WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, AUGUST 29, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 27, 2020

We are back at EAGLE FARM this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 5.5metres for the entire circuit. Weather looks awesome for the rest of the week – however, they are forecasting a windy and cold weekend mornings. I return to the scene of the crime a fortnight ago where I jagged five winners on the program. Let us hope for some luck again this weekend.

You know that WINNO loves his exotics. TAB has taken over and we have no Treble in Queensland anymore! Yes – I know it took me a few weeks to uncover this! It is an outrage – the treble is gone! I am thinking about getting a petition together to bring it back! If they are not going to give us our Treble back surely, we can get a BIG 6 bet like they have in NSW?

I see that there has been more comment about jockeys and betting in the media. I am not too certain why they are not allowed to have a bet in a race they are not riding or better still a meeting that they are not participating in. Australia is a place where we like a gamble! I understand the restrictions but seriously? This will split the punters I am sure!

Finally, a shout out to Nick Hahn who has entered the horse training ranks. He had his first starter last Saturday night at Toowoomba and the horse finished a nice fourth with Alex Patis in the saddle. I am certain that he has gained a lot of experience from mentors over the years and will be successful as he gets more horses in the stable.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
___________________________________________________________________

Race 1

A small field over 1000 metres.

Le Palmier (6) from Gollan Racing has an impeccable second up record. I think that this race is his to lose. Jim Byrne rode well last weekend without much luck – let us hope for a change of luck here.

Mittere (3) from the Danny Bougoure yards won here last start at a midweek meeting. The fact that the horse has won here on the track is a huge plus. Robbie Fradd retains the ride.

Highland Son (8) is from Kendrick Racing. This lightly raced gelding resumes here and did trial well at his home track on Tuesday this week – he could be one to watch at odds if he takes his place in the field.

Fisticuffs (1) trained by Edmonds Racing – resumes here and could show up.

Selections:

6 – Le Palmier
3 – Mittere
8 – Highland Son
1 – Fisticuffs

Race 2

A No Metro Win race over the mile. These are normally a lottery.

Look is it not a race I can even get interested in. David Vandyke, who trained a winning double last weekend and had another winner on Wednesday, has a nice mare going around here – One For Betty (3). She has won her past two starts. Maybe with Stephanie Thornton aboard she will get the mile and win at short odds to complete the hat trick.

Take your choice for the rest of them. Maybe it could be a partner's quinella – Stephanie Thornton and her partner Ben Thompson. He rides No Refund (8) for the Hulbert Racing stables.

Would love to be a fly on the wall if he gets up and beats her in the final stride – bragging rights for sure!

Selections:

3 – One For Betty
1 – Barachiel
7 – Jochberg
8 – No Refund

Race 3

An open race here.

At set weights it is hard to go past Kisukano (9) from the Michael Nolan Racing team. Let us be honest here she was SENSATIONAL in her return to the winner’s stall here a fortnight ago. Clearly the stable has elected to stay in Queensland and not travel to NSW with all the drama with COVID-19. Maybe with another bold effort here this weekend, they may change their minds and chase the big prizemoney and black type races in Sydney.

I did get the chocolates with Acrobatic (2) last start at $31 when they put the tongue tie on him. This Snitzel gelding will test the favourite here on his run last start – do not underestimate this runner! This weekend Ryan Maloney takes the ride with Mark Du Plessis continuing his association with the short-priced favourite Kisukano (9).

Now I must let you in on some mail here with the Scott Morrisey runner – Safework (8) who was a solid effort behind Acrobatic (8) last start here. There was some smart money in the ring to say he would run a race and he certainly did. Morrisey was very buoyant after the race and said that this Spirit of Boom gelding was set for the Magic Millions, but just needed to mature a little.

He has come back in fine fettle and despite being a maiden he could ruffle the feathers of these more favoured runners. He races well on top of ground – no good on wet tracks. He gets a firm surface here again this weekend - $26 on offer in some markets – and Scott Morrisey has trained a winner in all of the past three Saturday meetings!

Selections:

9 – Kisukano
2 – Acrobatic
8 – Safework
5 – Super Effort

Race 4

Another tough race – they do not get any easier.

The weights are very compressed here, so I think the top weight All Important (1) gets in well with Maddy Wishart’s 3-kilogram claim. He has not won at Eagle Farm but, second up, he has won 3 times from 5 efforts – that will do me. He will lead this lot easy. If he gets an easy time in front – and I really cannot see anything taking him on – that is when he races best. Maddy could just steal the race.

Ziemba (7) from Heathcote Racing resumes here this weekend with Stephanie Thornton aboard. He was solid behind his high profile stable mate Rothfire in a trial a few weeks ago. That trial was particularly good and a nice lead into this race. This gelding races well fresh and at the Eagle Farm track.

Chris Waller has Luke Dittman on Endless River (4) who posted a win on his home track first up three weeks ago. He is only lightly raced but has a good win strike rate with 3 wins from 7 starts.

Smooth Move (11) is trained by Chris Munce and will be ridden by the stable apprentice Justin Huxtable. I note the blinkers come off this weekend – a month between runs and he does like this track. This runner is $8 and represents great each way value.

Selections:

1 – All Important
7 – Ziemba
4 – Endless River
11 – Smooth Move
Rough chance – (14) Woman of Gold

Race 5

This is a nice race over 1400 metres.

Chris Munce’s charge Skate To Paris (3) just keeps going from strength to strength winning her last two starts here. She drops back from a mile to 1400 metres. That was my only concern, but with Supergiant (7) engaged, the race will be run at a genuine tempo. I think that will permit this mare to sit off them and storm home late again with Larry Cassidy in the saddle.

Now we spoke about Supergiant (7) so I should say more about the likely tear away leader trained by Michael Costa and will be ridden by Allan Chau who rode him to victory in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic over the abbreviated Winter Carnival. He trialled well at the Gold Coast 3 weeks ago – a strong effort. The speed in the race may mean that some late finishes will be storming home late.

Gollan Racing has taken over the training of Smartedge (4). This runner likes firm tracks and gets those conditions this weekend. He was impressive in a recent trial with Jim Byrne in the saddle. Jim retains the ride here and looks a serious contender in this field.

Junction (6) was a surprise winning first up for Mark Currie with Luke Tarrant in the saddle. Again, with the speed on here this gelding poses a serious threat again. There have been some potting this runner as they think that the step up in distance will be a drama. I think the distance is great and wait until he gets over a mile!

Selections:

3 – Skate To Paris
4 – Smartedge
6 – Junction
7 – Supergiant

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie is over 2200 metres. A tough field – with some new suspects trying to win a race in town!

Let’s start at the top – Momentum To Win (1) is trained by Bryan and Daniel Guy on the Gold Coast. This runner won last start - unexpectedly for punters but not for Guy Racing who thought he was a genuine chance at around $21! He steps up in distance this weekend and the extra distance will suit. A change of jockey here – Robbie Fradd is aboard.

Jim Byrne has swapped to ride Joymaker (6) from the Kelly Schweida Racing stable who he won on here a fortnight ago over 2112 metres. A slight step up in grade and in distance should not be a trouble.

Chris Waller Racing has two runners – He Runs Away (7) and Spirit (9). Both have each way chances at good odds.

Even Flash Aah (8) from the Mitchell Fry yards to be ridden by Jason Taylor could show up after a good win last start at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres.

Selections:

6 – Joymaker
7 – He Runs Away
11 – Continuation
9 – Spirit
Rough chance – (1) Momentum To Win and (8) Flash Aah.

Race 7

A large field over the 1400 metres. Really not sure what to say or do here!

A big welcome back to Matthew McGillivray who rides Factory Warrior (9) for Mark Currie. This runner is second up and normally races handy – I think he could give Matty a rough chance to post a win here at huge odds!

Lovestruck (10) was solid after a slight let up first up here winning for Scott Morrisey and Michael Hellyer. They combine again in a race that is again winnable for the gelding. Back to back wins on a Saturday – a big chance! There will not be $15 on offer this weekend like last start – he will be a lot shorter, but I think can win again!

Persuader (1) gets her chance to get back in the winner’s stall this weekend. She has been struggling in recent starts to get some luck. With the conditions of the race and Justin Huxtable’s claim for this runner – she has the best possible chance to win.

Ginger Rock (14) is looking for a hat trick of wins for Danny Bougoure. Robbie Fradd remains aboard the mare.

Selections:

10 – Lovestruck
1– Persuader
14 – Ginger Rock
9 – Factory Warrior

Race 8

A Class 6 sprint over 1200 metres. The race has been decimated with some early scratchings.

We have a short-priced runner here from the Vandyke stables at the Sunshine Coast – Desert Lord (10). Can the stable post a winning double this week like they did last weekend? Ryan Maloney combines with Vandyke here with this runner. I will not be loading up at $1.80 – in fact, it is my lay of the day!

I am punting on the fresh record and the liking for the track for the Robert Heathcote Racing runner – Guntantes (6). His trial at Doomben for mine was great – the pink and black check silks will be going past the post first here for mine with Jim Byrne getting this runner home.

I Dream of Green (2) – just forget the run last weekend. He was held up and had no luck in the straight and went to the line not really tested. Hopefully on the bigger track this weekend Justin Huxtable will get him wide and let him fly home late.

Desleigh Forster is having a great run of late although Catesby (3) was just pipped on the post last start – maybe a change of luck this weekend for this runner.

Selections:

6 – Guntantes
2 – I Dream of Green
10 – Desert Lord
3 – Catesby
Rough chance – (4) Defence Missile

Race 9

The last race of the day over 1825 metres – do they want us to back a winner today? Let us all hope we are all in front coming into this race.

The Kingdom (5) loves this track and was desperately unlucky last start in the Coffs Harbour Cup. He got back in the field and was brought unstuck in the short straight when he was forced wide. He is back at Eagle Farm with the extra distance and on a track where he has five wins out of seven starts - $6 a great bet. Andrew Mallyon is in the saddle again. He will be flying home wide late!

Kris Lees Racing has Aliferous (9) in the race coming off some poor heavy bog tracks in Sydney. I think on the firm surface you may see a dramatic form reversal. Matthew McGillivray takes the mount – can he ride a race to race double on his first day back after a stint on sidelines after suffering an injury?

Happy Go Plucky (13) is the first emergency and his trained by John Gilmore. This runner is fourth up after a small break. I think that he gets back to a trip that suits him.

Right Or Wrong (7) rounds out the selections with no real confidence.

Chris Waller Racing trains the three runners at the top of the weights. All are resuming after a short spell and freshen up – with some good tempo in the race they could get on the back of something late and work into the race late.

Selections:

8 – The Kingdom
9– Aliferous
13 – Happy Go Plucky
7 – Right or Wrong
