WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 24, 2020
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 23, 2020
DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2020
This weekend we head back to DOOMBEN with the track rated “SOFT” and the rail out 4 metres for the entire circuit and a HUGE 10 race program.
So, what is the feature event this weekend? The AFL – Geelong to win for me! The NRL – Storm to win for me … OR …. The 100th running of the W.S.Cox Plate. My Cox Plate boxed trifecta is 1,9,11,12,13
So you will have guessed that I will say the Cox Plate is the biggest feature event this weekend to be closely followed by the announcement on Monday of the NSW State of Origin team to flog the Queensland Morons … sorry Maroons in 2020!
I must show respect this week – last weekend Josh Fleming tipped 5 winners at Doomben!
As massive effort from FLEMO – well done mate! ______________________________________________________________________
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
Race 1
A small field to start the day.
Gollan Racing has Niedorp (6) resuming from a twenty-week spell. She had an impressive recent win in a barrier trial, Baylee Nothdurft is aboard and Tony Gollan trained after a massive four winners here last weekend. Can she be beaten? I think not!
As for the rest take your pick!
Maybe a sly rough chance for the topweight Exactamente (1) from Gillian Heinrich on the Gold Coast.
I suppose if I do not give Billy Healey a mention, I will get a nasty SMS or message at some stage! His mare Gin ‘N’ Bitters (5) will strip fitter for her first up effort – Robbie Fradd to ride.
Selections:
6 – Niedorp 1 – Exactemente 2 – Genzai The Wolf 8 – Gin ‘N’ Bitters
Race 2
Toby and Trent Edmonds – the winners of the 2020 Wayne Wilson Medal could quinella the race here with their two runners – Jetty (4) and Xerri (5).
Jetty (4) is resuming with Jim Byrne aboard and has trialled strongly on the Gold Coast in preparation for the first up assignment.
The stablemate Xerri (5) has been racing consistently without much luck. He goes down on the weights this weekend and that could assist him here.
Rollinwiththeflow (2) won last start at 1000 metres at Eagle Farm for trainer Tom Button. I think that he struggles at 1200 metres however, if they leave him alone in front and Jimmy Orman can get away with some cheap sectionals, he will be extremely hard to get past in the straight.
Kavak (1) is second up after a solid win at the Sunshine Coast – trained by Chris Munce this gelding has always shown some ability and could be the surprise packet of the race.
Selections:
4 – Jetty 5 – Xerri 2 – Rollinwiththeflow 1 – Kavak
Race 3
A Class 6 over 1615 metres here.
Ziemba (2) is a Robert Heathcote Racing runner with Stephanie Thornton aboard. He is fourth up this weekend and is ready to get into the winner’s stalls again. He has been well supported in the early markets and can be expected to run well.
Kedah (6) is probably best suited over a mile – look for an improved performance this weekend.
One For Betty (7) will go well – trained by David Vandyke.
Selections:
2 – Ziemba 6 – Kedah 3 – Love Struck 7 – One For Betty
Race 4
The two-year-old runners are in action here.
Some of the more fancied runners have drawn wide so that may be a drama as these youngsters usually need the rail to help them find their way home.
I like the NSW invader Ghostwriter (5) trained by Annabel Neasham – the new kid on the block in Sydney training. Let me tell you about her – she has a wonderful pedigree. She arrived in Australia from England four years ago and started work with Gai Waterhouse before joining the Ciaron Maher Racing team in Sydney. She had her first starter in her own right at Scone in August, and it won!
This I Am Invincible colt has been trialling strongly with two wins under his belt with James McDonald in the saddle both times. The times have been impressive as well. The stable has put Jim Byrne on top for the debut – he will give it every chance.
Alert and Ready (7) is trained by Kevin Kemp. This is the one that dropped the rider on debut at Toowoomba. Then, when she came to town a fortnight ago, she had no luck. Squeezed at the start, then held up on entering the straight – if she gets any luck this weekend, she will be hard to hold out. Andrew Mallyon stays on top here. Let’s hope she stays out of trouble this weekend and gets the chocolates for Kempy!
Shaluna (9) another Robert Heathcote runner was sent out as a heavily backed favourite on debut when finishing fourth. She raced well enough and probably would have benefited from that run.
Our Hot Friend (1), trained by Les Ross Racing, ran well on debut flashing home late. He has winkers on this start, however, has drawn wide on the track. Will need some luck from out there, but last start did settle towards the rear of the field before making a sustained surge late.
Selections:
5 – Ghostwriter 7 – Alert and Ready 9 – Shaluna 1 – Our Hot Friend
Race 5
An open affair this over 2020 metres.
Firstly, let WINNO congratulate the new team in Brisbane racing – Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted who formed a new training partnership.
I think what better way to celebrate the new combination but to train a winner on Saturday at Doomben with Ocean Treaty (11) here to be ridden by Ben Thompson. This mare has won her past three starts – she looks progressive and could show them up here.
Takeittothelimit (4) is a Sears Racing runner – she won last start at Ipswich. Georgina Cartwright, who is in the saddle, is riding in wonderful form landing a winning treble last weekend – she could continue here with that winning form.
Blacklog (7) at around $26 could cause a major upset here this weekend – keep it safe.
Selections:
11 – Ocean Treaty 4 – Takeittothelimit 7 – Blacklog 9 – Windermere
Race 6
Another three-year-old race – this time over 1200 metres.
The Robert Heathcote Racing runners look well placed here.
Dusty Tycoon (1) resumes and will lead here, and Dale Smith stays in the saddle. She won her latest trial by 5.5 lengths – she looks forward enough to make it hard for the rest of them to get past her this weekend.
Minjee (2) the stablemate will be suited by the hot speed – she will be storming home late out wide with Stephanie Thornton aboard.
Gollan Racing will be looking for another winner with Starosa (3). Baylee Nothdurft is up this weekend. She is resuming as well, and her trial looks average on paper, after reviewing the video she had plenty in reserve in a recent trial.
The stablemate is Glitter Strip (9) who will be partnered by Ben Thompson. She looked like she needed the run first up – she could well take some improvement from that run and upset the more fancied runners here at a good odds - $7.
Better Get Set (7) could land another winner for the O’Dea/Hoysted partnership coming off a great win first up at the Sunshine Coast last start.
Selections:
1 – Dusty Tycoon 3 – Starosa 9 – Glitter Strip 7 – Better Get Set Rough chance – (2) Minjee
Race 7
With ten races – this is the first leg of the Quaddie.
There is some value here and the some of the top weights will have to concede some weight to the ones down the bottom of the field.
Unguarded (14) from Munce Racing bolted in last start here. She goes up in class, however, given the same circumstances and a clear run at them late, she could put another win on the board. Larry Cassidy remains aboard this weekend.
Impasse (4) had not much luck across the road at Eagle Farm last start. This weekend he is back on a track where he goes well. Mark Du Plessis replaces Robbie Fradd this weekend. Third up here look for an improvement.
All Important (1) led them here last start and got run down in the shadow of the post by Beaufort Park (2). They both go up in the weights, but Beaufort Park meets him better at the weights here.
The stablemate from the Gollan Racing team is Tokoriki Lad (6) – he flashed home strongly when resuming, but has a poor second up record.
Beaufort Park (2) was unlucky in the straight as well – got an obstructed run in the straight and still got the job done. Travis Wolfgram rides him again looking to post four wins in a row aboard this runner.
Selections:
14 – Unguarded 4 – Impasse 2 – Beaufort Park 1 – All Important Rough chance – (6) Tokoriki Lad
Race 8
A sprint race here. There is some good speed in the race – I expect a swooper to win this.
Jami Lady (2) resumes here for the Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted new training partnership. She is resuming from a 14 week spell – a very impressive barrier trial at Deagon a few weeks ago leads her nicely into the race. The claim for Justin Huxtable is a bonus. He is riding very well of late.
Pizonie (9) was caught wide last start at Eagle Farm in a race where I think you can throw the form out of the window as it was run very oddly. The other factor is he has never performed well third up in his career. This weekend he is fourth up and Baylee Nothdurft takes over. I expect a massive improvement here this weekend – good odds on offer as well - $10.
Spaceboy (12) is the NSW invader sent north from the Gary Portelli yards and Stephanie Thornton will ride. Look, the two trials prior to coming to Queensland were solid. I cannot find a spot for this one in my top two BUT if the rain comes and the track deteriorates this runner will come into serious calculations. So, keep your eye on the finicky South Queensland weather that usually rolls in late in the afternoons this time of the year.
Hard Empire (1) has had a stable change and is now trained by Toby & Trent Edmonds. He has some good form in Listed and Group races in South Australia – and has had two very impressive trials on the Gold Coast leading into this debut in Queensland. The stable has removed the winkers and put on blinkers for the first time.
There are some other genuine chances here as well if you wish to play wide – Soxagon (3) trained by Mark Currie and Gypsy Toff trained by Tom Button both are contenders. Selections:
2 – Jami Lady 9 – Pizonie 12 – Spaceboy 1 – Hard Empire Rough chances – (3) Soxagon and (11) Gypsy Toff
Race 9
The David Vandyke runner Desert Lord (5) was sent out a raging favourite last start. He ran home strong late and, on that run, you would expect him to take a ton of beating here this. Just one drama - he is third up and he has a poor record third up. Stephanie Thornton takes the ride here.
Emerald Kingdom (10) from Robert Heathcote Racing is second up. This runner was super just getting run down late first up across the road. He has a superb winning strike rate both at Doomben and second up. If jockey Robbie Fradd can get him in close with some cover, he will be right in the finish.
Red Chase (7) is trained by Desleigh Foster. This runner was runner up in the Weetwood and the form seem to have held up well. His run last start here over 1200 metres would suggest that he is now looking for the 1350 metres. Taylor Marshall rides this one – he has a great association with this gelding.
Junction (11) is trained in Toowoomba by Mark Currie. He always puts in a decent effort and could cause an upset here – Matthew McGillivray takes the ride.
Selections:
5 – Desert Lord 10 – Emerald Kingdom 7 – Red Chase 11 – Junction Rough chance – (12) Grey Missile
Race 10
The last race – after a massive day of ten races.
Then, race home – grab some dinner and settle in to watch the AFL Grand Final.
Thine Is The Power (7) may get some heavenly help on this massive day and get us home in the last race.
He is an Edmonds Racing runner and I just think, with two solid trials under his belt and racing at Doomben where Trent & Toby seem to have more luck, he will be hard to toss in the last race. Andrew Mallyon is in the saddle.
Widespread (12) was impressive when he resumed for his new stable at the Sunshine Coast – now trained by Chris Munce. The win was strong and he would have taken an enormous amount of improvement out of that run – Justin Huxtable rides this one.
I should say right about now – OH NO! Well Oh Five Glory (13) is going around for her third week in a row for Peter & Will Hulbert and stable jockey Adin Thompson. The irony here is that the last two weekends they have been knocked off by Justin Huxtable peeling of their back late and winning the races! That is why I am saying “OH NO” – will lightning strike three times in a row this weekend! I reckon after the past two weeks young Adin had wished he had cut him free when they were sharing some alone time out in the ocean recently.
Snowzone (2) is a Kris Lees Racing runner – solid form and Jim Byrne on top. Has had a six week freshen up and does race well at Doomben – keep your eye on this runner despite the large weight and wide barrier.
Selections:
7 – Thine is the Power 12 – Widespread 13 – Oh Five Glory 2 – Snowzone Rough chance – (5) Racecourse Road _______________________________________________________________________
