WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 22, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 20, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 22 AUGUST 2020

We are back at DOOMBEN this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. Weather looks awesome for the rest of the week – however, they are forecasting a windy and cold Saturday afternoon.

How good was WINNO last weekend a sensational effort with five winners on the program … and look at the prices of the winners in race 3 and race 6.

R2 - Kisukano $1.95
R3 – Love Struck $11
R6 – Acrobatic $26
R8 – Skate To Paris $3.30
R9 – Pizonie $5.50

Thanks for all the messages. It was a good day. And special thanks to my tipping buddy in our tipping competition, Josh Fleming, who gave WINNO a really good and much appreciated wrap while on air at Sky Channel!

With that weekend behind me, it will be hard to repeat that effort this week – anyway you got to have a go – never know what may happen!

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
____________________________________________________________________

Race 1

A small field over the mile here.

Desleigh Forster and Taylor Marshall combine with Eelloh (3) who was impressive last start here over 1350 metres. Her breeding would suggest that she will appreciate the mile. She is the early pre-post favourite and commands respect here.

Brian Smith. the wily trainer who seems capable of pulling a rabbit out of his hat, trains Moonan Me (4). He dropped this runner back from the 1400 metres (a fortnight ago the when he posted a solid victory at the Sunshine Coast with Justin Huxtable in the saddle) to 1200 metres. He was a short-priced favourite on that day and Justin retains the ride here – he could be the one to upset the favourite.

Bangers and Mayo (1), trained in Toowoomba by Sears Racing, has Alex Patis in the saddle. This runner won over the mile two starts ago at Ipswich and that form may hold up here with these other runners stepping up to the mile for the first time.

Selections:

3 – Eelloh
4 – Moonan Me
1 – Bangers and Mayo
5 – Statesville

Race 2

One of these distance races with the usual suspects going around.

Chris Waller and Luke Dittman combine here with Humbolt Current (6) who was defeated by Sir Barnabus (2) last start at Eagle Farm. Back to Doomben I think he can reverse the decision. The other factor is that he had one month off before that effort at Eagle Farm and I think just ran out of puff in the final 80 metres. He will have derived benefit from that run and with a slight weight advantage – that could be enough to see him back in the winner’s stalls.

Mangione (9) is the other stable runner to be ridden by Michael Cahill. This runner is backing up from last weekend over 1800 metres – just not too confident of him running out a strong 2000 metres.

Sir Barnabus (2), trained by Jason Edwards, was smashed late in the betting at Eagle Farm and got the chocolates. He was ridden to perfection by Jimmy Orman last start and he stays firmly in the saddle this weekend. He has raced well at Doomben and has won here previously. Just not too certain if he prefers Eagle Farm, but he will be extremely competitive again against a similar opposition.

Mushaireb (1) is trained by Richard and Michael Freedman and will be ridden by Ryan Wiggins this weekend again. He is also on the quick back up from last weekend where he only went down in the last stride to Momentum To Win.

Selections:

6 – Humbolt Current
2 – Sir Barnabus
9 – Mangione
3 – Mushaireb

Race 3

I see the thought police have not been able to alter the name of this Tony Gollan runner Chico Milagro (8). He won excitingly two weeks ago at Eagle Farm. He has been up a while – has he peaked this preparation? All reasonable questions that need answering. Jim Byrne navigates this runner again this weekend.

Astro Boy Toy (1) is trained by Edmonds Racing and Andrew Mallyon has the ride. He won first up at Eagle Farm at a midweek meeting – the run looked good on video. He has solid form over this distance and has run well previously at Doomben.

Easy Come (9) is another Sears Racing runner that has Luke Tarrant aboard. He rode a winner last weekend and appears to have come back after his recent suspension riding in wonderful form. This gelding won last start on his home track at Toowoomba and represents a solid each way chance in a field that could see an upset win. Around $9, I may have a sneaky wager on this one

Selections:

8 – Chico Milagro
1 – Astro Boy Toy
9 – Easy Come
11 – Montez

Race 4

Phantom Falcon (12), the ex-Hong Kong runner, put it all together last start at Eagle Farm with Michael Hellyer aboard. He is trained by Kacy Fogden and drops back slightly in distance here after a solid all the way victory last start at Eagle Farm. If he gets to the front and rolls along unchallenged, he could be awfully hard to knock off again. Hellyer is also in good form with a win last weekend aboard Love Struck.

Kris Lees Racing has Snowzone (3) looking for a win on a track he thrives on. A big gear change this weekend with the blinkers coming off. Jim Byrne will ride him. He will probably be the runner taking the trail behind Phantom Falcon (12) and it will all come down to that final 100 metres here for me!

Voila (1) is the early market favourite. It could be my lay of the day – so that means it will win and leave me with egg on my face! She won last start at a midweek meeting at the Sunshine Coast and that win may have given her some confidence to go on with it this weekend. It is the Waller Racing – Luke Dittman partnership that seems to be getting their fair share of winners in recent months but I just think she may find it tough at Doomben in these conditions.

Kevin Kemp trains Plumaro (9) won when resuming at the Sunshine Coast. She has a poor record second up but her chances can’t be dismissed. Robbie Fradd is in the saddle.

Selections:

12 – Phantom Falcon
3 – Snowzone
10 – Voila
9 – Plumaro

Race 5

The Chris Waller Racing stable, based on the Gold Coast, has a genuine chance here with Fairy Me Home (10) – Luke Dittman is in the saddle again. He rode him here a fortnight ago to a solid victory. He gets in well here in the conditions and at the weights. I think he will be hard to toss.

Missed The Alarm (13) – haven’t we all slept in during these cold winter mornings? This runner is trained by Steven O’Dea and is only a lightly raced mare who like longer trips. She goes from 1400m to 1600m here. I think that she raced well first up and, despite being second up here, she will enjoy the genuine tempo that is present in this race. She like to get back and settle and fly home late. Look for the black with lime green disc silks and Stephanie Thornton flashing down the outside late – massive odds as well $31.

Fastnet Cyclone (5) is a Stuart Kendrick runner who could be considered a track specialist having recorded 2 wins and 3 placings from five runs at Doomben – never out of the money at Doomben. Last start Jimmy Orman rated him well in front, however, he was caught late by a good one in Cloak to go under by about a length.

Selections:

10 – Fairy Me Home
13 – Missed The Alarm
5 – Fastnet Cyclone
4 – Amicitia

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie is over 1200 metres. A tough field.

Gollan Racing and Jim Byrne combine again with Ingear (9) who resumes here this weekend. With a solid recent trial under her belt she looks well placed by the stable.

Amiche (7) is a David Vandyke runner who has been a short-priced contender is her past three starts with two wins to her credit. She has a solid trial at her home track on the Sunshine Coast and she had plenty left to offer in the trial, so I expect her to be very forward this weekend – Ryan Maloney has the ride.

Lady Brahmos (11) is a Chris Munce runner and his stable apprentice Justin Huxtable is on board. Coming off a win at Ipswich a fortnight ago she could cause an upset.

Selections:

9 – Ingear
7 – Amiche
11 – Lady Brahmos
6 – Starla

Race 7

A large field over the 1050 metres sprint.

Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney combine here with Say Heya (13). She has been particularly good since a little let up and then back to racing posting a second and a win in the two efforts. Last start she worked home late and was arrogant going away in the way she went to the line to beat the opposition.

Watch out for the Kendrick Racing runner Jagged Edge (10) first up here with Dale Smith in the saddle. This runner always races well fresh – no formal trials but my Sunny Coast spies have told me he has been working well on the shivering winter tracks.

The Tenor (8) is a Kelly Schweida runner with Jackson “McLovin” Murphy in the saddle. This gelding goes better here on the Doomben track so my tip is to watch for a dramatic improved effort this weekend - $15 on offer means he could put some value in your Quaddies and exotics!

Stellar Power (6) with Alex Patis will bowl along in front and give some genuine speed in the race. Speed will be on with this runner engaged!

Princess Cordelia (15) is a Mitchell Beer runner who comes to Queensland for her first preparation here. She likes the speed on in her races and loves to get home late fast. Tegan Harrison will need to ride her for luck – but she could be a value runner and upset this lot first up.

Selections:

13 – Say Heya
10– Jagged Edge
8 – The Tenor
6 – Stellar Power
Rough chance – (15) Princess Cordelia

Race 8

I Dream of Green (14) will be ridden by Jake Bayliss at 54 kilograms. I am certain he will be out on the farm chasing the cattle this week to make weight for this Stuart Kendrick runner who raced last start in the Listed Eye Liner at Ipswich. His run was exceptional in that race. He drops back in class here and is back on the Doomben track where he thrives – I can see me holding the green $100 notes after this race! Con Searle make sure you have plenty of them in your bag!

Now I was torn here as my good mate Kevin Kemp was glowing after Mr Marbellouz (3) returned to racing with such an amazing effort first up after a 60-week spell and recovering from an injury. Maddy Wishart has the ride again this weekend and her 3-kilogram claim sees him get in well here. Cop the tip punters “Kempy” said to WINNO after that race – “we will be back in three weeks’ time – he will win!”. That is my dilemma. It would be an amazing training feat to get this runner back in the winners stalls this weekend.

Epic Girl (8), trained by Chris Anderson, resumes after a 22-week spell. She trialled well recently when narrowly defeated by Snitch. Tegan Harrison reunites with this mare – I think Tegz refers to this mare as “her girl”. These two combine with a notable record – 7 rides – 3 wins and 3 placings. This runner could cause havoc at $6.

Selections:

14 – I Dream of Green
3 – Mr Marbellouz
8 – Epic Girl
7 – Jardin Rouge
Rough chance – (1) Just Orm

Race 9

The last race of the day maybe WINNO will be suffering from wind burn if the weatherman gets it right this week!

This race is incredibly open and despite some short-priced runners the result too could leave a burning sensation in punters pockets!

Looks like Tony Gollan Racing may win this race with Run For Glory (3). If he salutes with Jim Byrne, we could see Gollan doing a victory lap around the parade ring as his stable have some very solid chances across this program.

This runner has won his past two starts and comes to town looking for his first Saturday metro win. In his past two starts he has been well supported and looks like he will start favourite here. This could end a massive day for the Gollan/Byrne combination.

Getyourgreyon (10) is trained on the Gold Coast by Michael Costa and will be ridden by Jimmy Orman. This runner resumed on a heavy track and was narrowly defeated by Snowzone (race 4 – number 3). Since that effort he went back to his home track and posted a win on a heavy track a fortnight ago.

It will be an interesting battle with Jimmy Byrne and Jimmy Orman going toe to toe – blow for blow – down the straight (well that is WINNO’s vision). I wonder what words Josh Fleming will come out with if these two peel off and stage a battle in the final stages.

Golly Hut (6) represents some serious value at $15. Trained by Malcolm Reynolds and to be ridden by Ryan Maloney, this runner, I believe, has been looking for a firmer track and should get those conditions this weekend.

Selections:

3 – Run For Glory
10– Getyourgreyon
6 – Golly Hutt
8 – Suilven
