WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 31, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER 2020
This weekend we head back to DOOMBEN with the track rated “HEAVY” (at the time of writing) after the rain has thrashed the South East over the past week. The rail 6 metres out for the entire circuit. That is a fair way out so leaders may have a distinct advantage this weekend.
The focus is again on the Rosehill and Flemington meetings this weekend. What about no one at the track at Flemington come Melbourne Cup Day 2020 – this is one for the history books. I am sure the TABs around the country and the pubs and clubs will be gearing up for a massive day!
I will be working hard – but will have a preview on Tuesday morning for the Cup 2020 – so stay tuned!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
Race 1
The two-year-old runners start off the day – get to the parade ring and looked for the youngsters with the webbed feet!
Not a race that I have any confidence in but I am tipping Saturday Sinner (8) trained by Kelly Schweida and to be ridden by Jim Byrne – just because of the fact he has drawn well and seemed to be working home nicely first up at the Sunshine Coast. Goes up in distance this weekend - $21 on offer – each way for me!
The top weight is Mishani Scandal (1) from Les Ross Racing who won on debut before an average effort second up – maybe just a case of the second up blues. He has the addition of the winkers this weekend. Jimmy Orman could beat his future mother in laws horse (Saturday Sinner) home – if he does, he will be sleeping in the dog house!
As for the rest of them the Michael Costa runner has had some support – Far Reaching (4).
Collay’s Spirit (6) has a tongue tie on this weekend – he will be better for his first up run – Michael Cahill to ride.
Selections:
8 – Saturday Sinner 1 – Mishani Scandal 6 – Collays Spirit 7 – Grey Defence Rough chance – (4) Far Reaching
Race 2
Looks like a battle between the two runners that went around the other weekend – Magic Conqueror (1) and Soul Dancer (3). On that occasion the Desleigh Forster trained Soul Dancer took the chocolates.
This weekend I think there may be a reversal of that result with Kelly Schweida trained Magic Conqueror (1) claiming victory for mine with Larry Cassidy in the saddle. He has some good form on wet tracks, and this may be the difference.
Olympic Class (4), from the Michael Costa stables on the Gold Coast, won on debut and has been heavily supported since the markets have opened.
If you want a roughie - $81 – Runard Redbut (9) has good form in the wet – as does jockey Adin Thompson!
Selections:
1 – Magic Conqueror 3 – Soul Dancer 4 – Olympic Class 9 – Runard Rednut
Race 3
Some dual acceptors here – the race could be decimated by scratchings.
The Gollan Racing runner Lyrical Girl (1) has won her past three starts since resuming from a spell – you cannot do any better than that! There is some speed in the race – she will get a nice trail into the race and Baylee Nothdurft will wait late before he exposes her. She has some admirable form on wet tracks.
Expert Eye (6) resumes from an 18-week spell from the Schweida Racing yards. I expect her to sprint well fresh but she will be long odds here this weekend – Jimmy Orman aboard.
Selections:
1 – Lyrical Girl 6 – Expert Eye 7 – Triple The Fun 11 – Soubrette
Race 4
Another short distance race – this time for the boys!
I suppose the topical tip today would have to be Leadership Spill (3) with the Queensland State Election taking place today (YAWN) – the loser will be banished to the back benches and the winner, well, they will have to guide us out of the financial mess the State is in due to COVID -19.
Oh, by the way, Leadership Spill (3) is trained by Tony Gollan and will be ridden by Georgina Cartwright this weekend. Will race on the speed and fought on last start – serious chance.
The stable-mate is Ready To Roam (7) who really never got a clear shot at them last start. Baylee Nothdurft rides again and it has some solid heavy and wet track form – he looks a great chance at $10.
Skins (8), from the David Vandyke yards, ran well last start here. That was after a 61-week spell. The wet track will be no drama – Stephanie Thornton rides for the stable this weekend.
Ruuca (6) resumes for the Edmonds Racing stables on the Gold Coast. He has been gelded. Two recent trials have been great – two wins. This runner has exceptional wet weather form. Brad Stewart to ride and looks a serious contender her.
Selections:
7 – Ready To Roam 6 – Ruuca 8 – Skins 3 – Leadership Spill
Race 5
A distance race – 2040 metres – it will a slugfest in the straight.
Stuart Kendrick trains Fastnet Cyclone (7) who goes down 5 kilograms this weekend. This runner likes wet tracks and, down in the weights, I think may get back into the winners circle – Jimmy Orman with another nice ride.
Shogun Sun (10) just loves heavy tracks – the wetter the better for this Kelly Schweida runner. He is on the quick back up from last weekend and he raced well then over the mile. He goes up in distance and have the services of QUEENSLANDER Jim Byrne this weekend. He has a good record aboard this gelding.
Plumaro (9) is another runner who thrives on wet tracks. Last time out at Ipswich he was flashing home late and just was beaten by a leader who held on late. Kevin Kemp has not had a city winner for a while. Maybe there is a change of fortune for him and this runner this weekend. Ben Thompson remains aboard.
Selections:
7 – Fastnet Cyclone 10 – Shogun Sun 9 – Plumaro 12 – Kimpembe Race 6
An open race over the mile here – looks a solid field for the last leg of the early Quaddie.
The race already has a few scratchings and looks like it may fall away further.
The sensation from North QLD gets his chance to post consecutive wins in the big smoke – The Harrovian (1) trained by Stephen Massingham. Brad Stewart remains aboard this weekend – he rode him to perfection last start. He has won on a heavy track as well.
The likely challenger will be Plitvice (10) from the Robert Heathcote Racing stables. He thrives on wet tracks and will be right in this.
Testashadow (9) just seems to thrive when he comes to Queensland – look for him to be in the finish again this weekend.
Selections:
1 – The Harrovian 10 – Plitvice 9 – Testashadow 2 – Glenall
Race 7
The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend with the ten races scheduled.
Impasse (9) had not much luck across the road at Eagle Farm last start. This weekend he is back on a track where he goes well. Mark Du Plessis replaces Robbie Fradd this weekend. Third up here - look for an improvement.
Grey Missile (7) is second up here for his new stable – Edmonds Racing. With a superb second up record - 4 wins from 5 starts - and with solid efforts on wet tracks I am going for an upset here. Ben Thompson takes the ride – oh yes, one more thing the extra distance will suit him down to the ground.
Emerald Kingdom (5) is second up for Robert Heathcote – just a worry on the wet surface for me.
Red Chase (3) is third up here for Desleigh Forster as well – again the wet track may be against him.
Selections:
7 – Grey Missile 9 – Impasse 5 – Emerald Kingdom 3 – Red Chase
Race 8
A No Metro Win race – they just keep getting harder.
I am going for a rough result here with the Toowoomba trained, Mark Currie runner Countess De Galvez (4) who normally races well fresh and will race well on the wet track. Matthew McGillivray is aboard for the stable – it would be great to see him back in the winner’s stalls covered in mud! (not that I would wish bad luck on a Queenslander)!
Depths Below (10) is a Gillian Heinrich runner. He is second up here and I think will appreciate getting back onto the Doomben surface this weekend.
David Vandyke will probably have his eyes fixed on the Golden Eagle at Rosehill after this race as his superstar Alligator Blood will be racing for his share of $7.5 million in stakes. In the meantime, his runner Weboughtazou (1) just keeps going from strength to strength winning both starts since resuming from a spell. He has earned the big weight with his consistent racing. Just concerned that the weight may bring him back to the field, but he does have the services of Michael Hellyer who rates them well and will be patiently waiting to set him on fire on the straight.
Abdicating (13) is trained by Damien Batters and has been ridden to victory last start by Jake Bayliss who he retains the ride. This runner with his light weight could make the race interesting.
Selections:
4 – Countess De Galvez 10 – Depths Below 1 – Weboughtazou 13 – Abdicating Rough chance – (2) Ashman
Race 9
A large field over the mile here.
Last start it was a narrow victory to the Gollan Racing trained Seeingisbelieving (1) after Prospectus (7) could not run him down in the straight. It was my fault. I declared Prospectus (7) that day and as Luke Dittman said after the race that “probably cost him half a length”. So, this week I am double declaring him! So, get going a bit earlier this week Luke. I need him to win and anchor my all up into NSW winning Origin 1 on Wednesday night!
That race was won probably by the claim for apprentice Georgina Cartwright. This weekend the slight weight turn around should see Prospectus (7) getting home – but if leaders are winning it may be best to stay with the Gollan runner.
North Afrika (9) may be hindered by the wet track – it is normally dry in the northern areas of Africa! This runner ran third to the two runners I mentioned above. He normally performs best third up – so he maybe still one run short.
Alderman (5) won last start at Ipswich – could go on with that solid form here this weekend – Justin Huxtable rides again.
Selections:
7 – Prospectus 1 – Seeingisbelieving 9 – North Afrika 5 – Alderman
Race 10
The last race – will the rain stay away? Will we see the last race this weekend? Will WINNO get wet? Who wins the State election … stay tuned for the answer Saturday evening!
There is some value here with the top weights having to concede some weight to the ones down the bottom of the field.
Unguarded (16), from Munce Racing, bolted in last start here. She goes up in class, however, given the same circumstances and a clear run at them late, she could put another win on the board. Larry Cassidy remains aboard this weekend.
All Important (6) led them here last start and got run down in the shadow of the post by Beaufort Park (2). They both go up in the weights this weekend, but Beaufort Lad meets him better at the weights here. Beaufort Park (2) was unlucky in the straight as well – got an obstructed run in the straight and still got the job done – Adin Thompson rides him, and his claim will help him here.
Voila (14) is from Chris Waller stables on the Gold Coast. She races well on wet tracks – Luke Dittman up again – maybe he can ride the last two winners?
Metson (17), from the Gary Duncan yards, loves wet tracks as well and if we get to this race, I expect the track to be a mess. Down in weights and with Taylor Marshall to ride he could be another runner at odds to upset the final leg of the Quaddie.
This race will be tough – and I am forecasting a massive trifecta and first 4.
Selections:
16 – Unguarded 14 – Voila 17 – Metson 6 – All Important Rough chances – (2) Beaufort Lad, (7) Royal Hale ______________________________________________________________________

WINNO V FLEMO
WINNO got FLEMO last weekend in the abandoned meeting – the last few races would have been interesting, but I will claim a victory when I can! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
