DOOM OCT 03 - PUNCH UP LANDS KNOCKOUT BLOW
By Matthew Grimson | Sunday, October 4, 2009
Doomben, October 3, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 6m. Class 6 Plate (Set Weights) - 1350m. Time: 1-19.77. 1 Punch Up; 2 Seesawing; 3 Plenty Of Practise.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Jockey Larry Cassidy: “There just didn’t look to be much speed and I knew Owen Turpin (on Plenty Of Practise) might want to lead and I thought well, I might beat you out then hopefully they will leave us alone. So I sort of made my intentions clear from the start and especially when he began so well that made it even better. I sort of gained a length there and we got across. We were able to get a soft run and when they came at me I just let him slide that little more and we was still doing no work and he was able to kick on the corner.
“It was a really good performance because he is a pretty big sort of looking horse. I just looked at him and thought he might need the run. They said, you know, he is more forward than you think and he can still benefit from that which is good.
“I quite liked him because the best thing was he’s got good gate speed and then he relaxes underneath you ... so that that’s the best thing. So when he gets fitter and gets a few more runs under his belt, well going over ground is no problem.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Punch Up): 5.00 steady. Favourite (Plenty Of Practise): 2.00 out to 2.25 in to 2.20. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Shortly after 8.30 am this morning, trainer A. Bailey contacted stewards to advise that he had located a used syringe in the vacinity of the stable of Tears'N'cheers, which was a runner at this afternoon's meeting. Mr Bailey was concerned with this issue and sought permission from stewards to withdraw Tears'N'cheers from today's meeting. Stewards permitted the withdrawal of the horse at 8.51 am. A blood and urine sample was taken from Tears'N'cheers at the stable complex of A. Bailey, and the syringe was also submitted to the Queensland Government Racing Science Centre for analysis. An inquiry till be continued when the results of these tests are known.
Stewards have opened an inquiry into the riding tactics employed on Plenty Of Practise (O. Turpin). After taking evidence from O. Turpin and his master, trainer Mr F. Phillips, the inquiry was adjourned to 10 am at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on Friday, 9 October.
