WINNO'S WINNERS: IPSWICH, 18 JULY, 2020

IPSWICH RACES – SATURDAY 18 JULY 2020
We are heading west to Ipswich this weekend with the track rated “SOFT”. The rail is in the true position. Some of the fields are small and have many chances in them – that’s competitive racing but it makes it difficult for punters. The feature races late in the program have drawn some solid fields.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
Race 1
A small field to start us off.
Ready For Magic (3) has been looking for the mile and gets his chance this weekend for trainer Robert Heathcote. Jim Byrne who seems to have great success on this Ipswich circuit has the ride.
Nicks (6), from the Stuart Kendrick yards, won at her home track last start over 1400 metres. She worked home very strongly and will be happy to race over the mile. Jake Bayliss retains the ride. Ironically, it is nearly 12 months to the day when he decided to base himself in Queensland indefinitely – I think he has made an impression in the racing ranks!
Selections:
3 – Ready For Magic 6 – Nicks 4 – Igor 5 – Mandeville Rocker
Race 2
A small competitive field.
Magione (6) is a Waller Racing runner to be ridden by Michael Cahill. He raced over 1840 metres last start, and I think may have not run it out. Back to a mile, where he can sit in behind the speed, he looks well placed.
Milk Man (1) won impressively last start at Doomben over a mile on a heavy track – not sure if the track condition enhanced the effort, but I think with the huge weight and Ipswich track I am happy to go against him this weekend.
Barefoot (8), from the Sears Racing team, could throw a spanner in the works and flash home late in this small field. Mark Du Plessis has the ride this weekend.
Selections:
6 – Mangione 1 – Milk Man 8 – Barefoot 3 – Top Prospect
Race 3
This is an even affair. The usual suspects are going around here again this weekend.
Kevin Kemp trains Fighting Teo (5) who has the blinkers coming off here. Brad Stewart has been booked to ride. The winkers go back on and I think the gear changes will see him post a win for the first time in 37 weeks. He is dropping back in class as well from consecutive Group 3 races back to handicap conditions.
Alward (2) raced generously last start. Despite being caught wide early he still worked home strongly. Luke Dittman has the ride here maintaining his relationship with Waller Racing out of the Gold Coast. This team has had some great results in recent months.
Selections:
5 – Fighting Teo 2 – Alward 6 – Sir Barnabus 7 – Tamarack
Race 4
The David Vandyke Racing pair look to have the race between them – Pinnacle Star (5) and Secret Spirit (6).
Secret Spirit (6) will be ridden by Ryan Maloney and is resuming from a 30-week spell. He looks well placed in this class and on his old from should account for this lot.
The stablemate Pinnacle Star (5) has placed in all three starts since resuming from a spell. Whilst he has raced consistently, I would think he has been disappointing in not posting a win yet this preparation.
Devils Marbles (10) is trained by Michael Nolan Racing - seems like Greer or Nick will be at Ipswich this weekend. He is second up and steps up to 1200 metres with Baylee Nothdurft to steer him around.
Selections:
6 – Secret Spirit 10 – Devils Marbles 2 – Langhro 5 – Pinnacle Star
Race 5
Edmonds Racing is represented here with Potro Duro (5) with Robbie Fradd to ride. He has had an 8-week break after posting three consecutive wins. He normally races well fresh and he has a win at Ipswich on his record.
I think that the short priced favourite Wren’s Day from the Godolphin Racing team was solid last start with a good second three weeks ago when defeated by Soxagon. I just think that he would be better placed over a longer distance.
The only other chance would be the top weight Elixir (1) trained by Les Kelly on the Gold Coast. He will be ridden by again by Justin Huxtable, who guided him to a win last start at Eagle Farm.
Selections:
5 – Potro Duro 10 – Wren’s Day 1 – Elixir 9 – Marmaris Rough chance – (2) Right or Wrong
Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend – a race over 1200 metres.
Chris Waller Racing has two nice chances here Voila (6), to be ridden by Luke Dittman, and Maddi Rocks (9) – who is the early market favourite - to be ridden by Ryan Maloney
I think the longer priced stable mate Voila (6) will get the chocolates at around $13. She was solid at Eagle Farm in her debut in Queensland – the only concern I have it the dropping back from 1400 metres to 1200 metres.
Maddi Rocks (9) was impressive first up when a good fourth to Euro Belle – she could have been unlucky when chopped out in the straight and being held up for an extended period. She may get caught up here as well on this tight track at Ipswich.
Hollaback Girl (2), from Tony Gollan Racing, is undefeated in all three starts here at Ipswich. I did hear during the week that this could be her last start prior to heading to the breeding barn – so, if that is the case, it would be great for Gollan and the connections to see her go out a winner. Jim Byrne the ‘Lord of the Ipswich track’ is in the saddle.
Selections:
6 – Voila 9 – Maddi Rocks 2 – Hollaback Girl 3 – Love Squirrels
Race 7
The time-honoured Eye Liner Stakes - who will reign supreme this year?
I think it could be a rough result for punters.
I like I Dream Of Green (14) from the Stuart Kendrick stables with Jake Bayliss to ride.
He drops in weight and goes up in class but, drawn handy in barrier 2, he can lead or let the speedsters go and sit in behind them and still finish off strongly. At $21 each way he is great value!
The 2020 Ramornie form from Grafton I think will turn out to be strong – I would suggest that you follow horses in the coming weeks that ran well in this race.
Now in saying that Boomsara (4), from Munce Racing, and Bandipur (2), trained by Kelly Purdy, fit that model.
Boomsara (4) resumed in that race – led a strong field and then was swamped in the final 70 metres and still finished a credible fourth beaten around 1.5 lengths. Brad Stewart takes the ride here and, drawn in barrier 5, I think he will lead this field. I just hope my top two selections do not go at each the other and soften each other up and fade late.
Deep Image (1) from Heathcote Racing has had no luck with the barrier draw again this weekend. He is way down in class from his latest Group 1 Stradbroke run. Another runner who will be sent forward and put pressure on in the running. He may just get caught wide here like he did in the Straddy – although Stephanie Thornton will get the best out of him.
Mr Bellagio (9) was scratched from the Ramornie and saved for this race by the astute Edmonds Racing team. Do not overlook this runner – he could be a winner at some massive odds.
Selections:
14 – I Dream Of Green 4 – Boomsara 1 – Deep Image 9 – Mr Bellagio Rough chances – (2) Bandipur
Race 8
Golan Racing trains two solid chances in this race – Vinco (6), to be ridden by Baylee Nothdurft, and Chico Milagro (11), to be partnered by Jim Byrne.
Vinco (6) won here two months ago and then won next start at Doomben over 1350 metres. Last start he went around at Doomben three weeks ago and got no luck in the straight. He went to the line untested and I think you can overlook the run. If he sees daylight here, he could make a mess of this field. There is $12 on offer about his chances.
Chico Milagro (11) is the stablemate who was held up as well last start in the G.H.Mumm Stakes a fortnight ago. He managed to still fight on late and, on that run, must be respected here.
Stuttering (1) was caught wide last start at Eagle Farm, but was solid finishing hard and fast late to just go down. Despite the large weight he will be extremely competitive here if he can get in and get some cover.
River Rocket (13) is trained by Les Ross Racing also went around in the G.H. Mumm last start. This runner has solid form here at this track and could show up at around $41 to put value in your exotic bets. Robbie Fradd to ride. I would expect that Corey McConnell will be strapping him this weekend – he probably will be looking over his shoulder in a few weeks with WINNO back on the track to take photos again!
Selections:
6 – Vinco 11 – Chico Milagro 13 – River Rocket 1 – Stuttering
Race 9
The last race of the day – the feature race – the Listed Gai Waterhouse. There are so many – well almost too many chances here.
Tony Gollan has launched an assault on this race with four starters here. They all have genuine chances as well.
Twitchy Frank (7) has the addition of blinkers this weekend and is second up where she has won previously. This is the second start for the new stable and I expect her to show some dramatic improvement. Ryan Maloney has been booked to ride this one.
The stable mate Solar Star (9) drops dramatically in weight here with Robbie Fradd aboard. I think that the weigh relief enhances her chances. Her races have been well spaced and she is undefeated at the track with 2 starts for 2 wins.
Amiticia (14) and Shalwa (6), both also from Gollan Racing, have authentic chances as well. We could see his stable train the trifecta in a feature race!
Jami Lady (4) from the Steven O’Dea Racing stables has posted two amazing wins after resuming from a spell. Her win last start at Eagle Farm was dominant putting a good quality field to the sword. Boris Thornton remains aboard and he is looking for a hat trick of wins on this mare.
River Racer (5) performed well last weekend in the Glasshouse on the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track. Taylor Marshall, who has been in good form in recent weeks, has the ride. He just is one of those runners that can pop up at big prices and at $17 this weekend he could cause an upset.
A big watch on the Peter & Paul Snowden Racing runner Satin Socks (16). She has had a 7 week freshen up and showed that she has taken some benefit from that let up when she trialled recently at Randwick and won it well. Fresh on the scene here, drawn well and Ronnie Stewart to ride – she could be the filly to kill punters Quaddies at about $41.
Selections:
7 – Twitchy Frank 9 – Solar Star 4 – Jami Lady 5 – River Racer Rough chances – (6) Shalwa (14) Amiticia (16) Satin Socks _____________________________________________________________________

I think the result will come from either Ryan Maloney, Luke Dittman or Jim Byrne (who had a birthday earlier in the week). Perhaps a slight edge to the birthday boy!.
