WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, JANUARY 25
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 23, 2020
SUNSHINE COAST RACES – SATURDAY 25 JANUARY 2020 Sunshine Coast races this weekend. The track is rated “SOFT” and the rail is in the true position for the entire course. With rain and storms forecast for the rest of the week in Queensland the track may get posted at HEAVY come race day – keep your eye on the conditions,
A massive ten race program with the feature Sunshine Coast Cup scheduled for late in the program.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day Race 1 A small field here to start the day. Ruby Guru (3) won last start and has an impressive record here with four wins from six starts. I think she will be suited here again with the sting out of the ground.
Ethan Ensby scratched Torrens (7) last weekend – look for an impressive effort here. He gets his first look at a wet track – if he handles the conditions he looks progressive enough to win this race. Selections:
3 – Ruby Guru 7 – Torrens 1 – Capital Gain 2 – Doukhan Race 2
Tunero (4) comes off some solid runs in Sydney and is first up here in Queensland. Matthew McGillivray is in the saddle after a short period on the sidelines. Looks the one to beat. Selections:
4 – Tunero 1 – Galaxy Guru 5 – Birkin Black 11 – Vienna Moon Race 3 The two-year old’s go around here. Stuart Kendrick has many chances and he could well fill all the placings.
I am going for Poupee (11) to be ridden by Luke Tarrant. This runner was stiff first up at Doomben when sent out as favourite. I think she will be better for the race start and be difficult to roll here.
The stable mate The Brotherhood (1) won first up here and is sure to go on with it on his home track. He gets in well at the set weights.
Edmonds Racing trains Queen Kay (6) she won on debut at the Gold Coast and looks above average – respect her. Selections:
11 – Poupee 1 - The Brotherhood 6 – Queen Kay 8 – Cosmic Gossip Race 4
Tough race this one. Lauren Abbott trains One Stryke (2) who was brave first up. I thought he had actually won the race as did she, but he was beaten in the final bound! Jimmy Orman back up and on a track that he races well – looks great value at around $15.
Tough to pick anything else here – maybe something on Tony Gollan’s runner Hollaback Girl (10) who is first up after a short break. She races well fresh so do not overlook her here. Selections:
2 – One Stryke 10 – Hollaback Girl 12 – Master Baylee 14 – Yeahnah Race 5
Tycoon Ace (3), trained Maddy & Tony Sears, looks well placed here. He won three starts ago here and drew wide last start at the Gold Coast and got caught wide. The effort was pretty good. With the speed on here and the better barrier look for him to be coming home late in the centre of the track with Jimmy Orman wielding the whip!
Spurcraft (2) loves these shorter distances and with apprentice Adin Thompson aboard this weekend gets into the race with a great weight due to his three-kilogram claim. Thompson is riding well of late and posted his first city weekend win at Eagle Farm last weekend. Selections:
3 – Tycoon Ace 2 – Spurcraft 4 – Guard of Honour 1 - Tarzan Race 6 A tough no metro win race here. You may as well throw a dart at the form guide to try to pick your winner!
The local runner Winter Passage (5) races well here. Maybe she can win a hat trick of wins this weekend.
Gracie Bell (7) won well first up well but is unplaced in all three second up career runs. That may be a big drama here despite Stephanie Thornton being aboard.
Happy Hooves (6) last start was solid. Back in distance and a wet track with Baylee Nothdurft aboard – could be one to knock over the fancied runners. Selections:
5 – Winter Passage 6 – Happy Hooves 7 – Gracie Belle 3 – Fomo Race 7
The second leg of the no metro win races! What a way to start the Quaddie this weekend!
Kelly Schweida Racing’s Ramtastic (7) ran a superb race in the Magic Millions Country Cup. With Jackson Murphy abord this weekend and on a damp track he gets conditions to suit! Forgive the Gold Coast run where he drew wide and was snagged back to the rear of the field and had to be ridden for luck. Look for “McLovin” (Jackson Murphy) to be positive from the good barrier this weekend and race probably three pairs back and have this gelding every chance. A local runner to watch is Coral Bay (3) who has won all 7 career starts here – an impressive record on his home track. Selections:
7 – Ramtastic 3 – Coral Bay 4 – Excelebrazione 5 – Doctor Zeus Race 8
QTIS race over 1000 metres.
Toby and Trent Edmonds have two good chances here Betaima (5) and Champagne Cuddles (7). Betaima (5) has won her two recent trials on the Gold Coast in solid fashion. She is first up here this weekend – watch out for a bold effort! I see that the stable has gone with Baylee Nothdurft to ride. There is a pretty good strike rate when Baylee and Edmonds Racing team up.
The top weight Better Reflection (1) always races well fresh but must carry a large weight on a wet track. If she can handle the damp track and it doesn’t get into the heavy range, she should race well.
Golly Hut (6) is an interesting runner trained by Malcolm Reynolds and to be ridden by Michael Hellyer. He was scratched from an earlier race for this race and has won two starts here. He won well first up and posted a good time. I think that he will be improved by that run and cannot be overlooked. Selections:
5 – Betaima 6 – Golly Hut 1 – Better Reflection 7 – Champagne Jet Race 9
The feature race the Sunshine Coast Cup.
Let it rain … let it rain!
The more it rains the further the Les Ross trained River Racer (10) should win by! The run at the Gold Coast in the Magic Millions QTIS when beaten in a narrow photo by Outback Barbie was good enough form for this race. He won the Glasshouse here last year on a heavy track over this distance. Brad Stewart is aboard – he will be hard to stop if the track is rain affected.
Steven O’Dea trains Scallopini (11) who loves a soft track and should get that this weekend. He was hampered in the running at the Gold Coast in the Magic Millions Sprint and never got a clear crack at them. He is third up this weekend where he thrives – again a great chance. Pennino (13) comes off a win last weekend and is in the short turn around. Must have done well.
Niccanova (2) – how brave was he last start! Things went wrong and he was taken to the lead by Jimmy Orman but he kept them all at bay and won the listed Bernborough. This Steve Tregea trained gelding loves wet tracks as well. Selections:
10 – River Racer 11 – Scallopini 13 – Pennino 2 – Niccanova Rough chances 1 & 3 Race 10
The Robert Heathcote pair look well placed here – Ziemba (1) and Mosshiki (3). Mosshiki (3) is on the quick back up from last weekend and probably will appreciate the mile here.
Kim Alicia (8), from the Desleigh Forster yards, will appreciate the wet ground and the mile – Mark Du Plessis to ride. The Edmonds Racing runner Baroda (7) has been working well through the grades and if she handles the wet track and rise in class is a definite blow out chance. Selections:
3 – Mosshiki 8 – Kim Alicia 1 – Ziemba 7 – Baroda Rough chance 4
