SCST OCT 04 - LUCKY SPIN SCORES IN COMFORTABLE FASHION
By Graham Potter | Monday, October 5, 2009
Sunshine Coast, October 4, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m. Class 1 Handicap - 1400m. Time: 1-25.74. 1 Lucky Spin; 2 Northern Apache; 3 Status King.
The Danny Bougoure trained Lucky Spin, who finished as a beaten favourite in his first two starts in Queensland, repaid his followers here when winning in comfortable fashion at reasonable odds.
Jockey Michael Cahill sent the gelding about his business early in the straight. The outsider Northern Apache did threaten briefly, but Lucky Spin had his race safely won well before he crossed the line to notch up his second career victory in his thirteenth start.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Danny Bougoure: “Yeah, I think he’ll get over a mile, mate. He should have won here the other day (when a beaten favourite when finishing a long-neck second to Swell). He just didn’t have a lot of luck. He got the breaks today and won well. Once he gets to a mile he’ll probably be better again.
“The owners are owners I had in Melbourne. They bought him and sent him to me. They only paid $10000, so he is paying his way.”
Jockey Michael Cahill: “He is getting a bit better each time. If he can run a mile or a bit further there might be some hope for him. He feels like he will. He is a well bred horse. He’s very casual. I rode him here last time in his most recent start. I found him very lazy. If I had a ride on him earlier I’d probably have won on him that day ... knowing the horse just took a while to get going. Today I got him going early. I learn.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Lucky Spin): 2.50 out to 3.50. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Gondola Girl was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon in its race day stall prior to the race and found to have a laceration and small amount of blood in its near-side nostril. Following the examination, Gondola Girl was cleared to start.
Lucky Spin (M. Cahill) was slow to begin. On jumping away, Northern Apache (C. Reith) and Pleasure Shot (A. Spinks) came together and made contact, resulting in Northern Apache becoming unbalanced and shifted out, tightening Gondola Girl (D. Browne) on to Status King (B. Cornell). Sheemon (M. Radecker) raced wide in the early stages.
Passing the 600m, Status King shifted out to improve and had to be steadied from the heels of Sobo (M. Hellyer). Status King over-raced in the middle stages. Leaving the 200m, Slepner (J. Taylor) was disappointed for a run to the outside of Craiglea King (L. Appo) and inside Gondola Girl (D. Browne), and as a result Slepner had to be steadied and shift wider on the track to obtain clear running. Sobo had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the straight. Northern Apache and Pleasure Shot raced wide for the majority of the event. Northern Apache lost its near-fore plate in running.
A post-race veterinary examination of Mulsanne (P. Hammersley), which compounded in the straight, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
