EF SEPT 30 - PEA EYE CEE SCORES CLINICAL WIN
By Graham Potter | Thursday, October 1, 2009
Eagle Farm, September 30, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - Out 11.5m. Class 3 Plate (Set Weights) - 1800m. Time: 1-50.27. 1 Pea Eye Cee; 2 My Counsel; 3 Starelie.
The Bryan Guy trained Pea Eye Cee was given a gem of a ride by Jim Byrne and the grey returned the compliment by playing his part by producing a sustained finishing effort which carried the day.
Pea Eye Cee was given the run of the race settling in third spot on the rail. The four-year-old had My Counsel just ahead of him to his outside and these two runners tracked the front-running Ken And Kim early in the sweep to the turn.
Approaching the corner, Byrne slipped past My Counsel and Pea Eye Cee was perfectly poised to strike on straightening. The gelding went past a tiring Ken And Kim at the 200m mark and went on with it to easily hold off My Counsel who made up some ground late out wide on the track.
This was Pea Eye Cee’s fourth win from twelve starts and his third win in this current extended preparation.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bryan Guy: “You know how the horse got its name. Take it as it’s said, P ... I ... C. It stands for Pissed Idiot’s Club. It’s true. The owners are all mates who have been to school together. They’ve been friends for a lot of years and they all used to get out on the drink, as young blokes do, and they named the horse P ... I ... C. The Pissed Idiots Club.
The horse cost $100000 as a yearling. At this stage we are getting him over ground. He is not a world-beater, but as he is getting older he is getting more mature and stronger. He has been picking up a race regularly enough to pay his way.”
Jockey Jim Byrne: “Look, I rode him in work early on ... very early in his career. I kept asking Bryan (Guy) what was the horse? What was the horse? This was very early on.
He’s done a good job. He’s been in a long time this prep. He’ll go out now and when he comes back he might make a nice Saturday stayer sort of thing."
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Pee Eye Cee): 3.60 out to 4.20. Favourite (My Counsel): 2.40 out to 2.50.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: The starter for this event Mr M. Henderson reported that the start was effected manually due to a malfunction of the electrical system.
Ken And Kim (App S. Bogenhuber) jumped in the air at the start. Approaching the home turn Starelie (B. Pengelly) shifted out to improve taking My Counsel (App M. Hellyer) and Golden Balls (S. Katsidis) wider on the track. Making the home turn My Counsel then shifted out away from Starelie and as a result Golden Balls was forced wider on the track. A post race veterinary examination of Golden Balls revealed no abnormalities.
