WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, 11 JULY, 2020
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 9, 2020
SUNSHINE COAST RACES – SATURDAY 11 JULY 2020 This meeting at the Sunshine Coast featuring the WINX GUINEAS. The track has been posted as a SOFT for the meeting. The rail is in the true position for the entire course.
I’ve been based in Grafton for the Carnival since Tuesday – it has been a busy week, so It this is just a very brief preview this weekend
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
Race 1
The two-year-olds go around here.
I think the Kelly Schweida trained runner Fleet Dove was impressive on debut and can go on with it here. Baylee Nothdurft is riding. The filly is owned by the Nolan family.
Kisukano (1), ironically, is trained by Michael Nolan and is resuming after winning The Jewel last start on the Gold Coast.
Maybe it will be a Nolan quinella!
Selections:
9 – Fleet Dove 11 – Magic Delta 1 – Kisukano 4 – Mishani Fraudster Race 2
I suppose a topical tip this race with all the drama in Victoria this past week with COVID-19 is Socialising (8) from the Gollan Racing yards. Again, to be ridden by Baylee Nothdurft.
Keeping with the COVID theme let me tip Hi Fever (3) for the quinella.
We may as well cash in on the COVID dilemma!
Selections:
8 – Socialising 3 – Hi Fever 9 – No Refund 10 – Leroytheconquerer Race 3
Arthur In Charge (4) from the Mark Newnham stables made his debut at Doomben in Queensland last start. He worked home nicely enough to suggest the 1400 metres of this race will be right up his alley. Robbie Fradd should be able to navigate a pathway home here to ensure he greets the judge first.
Slow Hands (3) could like sprinting quickly first up – keep your eye on this one. Selections:
4 – Arthur In Charge 3 – Slow Hands 7 – Wrens Day 2 – Cloak Race 4
Potro Duro (7) resumes from a short spell after posting a hat trick of wins. This Edmonds Racing runner had a solid trial hit out in a trial that he dominated. Justin Huxtable rode him to his last start win and keeps the ride here.
Selections:
7 – Potro Duro 5 – Fabulonh 4 – Prince of Tie 6 – I Dream of Green Race 5
Chris Munce and Larry Cassidy combine here with Lucky Jackson (7) over a mile. He is third up this preparation and has an exceptional record on this track having gained all of his five career wins here! Looks well placed and I think at $6 is great value.
Selections:
7 – Lucky Jackson 9 – Mymming 6 – High Power 5 – Tatcee Race 6
Steven O’Dea has Roasted (9) in this race. Larry Cassidy has been booked to ride her. Maybe a nice double for Larry!
She is third up here and she has won previously third up. Great each way value as well at $12.
Bold Style (1), despite the large weight, should be kept safe in this race.
Selections:
9 – Roasted 2 – Howwonderfullifeis 1 – Bold Style 4 – Kalik Rough chance: (7) Say Haya Race 7 2020 WINX GUINEAS
The locally trained Star Of Michelin (1) put in a superb effort winning last start at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres. I think his style of racing dropping out and flashing home can always bring you undone but, with the set weigh conditions of this race, he looks well placed by his trainer Stuart Kendrick. This race is at Group 3 level and Dale Smith will, I think, be looking for his first Group winner since moving to Queensland.
Starla (11) is the new kid (girl) on the block with a slashing run to win last start at Doomben. He burst through a gap late and surged away under the urgings of Mark Du Plessis who has been replaced by Michael Cahill for this race. A big step up in grade – but the last start win was impressive.
Selections:
1 – Star Of Michelin 11 – Starla 7 – Knight Mariner 4 – Naval Strike Rough chances: (3)Wapiti (6) Samurai Race 8 2020 GLASSHOUSE Handicap
This is a solid field.
I think the race is between my top three selections.
Deep Image (1) has been racing in Group races for his past three starts and drops back here to Listed level. Seriously, despite the weight he looks a class above this lot. Robert Heathcote Racing will be looking for a feature race win with Stephanie Thornton in the saddle.
Soxagon (6), trained by Mark Currie, was good last start winning at Doomben over 1350 metres. I think he will be extremely competitive here – but I just always have reservations about him running out a solid or testing 1400 metres. Maybe “Boof” Currie and Michael Cahill can prove me wrong here!
Gollan Racing’s Krone (11) just keeps trying and is racing consistently without much luck. Bigger track, more room to move – surely, she can find her way home successfully. I have no concerns with the drop back in distance from a mile to the 1400 metres. I can see her being strong to the line.
Les Ross Racing trains River Racer (3). He always races well here and if we get any rain or the track becomes wet this is the runner to get on!
Selections:
1 – Deep Image 6 – Soxagon 11 – Krone 3 – River Racer Rough chance: (4) Special Missile Race 9
I have tipped one a $41 – One Stryke trained by Lauren Abbott. Despite drawing wide, he just goes well fresh and he always puts in. He is a genuine horse that just tries every time he goes around. Andrew Mallyon is in the saddle, I think, for the first time. Mate just ease him across from that crook barrier (barrier 15), let the speed go and then chime in late and win the race – SIMPLE as THAT!
Rock Beat (4) resumes as well for Tony and Maddy Sears Racing. He has not been defeated in three starts first up – that is some record! Jackson “McLovin” Murphy’s claim will assist him here.
Tony Gollan trains Tulio (16) who has won his past two starts over 900 metres – he is a speedster. He has not won over 1000 metres previously but with the speed in the race he should be flashing home late.
Musical Genius (13) resumes here for trainer Barry Lockwood. There has been some good support for this runner firming from $10 to $6 in the early markets. Keep safe.
Selections:
3 – One Stryke 4 – Rock Beat 16 – Tulio 13 – Musical Genius Rough chance: (12) Jardin Rouge _____________________________________________________________________ Jockey’s Challenge
Baylee Nothdurft, Larry Cassidy, and Michael Cahill all have some nice rides. Maybe a photo finish for Baylee to win.
