DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 11 APRIL 2020
Doomben races this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The weather is forecast to be warm with some intermittent showers as we get closer to race day.
It is Easter …. I cannot go to the track to take photos. The cinemas are shut. The clubs and pubs are closed.
Seems like I will just have to stay home and listen to Josh Fleming call the races on Sky Racing. Plus get his intermittent messages from his telling me that “QLD is in front” in our weekly tipping competition.
PS – has anyone heard the term COVID-19 in recent weeks? Just checking!
Be safe over the weekend and have a safe Easter!
Time to look at the program for this week at Doomben. ______________________________________________________________________
Race 1
The two-year old’s start off the day today.
The Chris Anderson trained runner named after ME – Winn’em (14) is my selection here. She was solid on debut at the Sunshine Coast and looked like she needed the run when she paraded. This weekend she will be fitter for that effort, and I think at $17 she is amazing value. Drawn well and on a soft track here this weekend she will race close to the speed with Mark Du Plessis in the saddle and then hopefully kick clear late and get the Easter chocolates for us all!
Stuart Kendrick trains The Diamond (5) with Ryan Wiggins aboard. Solid run on debut at the Sunshine Coast and will be better for that effort.
Batangas Entry (1) is a debutant for Kelly Schweida Racing. The recent two trials were impressive, and this son of Vancouver could be one to show up and massive odds.
The Gollan Racing first starter Isotope (7) has been well supported since the markets opened. Baylee Nothdurft is aboard. When they back these runners they usually run well.
Selections:
14 – Winn’em 5 – The Diamond 1 – Batangas Entry 6 – Dash for Dreams Rough chance – (7) Isotope Race 2
This is a tough race – a maiden race on a Saturday!
Desleigh Forster trains Flash Patch (4) who is second up after a great effort at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago. He is a well-bred gelding and looks well placed here. It could be an opening race to race double to jockey Mark Du Plessis! The winkers go on for the first time for this runner as well.
Dafeeenah (6), who had an 86-week spell after an injury, recently returned to the races and has run two nice placings. It is trained by Jon Walk and the smiling assassin of racing Dale Smith is taking the reins this weekend. I like this one to cause an upset.
Jake Bayliss and David Vandyke combine again this weekend after a winner last week with Musicmaker (12). She is second up here and is short in the markets.
Selections:
4 – Flash Patch 6 – Dafeenah 12 – Musicmaker 14 – Windchill Rough chance – (10) Gala Rain Race 3
Another two-year-old race here.
Most of these runners have been seen before and some have some solid winning form – so you probably can bet with some confidence in this race.
There is some serious early speed in this race.
Originally, I thought that the Tony Gollan runner Snappy Reply (6) would jump and lead like he did last time at Doomben when he was run down in the last bound by Minjee (5). Now after reviewing the race she will probably be pressured in front here this weekend by several runners that could set it up nicely for something to storm home late!
Minjee (5) and Dusty Tycoon (1) are both trained by Robert Heathcote and will be at opposite ends of the field. Dusty Tycoon (1) has two recent barrier trials after his Magic Millions failure and he has looked very forward in both of those trials. He gets a great weight relief with the 2-kilogram claim for apprentice Adin Thompson. He must be respected.
Now with these runners going hard in front and, despite the increase in the weights, Heathcote has booked apprentice Stephanie Thornton to ride his other runner Minjee (5). She meets Snappy Reply (6) at the same weight here this weekend with the claim. I think that Minjee (5) will be getting home late and hard and with some luck and an uninterrupted run could beat the early favourite again here this weekend.
Selections:
5 – Minjee 6– Snappy Reply 1 – Dusty Tycoon 4– Charlie Sphere Race 4
Star Of Michelin (2) won last start at Eagle Farm over the mile. He goes up in the weight here but I still believe he will be extremely difficult to knock off here.
The stable mate is Mymming (6) who is around the $15 mark and will be ridden by Jimmy Orman. This mare gets better as she gets up in distance. This is her third run this preparation – I just think she is ready to show her best.
Smart Meteor (10) is a Chris Munce Racing runner who raced in some good quality races last preparation. His last run prior to the spell was in the Group 3 Grand Prix. This race is a fair bit easier than that race. He is second up this weekend and will be coming home late.
Selections:
6 – Mymming 2 – Star of Michelin 10 – Smart Meteor 8 – Coastal Prince Race 5
A BM 72 race over 2030 metres. A tough race to assess.
Populist (8) I thought was unlucky when sent out as favourite here a fortnight ago. I think with some luck in running and apprentice Corey Bayliss’ s claim he looks well place here this weekend.
Galtero (1) is a dual acceptor and was in the previous race over the mile but will run here. I liked him in the mile race, however, he will settle back and, if there is some genuine speed in the race and the race is run at a true tempo, he will get home late and will be in the finish for sure.
Fastnet Cyclone (3), despite being a seven-year-old, has been in good form of late and deserves a chance to win in the city.
The Chris Munce trained Al Jood (5) comes off a good performance when winning at the Sunshine Coast last start over 1800 metres. I think she will love the extra trip. She is only a lightly raced three-year-old filly that looks to have plenty of improvement in her.
Selections:
8 – Populist 1 – Galtero 5 – Al Jood 3 – Fastnet Cyclone Rough chance – (4) Cabochon Lil
Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie.
You could chuck a dart at the form guide and still miss the winner!
Heathcote Racing has 4 of the 11 runners of the field. They all do have some chance as well. His runners Ziemba (4) and the longest price of them all Warp Speed (12) could run well here.
Chris Anderson’s Ballistic Boy (3) is racing consistently. I probably prefer him across the road at Eagle Farm but I think his class will see him perform at his peak in this race.
Stampe (2) is another good chance for the Munce Racing team. His last two efforts have been tremendous and with the claim for stable apprentice Justin Huxtable looks well placed in this class. Wapiti (7) is second up for trainer Gary Duncan. He won last time in second up in a very good effort at this track. Jake Bayliss rode him when he resumed and he paraded a little heavy and would have derived plenty of benefit from that run. This is a tougher assignment but he has always looked above average this one!
Selections:
3 – Ballistic Boy 2 – Stampe 7 – Wapiti 12 – Warp Speed Rough chances – (4) Ziemba (5) Jeweliana
Race 7
Profit (14) is a dual acceptor and was scratched from the previous race. He is a short-priced favourite here and probably is the class runner of the field. Jimmy Orman will ride him this weekend and he will be very difficult to beat. I just want to see him win before I get back on him – so I am saying he will get beaten here this weekend. You know what that means – he will win by 4 lengths now!
I like the Gollan Racing runner A Man To Match (8) to roll the favourite. He has never won first up in four efforts, so the odds are really stacked against me. He resumes here after a 13-week break. His recent trial looked solid.
His stable mate is Shalwa (10) who won last start dominating the whole race at Eagle Farm with apprentice Adin Thompson aboard. They remain together this weekend. She has drawn well enough to go forward and set up a solid tempo in front. I think that with the solid speed she can keep going but she may be susceptible late if something flies home out wide.
The other Gollan runner is Tokoriki Lad (6) who was caught wide last start at the Gold Coast and still managed to finish off the race strongly. Anthony Allen has the ride this weekend. He doesn’t ride much in town but can sit down and ride hard with the whip. This runner needs some standing over and his riding style will suit him and keep his mind on the job.
Selections:
8 – A Man To Match 14 – Profit 10 – Shalwa 6 – Tokoriki Lad Rough chance – (4) Valario Race 8
Open class race over 1200 metres.
The class runner Baccarat Baby makes her return here for David Vandyke and will be ridden by her regular rider Michael Hellyer. She had a recent trial at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track and wasn’t asked to do much in the running. Look for her to return to racing with a BANG! She likes this Doomben track and usually races well fresh. I would have liked to see one more trial, but Vandyke is a master of getting his horses to perform first up.
Her track mate is Tambo’s Mate trained by Stuart Kendrick at the Sunshine Coast as well. He resumes from a 17 week spell and comes to hand very quickly. His work on the track has been exceptional and looks the testing material for the early pre post favourite. On race day I would not be surprised if this runner starts favourite.
Les Ross Racing has two nice chances as well – River Racer (4) and Mishani Hustler (5). Both go well on soft or wet surfaces and will be well supported if there is rain around come Saturday.
Selections: 1 – Baccarat Baby 3 – Tambo’s Mate 4 – River Racer 5 – Mishani Hustler Race 9
The last race of the day – hopefully you have plenty in your pockets and the Easter Bunny comes to your place tonight!
Again, there is some speed in this race. I think something may storm home late … or hop out of the ground!
Fasano (12) is from the Robert Heathcote Racing stables. I think he is the way to get home here and load up prior to Easter Sunday. This runner resumed midweek at Eagle Farm and went to the line as if it was just a trial. He looked to have plenty left at the end of the race and will be very hard to roll. Robbie Fradd is in the saddle.
Desert Man (3) keeps on running well without much luck and could show up.
Jardin Rouge (8) ran well a fortnight ago here and I think will be better for that attempt. Larry Cassidy remains aboard.
Moonshine Lady (10) backs up after a good effort last weekend despite finishing out of a place. She was taken on in front and could not finish off the race. She races well in front when she can dominate and set the race up without being pressured. Sadly, I think she will be under pressure again this week with some other runners that may go forward. If Adin Thompson can get her to settle, and the other runners not head her, she will be strong over that final 150 metres and may turn around the effort last weekend which I believe was still very good given the circumstances she found herself in.
Selections:
12 – Fasano 3 – Desert Man 8 – Jardin Rouge 10 – Moonshine Lady Rough chances – (5) All Important
_______________________________________________________________________ Jockey’s Challenge
Looks like a solid book of rides for the apprentices this weekend – Stephanie Thornton, Adin Thompson and Baylee Nothdurft. Jimmy Orman has some nice rides as well. It could end up being a draw – let’s go for Stephanie Thornton to get up in a narrow photo finish.
