WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, AUGUST 24, 2019
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 22, 2019
GOLD COAST RACES – SATURDAY 24 AUGUST 2019 We head down the highway this weekend for a rare Saturday Metropolitan QLD meeting at the Gold Coast where we have a wonderful backdrop of skyscrapers on the horizon looking out from the track. This weekend the track is rated “GOOD” and the rail is out 0.5 metre from the 1400 to the winning post and then true for the remainder of the course. The weather looks superb for the rest of the week and a warm Saturday is forecast. Well nine races for decision – it is time for my preview.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day Race 1 A small field over the long distance to start the day - we seem to get a different result each week here!
Boom Boom Epic (3) likes to lead and I see that the Anderson-Heathcote Racing team have gone for the “boom” apprentice now and put Nick Keal aboard – his three-kilogram claim will come in handy here.
Miss Shanti (4) is one of the four Chris Waller runners who make up half the field. She has been placed in all of her past four starts – she deserves a win with these consistent efforts.
The top weight Happy Go Plucky (1) goes well here at his home track and Ryan Plumb has a great record on the gelding. Selections: 3-4-1-5
************************************************************************************************** Race 2
The locally trained Astro Boy Toy (2) looks well placed by the Toby & Trent Edmonds team. The colt looks like he will appreciate the 1400 metres as he ran home strongly last start at Doomben over 1350 metres.
The topweight is Scathing (1) from the Munce Racing stables. His run behind the impressive Alligator Blood was very good at Doomben. He steps up to 1400 metres for the first time and gets his look at the Gold Coast track for the first time.
A roughie here is the Gollan Racing trained Spiritual Rose (7) who comes off her maiden win last start over 1400 metres at the Sunshine Coast. That was a strong effort and the stable has been in winning form recently. Selections: 2-1-7-3
************************************************************************************************** Race 3
These 1800 metres races at the Gold Coast can turn up some odd results on occasions.
It is only a small field of eight to face the starter so they all should get their chance to win. Aqua Vite (6) ran an enormous race last start at Doomben over the mile. He steps up to a distance that he thrives on and is on his home track for Scott Morrisey. Ryan Wiggins is in the saddle and this runner has been smashed in the betting firming from $9 to $4.00 – there seems to be some confidence here!
Morendi (1) has been racing consistently and if there is some speed in the race he will be finishing off the race solidly for trainer Darren Graham.
Vaucluse Bay (2) raced well last start and looks like he will fill a place. Selections: 6-1-2-3
*************************************************************************************************
Race 4
I love these 900 metres sprints at the Gold Coast – they are always a great spectacle. I like the Kris Lees trained Power Command (5) here. He is second up in Queensland – he reared at the start last time and lost any chance of winning the race but still finished it off strongly. If he can get away on terms with them this weekend, I think he is a great each way chance at around the $7. Another nice ride for Ryan Wiggins!
Stella Power (7), trained by Bryan Dais, has been in the money his last five starts and is a model of consistency. He should be finishing off strongly with some genuine speed in the race.
Boom Chicka Boom (1) is trained locally by Les Kelly and he won last start at Doomben. On that occasion he led from barrier to the finish post. He is drawn ideally in barrier 1 and will go straight to the lead from this barrier.
Selections: 5-7-1-2
*************************************************************************************************** Race 5 No Metro Win race – a massive field to face the starter with some of the better chances drawn woefully.
Dream Master (8) is trained on the track by Edmonds Racing. He is drawn well, is second up and has Jackson Murphy aboard. There is a lot to like about this runner. He likes to lead and set the tempo – he was desperately unlucky first up over the Grafton Carnival going down in the final stride. Since then he was solid at Ipswich. Third up this weekend where he has won before - I think he will be right in it again.
All Pluck (3) is first up and comes off a recent barrier trial win for Gollan Racing. He will be ridden by Baylee Nothdurft. He is drawn well and at $21 represents some good each way value.
Bold Xaavi (1) is trained by Garnett Taylor. He has been racing in the North Queensland and returns south here. He has won here previously and represents good value for your exotic bets.
Snipstream (2) has had no luck with the barrier draw being allocated barrier 20. Donald “Ducky” Baker will be hoping for a few scratchings to get him in a little bit closer than running on Main Beach – apprentice Nick Keal will need to be a magician to get this one home.
Masterati (13) is trained by Steven O’Dea and will be ridden by Stephanie Thornton who rode a winner for him last week at Eagle Farm and at Ipswich on Wednesday. He is second up and will race well here.
The roughie of the race if he makes the field is Spirit’s Pride (16) who is an emergency presently. This Spirit of Boom stallion has always shown some serious ability. He is trained by Michael Nolan, is drawn well and has the services of the tongue poking Dale Smith. If he makes the field I will be having something on him at around $41 each way. Selections: 8-3-1-7 rough chances 2,13 and 16
************************************************************************************************* Race 6 This is a tough race to start the Quaddie this week.
Hollaback Girl (13) won well at Ipswich so maybe she can go on with that strong form here.
Heritage Sash (10), looking for a hat trick of wins, has drawn well and drops in weight from the last start win. Another factor is he has the services of the in-form Matthew McGillivray.
Fuji Flyer (9) is trained on the track by Gillian Heinrich and will be ridden by Luke Dittman. He won a fortnight ago here over 1100 metres and steps up slightly in distance. He is great each way value at $25.
Tony Sears has accepted with Mail Escort (4). His last run at Doomben was strong over 1200 metres and with the claim for Corey Bayliss he gets in well.
Malahat (5) is a runner second up for trainer Aleacia Bennett and comes here with some solid form – it may pay to keep your eye on the markets in case there is any support for this runner on race day.
Enterprise Prince (2), trained by Mick Lakey, comes off a solid win last start at Ipswich. He has drawn poorly in barrier 17 – Brad Stewart will need some luck in running from out there. Selections: 13-10-4-9 rough chances 2 & 5
************************************************************************************************* Race 7 Another 1800 metres race – they are just getting harder now.
Dream Big (10) has won her past two starts on firm ground. I think that this has been the key to this Darryl Hansen trained runner. The extra distance will be right up her alley and Jim Byrne retains his association with her - $6 looks good value.
Galtero (1) was tough when winning last start at Doomben with a massive weight. He has got even more this weekend, but Gollan Racing has elected to offset the impost with the 3-kilogram claim for Nick Keal. He has an average barrier so he will need some luck in running.
La Pulga (9) is trained here by Michael Costa and comes off a win over the track and distance a fortnight ago in similar grade. Local rider Ryan Plumb retains the ride this weekend. Selections: 10-1-9-6 rough chance 2
**************************************************************************************************
Race 8 Another tough race here over 1400 metres.
I think this could be a rough result for punters, so I have gone wide here with my selections.
Ponytales (9) is a Gollan Racing runner who has a superb second up record – however, has never won at the track. Let’s hope that changes this weekend – massive price as well $17.
Time To Play (10) is trained here by Gary Doughty. All five career wins have come at this track and always on dry surfaces. He will get these conditions this weekend and Corey Bayliss’s 2 kilogram claim should see him very competitive on his home track. He is around a tasty $21 in some markets.
The favoured runners are not without genuine chances – just that I have seen them well supported and been disappointing in recent runs. Now I have said that they will probably get up and win here.
Albert’s No Pussy (2) is making his debut in Queensland for Kris Lees. He comes off two solid wins and has carried 61 kilograms on each occasion. He looks well placed here by the stable this weekend.
Tardis (4) has been consistent this preparation – just has not been able to find the winner’s stalls yet. He was held up last start at a vital stage so there were some excuses. Back to his home track maybe a change in fortune.
Le Dude (7) has had four career runs here and never has not been out of a placing. With $41 on offer maybe Jimmy Orman can cause a major upset on this runner. Selections: 9-10-2-4 rough chances 5 & 7
*************************************************************************************************** Race 9
A nice race to finish off the day – 1200 metres Open class.
Freddie Fox Trot (8) won well last start at Eagle Farm after a solid run in the Grafton Ramornie. He is back on his home track and he loves this place. He looks a solid bet to finish off the day.
Handsome Thief (3) did not enjoy the muddling speed in the race last start at Doomben – three weeks between runs and Brad Stewart stays aboard.
Snoopy (7) has drawn a bad barrier but went well last start. If he can get a nice run and not get caught wide on the track, I expect him to put in a solid performance.
Sword of Justice (9) is second up this weekend for Mark Currie – he has a reasonable second up record. Some rough chances include some right down the bottom here – Publishing Power (12) stable mate to Sword of Justice (9). Drachenfels (13) is a Bjorn Baker trained runner making his debut on the track but this stable seems to have a wonderful success rate when they bring runners to the Gold Coast – he has been racing consistently and his placing last start at Rosehill was solid.
Tisani Magic (14) is on the quick back up after a solid run last weekend – he led on that occasion and fought on well. He has to contend with a wide barrier on a track where he has only had one run for a solid second. Selections: 8-3-13-7 rough chances 9,12 and 14
