WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 5, 2020
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, September 3, 2020
We are back at DOOMBEN this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 2 metres for the entire circuit. Weather looks awesome for the rest of the week.
Let us start with the first lady of the turf Gai Waterhouse who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday. She remains a formidable force in the training ranks and I am certain that she will have a team ready to go for the upcoming Sydney and Melbourne Carnivals.
And then going to the youngsters, I see that my QLD mate, hopefully with no wannabe moustache, Sheriden “Shaz” Tomlinson makes his debut this weekend at Doomben – his first Saturday meeting. I am certain there will be a large contingent of family and friends present to cheer him on if he can land a winner on the day.
After my whinge last week about the axing of the TREBLE – the TAB has brought it back earlier this week - can you believe it?
Now we just need them to lift the BIG 6 restriction and introduce that to the Queensland punters. Maybe it is just another example of the “border is closed” and we cannot get anything new into the State.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day ____________________________________________________________________
Race 1
A small field over 1200 metres to start the day. I am going from the fifth runner backwards here.
I like the David Vandyke runner Golden Mean (5), with Ryan Maloney in the saddle, to get the chocolates in the first race. She will settle midfield and get a nice trail into the race with the speed that will be generated by The Great Boombino (4).
Now let us talk about The Great Boombino (4) who ran a mighty race first up and was run down late. I think it could be the same result this weekend. The Goves family have a share in this runner. There is no doubt they will be here screaming and yelling and then abusing me that I did not tip her to win over the fence. Lucky for me COVID-19 restrictions keeps them away from me – that includes my little cadet reporter James Goves.
A serious watch on the market on the John Smerdon trained Island Daze (3) who makes her debut here in Queensland for the new stable – if the money comes for this runner get on! They love to back their judgement.
Selections:
5 – Golden Mean 4 – The Great Boombino 3 – Island Daze 2 – No Doubt Acracker
Race 2
The three-year-old runners step out here over a mile.
Trust In Aloha (9) comes off a solid effort over the mile here a fortnight ago when Eelloh won the race. She finished off the race well late and I think, as she is the only runner that has seen the mile, this could hold her in good place for this assignment. Jake Bayliss retains that ride.
Kelly Schweida Racing has two runners – Magic Conqueror (1) and Petunia (5).
Magic Conqueror (1) won last start at the Gold Coast over 1400 metres. This weekend he will be ridden by Brad Stewart. The way he finished off the race at the Coast he will thrive at the mile. I also note that his time was better than the pre post favourite Miss Cabaret (4) who won on the same day over the same distance.
Miss Cabaret (4) had trialled well before being heavily supported and winning on debut over 1400 metres. Trained by Michael Costa and to be ridden again by Jag Guthmann- Chester I think that she may just struggle here fronting up for a city grade race in just her second start. Now in saying that the stable has a big opinion of this runner and she has been well supported since the markets opened.
Selections:
9 – Trust In Aloha 1 – Magic Conqueror 4 – Miss Cabaret 5 – Petunia
Race 3
The small fields continue with only nine runners for this race.
Chris Waller Racing on the Gold Coast has a few runners – Maddi Rocks (7) and Starla (8).
Maddi Rocks (7) won seven weeks ago at Ipswich and resumes after a short let up. She seems to run well fresh and is perfectly drawn with Ryan Maloney aboard. Starla (8) will be ridden by Luke Dittman and will be competitive as well.
The Edmonds Racing trained Astro Boy Toy (1) will be the leader in this field. Last start he ran into a good one Chauffeur. He looks well placed here this weekend with Andrew Mallyon in the saddle – he is fit and rock hard and my just prove too hard to run down.
Selections:
7 – Maddi Rocks 1 – Astro Boy Toy 8 – Starla 9 – Lady Brahmos
Race 4
Only ten runners here – with some dual acceptors – it could end up seeing the field drastically slashed come post time.
Tony Gollan trains Run For Glory (4) and Jim Byrne remains aboard. These two have been in wonderful form since the season commenced. Run For Glory (4) has posted three wins in a row now. Each time he has been set a new challenge by Gollan and he has come through – this weekend he looks well placed again.
See Me Exceed (5) is trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent. She was smashed in the betting and won on her Queensland debut at the Gold Coast – on that performance she rates well here. Dale Smith takes the ride.
I must mention the Harold Norman trained Shauquin (2) to be ridden by Rikki Palmer first up here this weekend. This runner is a seven-year-old – despite that his recent trial win at the Gold Coast was strong. He has drawn well in barrier 1 and always races well fresh. Maybe he is the runner on the scene who cause a major upset at massive odds.
Selections:
4 – Run For Glory 5 – See Me Exceed 2 – Shauquin 3 – Last Chance
Race 5
This is a nice race over 1600 metres – but only eight runners.
David Vandyke’s Cloak (3) will lead this lot and set the tempo. A race of tactics really. Will they let him get away with cheap sectionals and dominate as he normally does or will something put some pressure on. One thing is for sure Ryan Maloney will take control of the race early.
Right or Wrong (1), trained by Lindsay Gough, will be ridden by Sheriden Tomlinson who will claim his full three kilograms which gets this runner nicely into the race. Can he ride his first Saturday metro winner? Time will tell but this runner is a serious contender here in this race. With some luck he could be first past the post!
Robert Heathcote Racing has Alpine Dancer (4) fourth up this preparation. This gelding could well be finishing off strongly too for them and with the small field he will get his crack late at the leader in the straight. Dale Smith is in the saddle.
Selections:
3 – Cloak 1 – Right or Wrong 4 – Alpine Dancer 6 – Napoleon Solo
Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend over 1200 metres and yet another miniature field.
Malahide (6) trialled well at the Gold Coast on Tuesday – winning the trial on solid form. Matthew McGillivray rode her in the trial and remains in the saddle on Saturday for her return to racing after a 34-week spell. She has won three out of four times first up so must be respected.
Star Reflection (2) put in a solid effort first up five weeks ago now. This weekend she is second up, and she has a superb record. She gets conditions to suit – a small field and a solid pace and should be in the finish. Andrew Mallyon takes the ride this weekend.
Epic Girl (4) - I am not sure what to do here. She is best ridden in the lead and let coast along unchallenged. Maybe with Tegan Harrison in the saddle they may choose to send her to the front and see how things play out.
Selections:
6 – Malahide 2 – Star Reflection 4 – Epic Girl 8 – Moonshine Lady
Race 7
Another race over the mile here.
Getyourgreyon (8) was a certainty beaten last start out here. He was heavily supported late and had no luck in the running. Bumped at the start and then could not get a crack at them in the straight. This weekend in the smaller field I expect that Jag Guthmann-Chester will ensure he gets out wide and gives him a clear run.
Bering Sea (4) tried hard last start and could not run down the leader late over a mile. He has never won at Doomben and never won here over the mile. I think the series of placings will continue here.
Chris Waller Racing trains Prospectus (10) with Ronnie Stewart to ride. This gelding won last start here over a mile at a midweek meeting. He is nicely in with the conditions of the race and it would only take a run like he put in last start to see him win this.
Jarhead (12), from the Les Kelly yards, could be one at massive odds to show up.
Selections:
8 – Getyourgreyon 10 – Prospectus 4 – Bering Sea 5 – Reiby The Great Rough chance – (12) Jarhead
Race 8
A sprint race here over 1050 metres.
Sheriden Tomlinson rides Mishani Miss (2) for his boss Les Ross here. She is dropping back in distance here, but she did run a solid second to Kisukano last start. She is taking her first look at Doomben. I think that, as there is some speed in the race, she needs to sit in behind the leaders and get some space in the straight and BOOM – hopefully, a winner!
Steven O’Dea Racing has Shooting For Gold (6) lining up for his second career start after a striking debut at a midweek meeting here two weeks ago. He was sent out at prohibitive odds and slayed the opposition. There has been some serious support for this runner since the markets have opened – they must be confident that he can repeat the dose this weekend.
Spirit One (2) is resuming from a 17-week spell for the Sears Racing team. Alex Patis will ride. I think that she could be a rough chance despite the wide barrier draw – barrier 13.
Salbis (10) is trained on the Sunshine Coast by Stuart Kendrick. She won at her second career start on her home track and ran some good sectionals – maybe she can upset to the more favoured runners.
Selections:
3 – Mishani Miss 6 – Shooting For Gold 10 – Salbris 2 – Spirit One Rough chance – (15) Strike
Race 9
The last race of the day is over 1200 metres.
Gollan Racing finishes off the day with a solid chance in Royal Hale (6) who won last start at the Sunshine Coast. He is only lightly raced and is third up this preparation and looks ideally placed by the stable.
Snowzone (2) motored home late when a good second last start to a tearaway leader. A nice claim for apprentice Justin Huxtable certainly keeps this gelding under notice.
Secret Spirit (7), now trained now by Courtney Tyrell, won a recent trial – this runner could be a genuine knock out chance in the last at around $12. Luke Tarrant is in the saddle.
Fort Wayne (11) makes his debut here for his new trainer after a 23-week spell. He has moved to the Sunshine Coast and is now trained by Kendrick Racing and Matthew McGillivray takes the ride for his Queensland debut.
This last race is open outside of the top two chances.
Selections:
6 – Royal Hale 2– Snowzone 7 – Secret Spirit 11 – Fort Wayne ____________________________________________________________________
