THE MORRISEY STABLE - A QUIET ACHIEVER MAKING THE MOST OF ITS OPPORTUNITIES

There are some trainers who fly under the radar irrespective of how many winners they are producing. Take the Gold Coast based trainer Scott Morrisey for example.

Morrisey has been reeling in a steady supply of city, Saturday winners in Brisbane since the start of the season without having his runners ever seriously rattle the betting boards … and the wins just keep coming.

Love Struck won at Doomben today. It was the five-year-old chestnut’s third win from five starts this season and he started at $6. Other winners over this very productive period for the stable have been the likes Blacklog, Safework, Parko, to name a few, … no big names to write home about, maybe, but they are certainly runners who are carrying the stable flag to good advantage.

“We have had a good run,” said Morrisey. “We have been lucky because we have got half a dozen horses who are up to that lower grade of race and when they have got there they have been able to win … and some have been able to win again.

“Love Struck is a nice horse … so is Safework and Blacklog and horses like that. They are real wet trackers though and they got their wet tracks when they won.

“It was pretty dry there for a long time where we went months without a winner. Then we were lucky because we suddenly had this group of six or seven horses, which is a quarter of the stable, that could win races all ending up in work at the one time.

“Once this group of horses all go to the paddock there is not a real lot left there … unless we can get a couple of nice, young horses,” continued Morrisey. “So, we’ll enjoy it while it lasts, but we know the run will dry up at some stage because we haven’t got the numbers to keep it going.

“We’ve got about twenty in work at the moment. We can handle probably double that … forty … but, once you get to that forty, you have got to find more staff and more riders, so I would say our ideal number would be about thirty and we are always looking for new owners to join us.

“Out facilities are good. Gundaroo Stud own the stables there. Len Hoyle and Robin Lees, who own Gundaroo, have been with us for a very long time.

“Gundaroo don’t do anything half-hearted. We’ve got undercover sand yards, then there are the stables … there are fifty boxes there, that’s with feed rooms and wash bays, there are two eight horse walkers, a treadmill.

“These facilities, which obviously are very important in any training setup, are very good and having them at our disposal has obviously played a part in the success we have been having,” concluded Morrisey.
