 I think the Chris Waller Gold Coast trained runner Follow Suit (3) looks like the improver in the race. Now with one run under his belt after travelling up from NSW I am looking for an improved effort this week against a small field.
The Robert Heathcote trained Ingeegoodbe (2), once he finds the winning post each preparation, can string a few wins together. I have a healthy respect for him after his last win at Eagle Farm over 1820 metres.
The top weight (another Waller runner) Estikhraaj (1) meets Ingeegoodbe (2) better at the weights this weekend and could be an improved runner to watch now that he is second up this preparation. Selections: 3-2-1-6
**************************************************************************************************** Race 2
A small field of two-year-old’s here to face the starter.
The Tony Gollan trained Vincere Volare (5) was super winning on debut – I cannot see any reason why he will not continue on his winning way this weekend.
He is to be ridden by Brad Stewart who is riding in career best form and has a sensational strike rate with the Gollan Racing team of 28% winning rides for the team.
As for the rest of them – Xanthus (4) a debutant from the Matthew Dunn Racing stables at Murwillumbah won nicely in a trial at Deagon recently. He looks an exciting prospect. Selections: 5-4-6-8
**************************************************************************************************** Race 3
Another small field over a mile here.
Looks like a battle of tactics between the South African riders of Robbie Fradd – riding Astoria (4) and Jeff Lloyd aboard Emphasis (2).
I think that now Astoria (4) has gone down in the weights he may be ready to show his best and the mile at Doomben should suit.
I suppose it all depends on how fast Smooth Consul (6) goes in front and if there is some genuine speed in the race.
It is a small field – anything could happen! Selections: 4-2-3-7
************************************************************************************************** Race 4
This time the race looks like a battle of the apprentices – Jag Guthmann-Chester and Baylee Nothdurft.
Jag is aboard the Ben Currie trained Takings (3) who has won his past four starts including a solid win a month ago here over the same distance. Since then he has won at Ipswich when he led all the way and dominated the opposition.
Baylee won on the Tony Gollan runner Get Stuck In (4) last start at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres. He has not won over the mile previously but gives me the impression that he should handle it. I think Takings (3) will be out in front and Get Stuck In (4) will be powering home late – I just hope Jag can get away with some cheap sectionals in front and get the Currie runner home.
Larry Cassidy rides Drumadoir (11) for Lorraine Erhart. This mare looks like she is crying out for the mile – watch for any betting moves for this runner. Selections: 3-4-11-9
**************************************************************************************************** Race 5
This is a tough Class 3 race.
I have gone for some value here with the Kris Lees runner Intrinsic (11) who resumes from a 15-week spell – she is great odds at around $21.
I think last preparation she showed that she has some ability but just never got much luck. I remember when she stormed home behind Femme Fireball – in her last start prior to the spell. She pulled up lame after the race. I think that she has some ability – no official trials so I am gambling that she can claim this lot here this weekend with Michael Cahill (who rode three winners at Doomben on Wednesday) aboard.
The danger is the Tony Gollan runner – Shalwa (11) who resumed with a super impressive win at Ipswich. If she goes like that again here this weekend she will be very hard to beat.
Beacon (4) resumes for the Toby Edmonds Racing team. Her trial looked good and he could be ready to post a win for his new stable. Selections: 10-11-4-9
*************************************************************************************************** Race 6 Another Gollan runner ticks a few boxes here. The topweight Macewen (1) won last start at Eagle Farm. Since resuming from a spell, he has won both starts and is shooting for a hat trick of wins this weekend. He gets in well despite the large weight and should be ridden to perfection by Brad Stewart.
Fuji Flyer (6) ran an honest race last start when beaten by Defence Missile. He is first up this weekend after a spell and has had a barrier trial – I think he may race well fresh.
Archade (4) is from the Desleigh Forster stables. He resumed with a nice effort first up. I expect him to strip fitter for that effort and will be competitive here this weekend. Selections: 1-6-4-2 rough chance 9
**************************************************************************************************** Race 7
I am a fan of Meet Mr Taylor (1) – winning form is great form – he has won both times since resuming and is looking to post three wins in a row for the Kelly Schweida stables. I just think that the wide barrier draw of 14 may be to his demise this weekend. I may be proven wrong!
I like the Edmonds Racing runner I Am Impinge (4) who races well fresh to test the favourite Meet Mr Taylor (1) and probably beat him. This runner trialled well a few weeks ago at the Gold Coast and will sit off the speed in the race and come home hard late. I expect Ryan Maloney to be setting his alight around the 200 metres and hopefully nail Meet Mr Taylor (1) in the shadows of the post.
Do not over look the Steven O’Dea runner here as well first up – Scallopini (2). He has drawn wide as well, however, has had two recent barrier trials and loves to settle back and storm home late.
An interesting race here. Selections: 4-1-2-10
***************************************************************************************************
Race 8 Mishani Electra (11) was solid last start when beaten by King Lear. I see that Ben Currie has gone for a claim this weekend and put Jag Guthmann-Chester aboard this runner. He has drawn midfield an should bounce out in front and take up the running and prove difficult to run down.
Cabeirian (8), trained by Gary Doughty on the Gold Coast, has won his past two starts with Ryan Wiggins aboard. He steps up in grade again this weekend – but is racing well and is so consistent that he cannot be overlooked.
Trommelschlagen (9) from the Heathcote Racing stables comes off a nice win last start and may be able to fill a place here at good odds. Selections: 11-8-9-4
*************************************************************************************************** Race 9
An open race over 1110 metres finishes off the program this weekend.
I was on Snoopy (2) last start and he won – my little beagle Buster was so happy as he has a freezer full of chicken wings (see photo). I think that the reduction in the trip this weekend and the claim for Michael Murphy will see him very competitive again.
I know that Spurcraft (5) resumed and was very dominating in his win at the Sunshine Coast with Bubba Tilley riding him. I just think that every metre that this runner must run past 1000 metres makes his task even more difficult each week – I may be proven wrong!
The horse that will lap up the speed in front and will be finishing at a rate of knots is the Kevin Kemp trained Mr Marbellouz (9).
Interestingly he has gone for the claim with Baylee Nothdurft this weekend – he gets in with a very light weight and could be the one to knock off the more favoured runners. He loves Doomben and I think his run when he stormed home over 1000 metres at Sunshine Coast when defeated by Spurcraft (5) was a run that should be followed. Selections: 2-9-4-5

FLEMO v WINNO
FLEMO claimed a dominant win last weekend in our tipping competition. I hope we can find some winners here on this challenging program and pull one back on Flemo. Remember to check out our last-minute tips and preview on Facebook on Saturday morning after the track and final scratchings have been sorted out!
Good luck and good punting!
