WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, MARCH 28, 2020
By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 27, 2020
DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 28 MARCH 2020 Doomben races this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The weather is forecast to be warm but then storms late in the week could make the track rain affected – let’s hope that does not occur. With COVID-19 impacting our daily lives – may I just say stay safe and keep your family and friends healthy. Again, if you can assist with any one in our community or people who need assistance try and help them out!
Time to look at the program for this week.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day Race 1 The babies start off the day today. Two-year old’s having a run!
The Robert Heathcote trained Minjee (10) made her debut on a heavy track here a fortnight ago. I think she didn’t appreciate the heavy track. This weekend I expect a dramatic improvement on the better surface.
Snappy Reply (6) is a Gollan Racing runner who won on debut at the Sunshine Coast in fine fashion and cannot be overlooked.
Clairvue Star (1), trained by Chris Waller on the Gold Coast, won on debut over 1000 metres. Despite the rise in the weights he will be competitive again this weekend.
Neutron (4) is a debutant for Kacy Fogden who has won two recent trials in preparation for this run. He will be very difficult to hold out if he brings those solid trial wins to the Doomben track this weekend. Selections:
10 – Minjee 6 – Snappy Reply 1 – Clairvue Star 4 – Neutron Rough chance – (7) Three Phase Race 2
A distance race – these are always tough. Not a race I like.
I think that there looks like a progressive runner here from the Stuart Kendrick stables – Cabochon Lil (5). She won last start on her home track over 1800 metres. The way she races, settling back and storming home, probably will suit her this weekend with some genuine tempo in this race.
The Kris Lees runners Kellstorm (1) and Calibration (2) will be competitive and back up from last weekend. Selections:
5 – Cabochon Lil 1 – Kellstorm 2 – Calibration 6 – Populist Race 3 An open race over 2200 metres. Another tough race.
I think the Matthew Smith trained Sydney runner is the way to go here – Ilwendo (7). This runner has made a previous dash to Doomben and got the chocolates. This weekend, second up here if they can get him across the border blockages, he should be ready to win.
Raqeeq (5) is back to a more suitable distance this weekend. I think the longer the races are the better this runner goes.
Eric The Eel (8) was a super run on the Gold Coast last start. He steps up in distance again – races over the 2200 for the first time but he loves to settle at the rear of the field and storm home. With only nine runners to face this weekend he does not face an impossible task as he should be able to come wide and late without any issues. Ryan Maloney is aboard this weekend. Selections:
7 – Ilwendo 5– Raqeeq 8 – Eric The Eel 4 – Mongolian Wolf Race 4
A race over a mile.
There is some speed in this race with Downloading (1) probably taking up the running and ensuring this race will be run at a genuine tempo.
Last start La Jument (11) was defeated narrowly over 1500 metres at Eagle Farm. He is only a lightly raced six-year-old facing the starter only for the fourth career start. I think with the claim for Madeline Wishart this weekend (3 kilograms) he is well placed here. He races as if the mile will be right up his alley and I think he will be very hard to knock off.
Mark Currie has two genuine chances here in Tesarc (4) and Junction (10).
Tesarc (4) won well here last start over 1350 metres at a midweek meeting. That run suggested that he is looking for further and the mile this weekend should be suitable. Brad Stewart retains the ride. Watch out for the Michael Costa trained La Pulga (6) who is second up here. He has a solid record second up and loves these longer distances – Robbie Fradd to ride. Selections:
11 – La Jument 4 – Tesarc 6 – La Pulga 10 – Junction Rough chance – (1) Downloading Race 5 A class 6 sprint over 1050 metres.
The Barry Lockwood runner Adoradancer (14) appeals here with Dale Smith in the pig skin. This mare has a tremendous third up record and loves the Doomben circuit - so there are two factors in her favour this weekend – oh, well probably one more, the jockey – that Dale Smith bloke who has had ten rides on her for 2 wins and 3 seconds. At $13 she is great each way value.
Pizonie (13) was I think a little unlucky last start in the running - it may be smart to overlook that effort.
Royal Witness (13) is a Joe Pride NSW invader who is a solid favourite in the early markets at $2.40. He was beaten in the last stride at Canberra last start and on that run must be respected here. Another nice chance for Matthew McGillivray. Selections:
14 – Adoradancer 6 – Royal Witness 13 – Pizonie 9 – Love You Lucy Rough chance – (2) Desert Man Race 6 The first leg of the Quaddie.
Seentoomany (4) produced a solid run at the Gold Coast last start after returning to Queensland following a win in Sydney. She worked home solidly at the Gold Coast where the track was rain affected and late in the program runners made hard work in making up ground late.
Sofie’s Gold Class (4) is a last start winner and now she has found the winning post they can sometimes go on with it.
Written With Ease (11) was caught wide last start on the Gold Coast. She is drawn wide again this weekend, however, should be able to be ridden quieter and hopefully get a better run this start. She will be suited by some speed in the race – but if she jumps well, she may push forward and sit in behind the likely leader Sister Patti (6). Jimmy Orman rides.
Lashoni (10) won here last start at a midweek meeting after some good runs at Eagle Farm. She could be a knock out chance this weekend at long odds. Selections:
5 – Seentoomany 4 – Sofie’s Gold Class 11 – Written With Ease 10 – Lashoni Rough chances – (8) Hold On Race 7 A no metro win race – they just get harder!
Edmonds Racing is represented with Heritage Sash (13) in this open race. He comes off a solid win at his home track on the Gold Coast last start. I think that he will be able to go on with that good effort here this weekend.
Weboughtazou (5) is trained by David Vandyke. The gelding was sent out a very short priced favourite at the Sunshine Coast and won last start with Brad Stewart in the saddle. They reunite here for this tougher assignment at Doomben – his sectionals were solid last start and he will be hard to roll.
Jardin Rouge (6) was not suited last start with the heavy track at the Gold Coast. Back on top of the ground this weekend – watch out for a better effort.
Gypsy Toff (2) I think is well placed here by trainer Tom Button. He has booked Nick Keal to ride and his three-kilogram claim will assist this weekend but I am not too sure he will run out a solid 1200 metres. Selections:
13 – Heritage Sash 5 – Weboughtazou 6 – Jardin Rouge 2 – Gypsy Toff Rough chance – (4) Ditmas Race 8 Looks like some runners down the bottom of the field here may be tough to knock off.
Magic Fox (16), trained by Kelly Schweida Racing and ridden by Jackson Murphy, was unlucky a fortnight ago when he struck a wet / heavy track after a nine-week let up. He put in a solid effort on a track that he was not suited by. He should get better conditions this weekend and should be right in the finish.
Keep On Loving You (17) comes out of the same race and may have been in the same boat and not appreciated the wet track. If he takes his place in the field, he could be a value runner at around $20 that could cause an upset.
Qiji Phoenix (2) has been racing in better quality fields without much luck lately. Apprentice Justin Huxtable takes the ride this weekend and his 2-kilogram claim will come in handy.
Mr Bellagio (6) has a superb record at this track and at $21 could be another blow out chance. Selections:
16 – Magic Fox 17 – Keep On Loving You 2 – Qiji Phoenix 6 – Mr Bellagio Rough chance – (12) – Dissolution Race 9 The last race of the day. A solid three-year-old race here with some nice types going around.
Ballistic Boy (3) from the Chris Anderson yards is the class runner here. If he turns up, despite the big weight, I can see him winning the last race.
There are some other serious chances here as well – some at odds.
The Toby & Trent Edmonds runner Vanna Girl (6) hit some good form last preparation with two wins prior to a spell. She now has had a short let up of 7 weeks and a recent solid hit out in a barrier trial. I think that, whilst this race may be short of her best, she looks ideally placed in a race where some speed is engaged and she will be able to trail them and make her run late.
Commanconquer (7) has been dynamic with two wins from two career starts. Jimmy Orman has won on him in both starts and he also has a superb general strike rate on Steve Tregea trained horses. Whilst I have not put this runner on top here, I have a healthy respect for him.
There are two roughies here that could cause a massive upset and make the bookmakers (well the ones that are not on course) happy! The first is Wapiti (11) and the other Dawson Delight (16).
Gary Duncan and Jake Bayliss combine with Wapiti (11) who resumes from a spell of 17 weeks. There have been no official trials – but my Sunny Coast spies tell me his work has been good on the track in the lead up to this first up effort.
Dawson Delight, $81 in some markets, is trained at the Sunshine Coast and was very good last preparation running some very good races. She looked very forward in a recent trial – maybe a chance at massive odds for Larry Cassidy.
The top weight is Guntantes (1) and he loves Doomben. Must carry a massive weight and has drawn wide, but Nick Keal has been booked by Rob Heathcote to ride this runner. He is a strong rider and his three-kilogram claim brings him right into the race. Selections:
3 – Ballistic Boy 6 – Vanna Girl 7 - Commandconquer 11 – Wapiti Rough chances – (1) Guntantes and (16) – Dawson Delight
______________________________________________________________________ Jockey’s Challenge
Looks like a solid battle between a few jockeys – Jimmy Orman and Robbie Fradd. Orman has some nice rides – and if he gets some luck could be a major upset winner this weekend. Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW only)

FLEMO smashed WINNO last weekend with some great tipping. The footy has stopped – the AFL has stopped – I am not permitted to be at the track, so I suppose it will be a weekend with Buster this weekend – maybe another day at the beach or just resting with him at home. Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings!
