DOOMBEN RACES SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2019
Doomben this week – it is Tattersall’s Club race day. The track is rated “SOFT” (at the time of writing) and the rail will be out 4 metres for the entire course. Some rain is forecast for the rest of the week. How much who knows? The heat is rising for racing in the Southern states with NSW and Victorian racing having some wonderful fields. Meanwhile, back in Brisbane, they seem to be average at best. I managed to watch some of the Eagle Farm races from last weekend. It was great to see horses coming wide and from off the speed to win. This is the way Eagle Farm used to race. Maybe they have finally got it right – let’s wait and see over the coming meetings. Winx lines up again this weekend at Randwick in a seven-horse field – six of them are Chris Waller runners! She looks like she will continue her winning way to post her 31st win in a row. NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
***************************************************************************************************
Race 1 Surprise Bullet is back in grade this weekend and looks ideally placed in a Class 3 race over the mile. Dale Smith remains aboard, and his run last weekend was great.
Larry Cassidy is aboard Drumadoir (7) who won her latest start at the Sunshine Coast when a very short priced favourite. Her previous effort at Eagle Farm when narrowly beaten by Get Stuck In makes her very competitive here.
If there is a knock out chance it must be the Jason Edwards trained Sir Barnabus (4) who is second up this weekend. He has won previously second up and he will appreciate the mile – watch out for a blow out in the first race! Selections: 5-7-4-2
************************************************************************************************** Race 2
One of these distance races that I despise.
Follow Suit (3) won here a fortnight ago. He goes up in weight but hopefully he can continue with that winning form.
His stable mate is Vaucluse Bay (5) who was a gallant second last start. Can he turn the tables on him this weekend? This is his second run in Queensland since being sent north from the Waller stables in Sydney. If I had a dollar for every time these runners win on their second start in Queensland, I think I would be well in front.
Ready For Danger (4) ran fourth last start to Follow Suit (3). If we get some heavy rain and the track gets into the heavy range this is the runner to be on!
Ingeegoodbe (2), trained by Robert Heathcote, just plugged home last start behind Follow Suit (3) – they have put apprentice Baylee Nothdurft on this runner and his 3-kilogram claim could change his fortunes this weekend. Selections: 3-5-4-2 rough chance 8

Race 3
Another small field here for the two-year-old runners – for boys only!
Looks like a battle between NSW and QLD here. Can the Matthew Dunn (NSW) runner - Xanthus (2) improve on his debut effort and go on and a post a win here. Or will it be the Tony Gollan (QLD) runner - Ready To Roam (3) - who posted a solid debut as well at Eagle Farm and has won a trial since that first up effort. The successful Brad Stewart and Tony Gollan team combine here again – can they win?
I like the Matthew Dunn runner to go on and win this week – so it is a NSW win for me Xanthus (2)!
The Odyssey (1) ran in the Magic Millions and resumes here after a short let up. Prior to the Magic Millions he was flying and could surprise them all here this weekend. He is owned by a group of fabulous female owners – look for the group to be celebrating in the winners stalls if Jimmy Orman can get him home this weekend. Selections: 2-3-1-7
*************************************************************************************************** Race 4
This race is for the girls – two-year-old runners!
Tony Gollan has two good runners here both resuming – Niedorp (3) and Perudo (5) - both to be ridden by Stewart. Sorry I should clarify that is Ronnie Stewart and Brad Stewart respectively. That could be a unique record – Gollan/Stewart combination get the quinella in Brisbane!
Niedorp (3) was a beaten favourite on debut at Toowoomba, however, since then has had two impressive barrier trials and looks the one to beat for mine.
Perudo (5), owned by the Eureka Stud group, won on debut as a short-priced favourite at Toowoomba and has had a fortnight between runs. She has drawn nicely in barrier 2 and will probably take up the lead this weekend.
Raay Of Dreams (1) was run down late last weekend over 1300 metres. Back to 1200 metres this weekend – maybe he can turn it around.
Secondofmay (4) won on debut at the Gold Coast. That win looked impressive at the Gold Coast. Can she step up and win this weekend? She has the Jeff Lloyd factor to help her cause. Selections: 3-5-1-4
**************************************************************************************************** Race 5
Mishani Hustler (1) carried a massive weight last start to victory. He is back to set weight conditions this weekend and looks really hard to beat here. Taylor Marshall resumes his association with the colt – he has 4 rides for 3 wins and a second on him. He has drawn well in barrier 7 and should get the run of the race.
Tony Gollan has two runners here again and they both have genuine chances. Trail of Glory (10) and Kittie Kins (11) meet again this weekend. Last start Trail of Glory (10) was sent out at $31 and posted a surprise victory and Kittie Kins (11) ran second in the same race. They are both going to be competitive this weekend.
Les Ross trains Defence Missile (2) who is now third up and normally hits his straps around now – especially over 1200 metres. Look for an improved performance this weekend. The key booking of Jeff Lloyd is a striking factor for this runner. If the rain comes and the track is downgraded this runner is the best wet track horse in the race as well. Selections: 1-10-11-2 rough chances 6 & 8
**************************************************************************************************** Race 6 This is the Sky Racing Tattersall’s Cup over the mile.
Not a race with much depth to be honest.
Emphasis (1) is racing well and keeps on winning so he must be the logical choice.
El Campeador (7) does not win out of turn, however, he is racing fourth up and he may race forward this weekend. He seems to race better when ridden on the speed.
Xebec (5) is second up and normally performs well racing fresh.
The runner that I have some respect for is the David Vandyke runner Coral Coast (8) who is racing second up this weekend. She has never won second up – but her only career win is over the mile. She may represent one at value odds around $13. Selections: 1-7-8-5
**************************************************************************************************** Race 7
A large field greets us here for the first leg of the Treble over 1110 metres.
I like the Steven O’Dea runner Cool Consequence (7) who drops back from 1400 metres to the shorter sprint distance this weekend. In addition, the blinkers go back on and he should race on the speed. He is massive odds at around $18 – so have something on him each way.
Barry Baldwin trains Pork and Beans (10) who is stepping up to Saturday grade for the first time and is looking for a hat trick of wins. He is a lightly raced five-year-old who has a lot of ability. I think he will lead this lot here or sit in behind Linlithgow (15) – watch out that he does not win at some great odds of $12.
Speaking of Linlithgow (15) he resumes here for the Toby Edmonds stables, has drawn barrier 2 and had a recent barrier trial. He will probably take up the lead here with regular rider Jeff Lloyd in the saddle. He is first up – will he have fitness on his side to hold off the other runners with a few runs under their belts?
Tony Gollan has Wooshka (14) in the field and is not without some chance in this open race.
There is some value here in my selections – it may be necessary to play wide here in your exotic bets. Selections: 7-10-15-14
**************************************************************************************************** Race 8 The second feature race on the program – The Tattersall’s Open Handicap over the sprint distance of 1200 metres.
Mr Marbellouz (6) was a great run a fortnight ago behind Spurcraft and gets back to his pet distance of 1200 metres. Baylee Nothdurft retains the ride this weekend and his claim will come in handy. He will be very hard to beat in this race.
Kris Lees trains Tawfiq Boy (8) who is second up here. He has an awesome record second up and I think he is right in this at some decent odds here this weekend. He is $10 in most markets and will sit off the speed and will be flashing home late. With the speed in this race he may get the run of the race.
Plucky Girl (5) resumes this weekend from a 14-week spell. His recent barrier trial on paper looks pretty bad – but I think after watching the video there was some merit in the effort. Watch out for a bold first up effort from the 2018 Tamworth Cup winner.
Mr Markou (11) is up in class but down in the weights that could see him be very competitive here this weekend with Corey Bayliss in the saddle.
Courtza King (4) is another Gollan Racing runner. He has had two recent barrier trials after a 12-week spell. This runner comes to hand very quickly and looked like he was ready to run a bold race in his latest effort in a barrier trial earlier this week – Tuesday 26.2.19. Selections: 6-8-5-11 rough chances 3 & 4
*************************************************************************************************** Race 9
Now we get to the 'Get Out Stakes' – a no metro win over 1350 metres. Take the field in your exotics!
Langhro (3) made his debut for the Steven O’Dea yards last start and maybe just ran out of condition in the final 100 metres. He steps up to 1350 metres this weekend and he should be competitive.
I found some value here in the topweight – Grey Steyne (1) - trained by Lindsay Hatch and to be ridden by Baylee Nothdurft. He resumed at Toowoomba with an impressive winning effort and has a brilliant second up record with 3 starts – 2 wins and a placing. I think that $25 is over the odds here and he will be right in this race.
I Am Impinge (2) resumes and has been trialling very well but has come up with a horrific barrier draw in barrier 17 – maybe the Edmonds Racing team may wait for a better draw and scratch him this weekend.
Constant Flight (6) resumes from a spell here. Trained at the Sunshine Coast by David Vandyke he showed that he is forward enough to win this in a recent barrier trial (12.2.19) where he performed well. He races very well fresh. He is the early market favourite for the race and has been well found in the markets firming from $4.20 to $3.20 since the markets have opened. A good ride for Jimmy Orman to finish off the program.
If you are looking for a roughie to knock all these other runners out do not overlook the Munce Racing runner Helfuchi (12) who won last start at the Sunshine Coast. Despite drawing wide this runner will be suited by the fast tempo of the race and could storm home late out wide. Selections: 3-1-6-5 rough chances 2 & 12
************************************************************************************************** Jockey Challenge
Looks like a battle between Jeff Lloyd and Mark Du Plessis. Lloyd may get the chocolates this weekend. Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW only)
3,4,5 / 1,2,3 / 1,3,5 / 1,10,11 - cost is $81 to $1
Quaddie (races 6 to 9)
1,7,8 / 7,10,15 / 5,6,8,11 / 1,3,6 - cost is $108 to $1
Value Quaddie (races 6 to 9)
1,7 / 7,10,15 / 6,8 / 1,3 - cost is $24 to $1
Treble (races 7 to 9)
7,10,15 / 5,6,8,11 / 1,3,6 - cost is $36 to $1 FLEMO v WINNO
FLEMO claimed a good win in our tipping competition last weekend at Eagle Farm – I just could not find a winner. I hope we can find some winners here on this challenging program. Remember to check out our last-minute tips and preview on Facebook on Saturday morning after the track and final scratchings have been sorted out!
Good luck and good punting!
