SCST OCT 04 - JOBURG ANGEL’S COME FROM BEHIND WIN
By Graham Potter | Tuesday, October 6, 2009
Sunshine Coast, October 4, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m. Class 2 Handicap - 1200m. Time: 1-13.46. 1 Joburg Angel; 2 Detected; 3 Explore The World.
The Jason McLachlan trained Joburg Angel finished right over the top of his opposition here to land his third career success.
The four-year-old benefitted from an extremely patient ride from jockey Ken Pope, who had Joburg Angel back well off the speed in the early part. In fact, early in the straight, it appeared that Joburg Angel might have been too far back to be able to have a major say, but Pope knew exactly what he had underneath him.
When Pope asked Joburg Angel to go, the gelding set about his business and he began to reel in the leaders, gradually at first, and then with a flourish as he extended away in the final strides to win by a length.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Jason McLachlan: “He always plays up a bit beforehand. Look, he’s run was enormous the other day (when third over the same track and distance). He is just purely a sprinter. I put Kenny (Pope) on him. Nobody rides this track better than K. Pope, mate.”
Jockey Ken Pope: “Yeah, he was a bit boisterous beforehand, but he felt fine once he got out there. He travelled well where he was. Jason (McLachlan) told me not to bustle him ... just have him where-ever he was travelling and that’s where he wanted to travel the horse. He got a nice run through them and he let down well.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Joburg Angel): 3.20 out to 3.50. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: The start of this race was delayed when Famous Cry proved difficult to load. Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that a warning was being placed on the gelding regarding its barrier manners. Explore The World (M. Morris) blundered on jumping away. Famous Cry (S. Holcombe) jumped away awkwardly.
M. Morris, rider of Explore The World, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 1000m he directed his mount to the inside of Craiglea Apollo (L. Appo) when riding his mount along and shifted in, tightening Canadian Chief (S. Kennedy), which was taken in on to Coen (K. James), which was forced in on to Top Resource (K. Sawyers), which in turn was taken in on to Silversmith (P. Hammersley), which struck the heels of Top Resource and blundered. M. Morris was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight, 4 October and to expire at midnight, 18 October. Joburg Angel (K. Pope) was also hampered as a consequence of this incident.
Approaching the 800m, Coen shifted in momentarily, resulting in Top Resource being steadied. A short distance later, Coen shifted out, resulting in Canadian Chief, which was following, being taken wider on the track.
Near the 300m, Joburg Angel (K. Pope) shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so forced Coen (K. James) wider on the track. Passing the 100m, Raining Kings (O. Turpin) improved to the inside of Coen, which shifted in, resulting in Raining Kings having to be steadied. Apprentice K. James, rider of Coen, was advised to exercise more care when her mounts shift ground. Famous Cry and Detected (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of Top Resource revealed gelding to have sustained a laceration to the near-hind leg. Trainer R. Bradshaw will be advised to provide a veterinary clearance for the horse.
A post-race veterinary examination of Silversmith revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the off-fore pastern and bruising to the near fore tendon. Trainer J. Fraser will be advised to provide a veterinary clearance for the horse.
