WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 2 MAY, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Saturday, May 2, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 2 MAY 2020

We are back to Doomben this weekend with the track rated “SOFT” and the rail is out 2 metres for the entire course. The weather looks promising with warm conditions forecast – there may be a track upgrade across the program.

Looks like an average program with some short-priced favourites in the fields – maybe I can find some value in some races to knock off the favourites. Time to look at the program this weekend.

Race 1

A maiden race to start off the program. It is a very tough affair.

I am going for the Rob Heathcote trained Mary Jane (5) who is resuming from a spell. She was very impressive in a recent trial at Deagon. This is her first run for the new stable – I will be following her whatever happens this weekend.

Selections:

5 – Mary Jane
9 – Se Rende
15 – She’s Our Rippa
3 – Buddie Ollie
Rough chances – (10) Liza with a Zee (11) The Actuary

Race 2

Short and sweet here. The very short priced Tony Gollan runner - Starosa (2) - should win this race with apprentice Stephanie Thornton aboard. Thornton is set to join an elite group of apprentice jockeys who have outridden their metropolitan claim. I think this is the race where she will do it! She rode her 79th winners last weekend aboard the Gollan Racing trained Just Orm at the Sunshine Coast (tipped by WINNO)!

Selections:

2 – Starosa
3 – Uncomplicated
5 – Thrasher
4 – Sino Defeat

Race 3

Isabella’s Spring, I think, has been crying out for a mile. She is trained by Barry Lockwood and will be ridden by Corey Bayliss. Look for her to settle midfield and sprint over the top of them in the final 100 metres (well that is how I see it happening).

Adelase (8) is a Barry Baldwin trained filly. She has been working up in distance in her last few starts. She looks well placed in this maiden race.

Will it be a “Barry of a Race” – can the two Barry’s of Brisbane racing run first and second!

Selections:

11 – Isabella’s Spring
8 – Adelase
4 – Monster Of Power
10 – Iconista
Rough chance – (2) Apithanos (7) Valet

Race 4

A small field decimated by scratchings. Again, Stephanie Thornton is aboard a short priced one here for Chris Anderson Racing – Stylish Saga (4) – who is resuming here and has some solid form last preparation.

If you are looking for something to knock off the favourite jump onto the Will & Peter Hulbert trained Hail Manhattan (5) to be ridden by Nathan “Grubby” Day. He resumed a fortnight ago at the Sunshine Coast and won a Class 1 race impressively. He could be one with some ability that could test the favourite.

Selections:

4 – Stylish Saga
5 – Hail Manhattan
2 – Pure Pulse
1 – Perfect Aim

Race 5

Small field – even smaller with scratchings.

I think Boom Boom Epic (5) from the Anderson Racing stables, with Maddy Wishart aboard, could get out in her customary leading role and stroll along in front and dictate terms. With no pressure on she could get away with a slow tempo and kick strongly in the straight.

Magnufighter (2) is the favourite and will be stalking this leader throughout the race.

Selections:

5 – Boom Boom Epic
2 – Magnufighter
4 – Mongolian Wolf
7 – Lady Solerno

Race 6

Milk Man (4), trained in Sydney by Matthew Smith, has been sent north looking for a killing. He will be ridden by Jimmy Orman and is second up this weekend. He looks ideally placed in this class.

Seentoomany (7) has a dismal record here at Doomben. However, in saying that, she goes down in weight this weekend and has the Jake Bayliss on top. He will keep her mind on the job and at $12 she could be one to create an upset here.

Seat of Power (8) has an impressive race record with 4 wins from 8 starts. He is trained by Gary Duncan at the Sunshine Coast and has been heavily backed in the early markets – where there is smoke there maybe fire!

Selections:

4 – Milk Man
7 – Seentoomany
2 – Shalwa
8 – Seat of Power

Race 7

BREAKING NEWS – The Odyssey (1) cannot win this weekend!

Darren Wilson who part owns this runner will be happy to read this! Every time I declare him, I seem to get him beaten!

Now getting serious for a change – at the set weights he looks well placed against the opposition. He could be in for a solid Winter Carnival depending on what race/s they target with him over the coming 6 weeks.

I like the Gollan Racing Garibaldi (3) to win this weekend. His run first up was solid behind his stable mate Niedorp. Second up and over 1200 metres - maybe he can sit in behind and stalk The Odyssey (1) who will be out in front setting the tempo with Stephanie Thornton aboard.

Selections:

3 – Garibaldi
1 – The Odyssey
5 – The Move
4 – Go Deep

Race 8

The Kelly Schweida Racing trained Racecourse Road (4) looks well placed again this weekend – and Jimmy Orman to ride again. He won impressively lasts time out here a fortnight ago when leading and giving nothing else a chance. It could be a nice race to race double for the Schweida Racing team if The Odyssey (Race 7 – number 1) and this runner can put a win on the board. Maybe a good all up bet for the punters!

All Important (1) can lead as well – I am not sure whether they will take on Racecourse Road (4) or let him lead and take a sit. The tactics by Anthony Allen will be vital in this race.

Selections:

4– Racecourse Road
1 – All Important
8 – Jardin Rouge
7 – Maslow

Race 9

Looks like Heathcote Racing has a chance to bookend the program with their runner Starvirgo (8) to be ridden by Mark Du Plessis. He was solid running home late behind Racecourse Road (Race 8 – number 4) last start over 1200 metres. He steps up to 1350 metres this weekend and looks ideally placed.

Light Up The Room (9) will be ridden by Lani Fancourt for Tony Gollan’s stables. She is third up and normally goes well each time third up. She has drawn wide but do not despair as I think she will be able to sit off the early speed and hopefully get some breaks in the straight which will see her storming home late.

Magic Fox (11) is a genuine contender here in the last race. Corey Bayliss has been booked to ride for the Schweida Racing stable. They could finish off the day training the last three winners – now that would be some feat!

Selections:

8 – Starvirgo
9 – Light Up The Room
11 – Magic Fox
15 – Watch The Cat
Rough chances – (1)

Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW only)

2/4,8,11/4,5/2,5 - cost is $12 to $1

Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

2,4,7,8/1,3/1,4,8/8,9,11,15 - cost is $96 to $1

Value Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

2,4/1,3/1,4/8,9,11 - cost is $24 to $1

Treble (races 7 to 9)

1,3/1,4,8/8,9,11,15 - cost is $24 to $1

WINNO V FLEMO

WINNO smashed FLEMO in our tipping competition last weekend – on his home turf as well – NSW claim another victory! This weekend it looks an even program – I wonder whether he will resort to tipping the short-priced favourites to beat me? Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes of scratchings!
