WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, DECEMBER 5, 2020
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, December 3, 2020
This weekend we are at DOOMBEN with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is out 1.0 metres for the entire circuit. Weather forecast as HOT – be sure to keep out of the sun on the weekend as the racing starts to warm up for SUMMER in Queensland!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
Race 1
A relatively small field of two-year-olds to start off the day.
The first starter from the Steven O’Dea, Matthw Hoysted stables It’s All Talk (7) and was a brilliant winner in a recent trial at Doomben. If she brings that form to the track this weekend, she will be very difficult to roll here.
Subterranean (5) was impressive on debut at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. He would have benefitted from the outing and Michael Cahill goes in the saddle this weekend. He seems to get the best out of these babies – maybe we could follow the exposed form and see this Matthew Dunn Racing runner in the winner’s stalls after the race.
Ready Mister Music (2) from Stuart Kendrick yards may be a rough chance here after a recent win on his home track last start.
Selections:
5 – Subterranean 7 – It’s All Talk 2 – Ready Mister Music 1 – Collays Spirit
Race 2 TAB 2020 Country Stampede Final
A great initiative by Queensland Racing. This is the Country Stampede Final over 1110 metres.
It is a rough race to line up the form. But I will give it a crack.
Look I could not split Absolute Bonza (7) and Muiron (8) but in the end it came down to the barriers they drew – Absolute Bonza drew 18 and jockey Ben Thompson for trainer Kevin Miller will need some luck from out there. Then, Muiron drew barrier 4 with Michael Cahill to ride for Bevan Johnson. The good gate leads me to think he will get a great run and be the one to beat.
Raiden (2) trained by John Manzelmann and to be ridden by Brad Stewart is right in the race as well drawing barrier 8. With the speed that is in the race, I expect this runner to be a few pairs back and he will launch his claim late and could pip them all at the winning post!
Selections:
8 – Muiron 7 – Absolute Bonza 2 - Raiden 3 – Zukaz
Race 3
A difficult field over 1600 metres.
Plitvice (4) from the Robert Heathcote stables comes off a solid win last start. I think that he is the one to beat here.
Tokoriki Lad (2) was a winner too last start at the Sunshine Coast over 1400 metres for Tony Gollan. This weekend Adin Thompson goes on the runner. This is the runner that displayed some odd antics as he crossed the line to win. Maybe he will keep his mind on the job over a mile.
Picka Plum (11) always races well second up and gets a distance more suitable this weekend – he may upset the more favoured runners and gets in well at the weights.
Selections:
4 – Plitvice 2 – Tokoriki Lad 11 – Picka Plum 9 – Full Nelson
Race 4 TAB 2020 COUNTRY CUPS CHALLENGE FINAL
Hard again to line up the form – but here goes nothing!
Paniagua (3) from North QLD trained by Alex Malliff has got the NSW “King of The Coal Fields” Robert Thompson to come to Doomben to ride his runner. The four-year-old gelding has an imposing record with 7 career wins from 12 starts. Ideally drawn this weekend, he will be hard to beat.
Maquereau (13) was a great second last start to Paniagua (3) at Cairns. He is trained by Sharlee D’Avila and will be partnered by Ronnie Stewart in this race.
Eschiele (3) is trained by Todd Austin and will be ridden by Dan Ballard. Despite being an eight-year-old he is very strong over the mile and will be right in this race.
My Cousin Bossy (8) is trained out west by John Patterson and will be ridden by Ross Tilley. Forget the last run over 1200 metres at Roma - the mile is his go and he will make this a special day if Ross can get this one home. Maybe Brisbane’s new number one strapper Bubba Tilley (who made his debut at Kilcoy last Sunday) could strap this one!
Selections:
3 – Paniagua 13 – Maquereau 2 – Eschiele 8 – My Cousin Bossy
Race 5
The Winning Rupert Plate over 1200 metres.
I think - back to set weights - I like the Munce Racing runner Kavak (1) to prevail here with Larry Cassidy to ride. I thought that third up the weight stopped him, but back to the set weights this weekend I expect he will be in the finish when the judge calls a halt to the race.
Acrobatic (4) from the Kelly Schweida Racing yards had some gear changes last preparation and that assisted him. His recent trial was sound, and he looks primed for a first up effort with Ryan Maloney to ride.
Shooting For Gold (5) has had four starts for Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted and has not been out of the money yet. His trial on Tuesday this week looked wonderful and he could be primed for a great summer. Justin Huxtable again stays on this runner.
Do not underestimate the chances of the Scott Morrisey trained Safework (3) to be ridden by Jim Byrne.
Selections:
1 – Kavak 4 – Acrobatic 5 – Shooting For Gold 3 – Safework
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie this weekend. The race is over 2000 metres.
So You Win (3) ran a gallant race at the Sunshine Coast over a mile when run down late by Ballistic Boy. He previously won over 2030 metres here so the distance will be no trouble. Luke Dittman goes back on this runner this weekend for the Chris Waller Racing team at the Gold Coast. Tough to beat here.
Seentoomany was beaten by the stable mate last weekend here BUT she was knocked out of the race around the 200 metres and never got back into the race. To be fair, when she met the misfortune she was working nicely into the race and probably may have ran a placing. This weekend Jim Byrne is in the saddle as she drops sharply in weight to 54 kilograms. There is $26 on offer in some markets – I would be snapping some of that up each way.
Free Fly Too (9) from the Desleigh Forster racing team looks well placed here as well. Ben Thompson rides this gelding. Forget the run at the Sunshine Coast last start where he was forced to go forward and got caught wide over the mile. Back to a longer distance and a nice draw this weekend he will be making his presence felt in the final 100 metres.
Star Of Michelin (13), a Stuart Kendrick trained runner, returned to the winners stall last start over a mile at his home track. This weekend he steps up in distance and class and goes dramatically down in weight. Stephanie Thornton takes over this weekend.
Selections:
3 – So You Win 11 – Seentoomany 9 – Free Fly Too 13 – Star Of Michelin
Race 7
Class 6 race over 1350 metres – a competitive race.
Widespread (13) from Munce Racing is third up here this weekend for the new stable. In each run he has shown a good progression since the commencement of this preparation. Last run, at the Sunshine Coast, would suggest that he is knocking on the door. At around $14 this weekend he represents great each way value in this race.
Awesome Pluck (8), like the previous runner I have mentioned, looks like he is enjoying his new stables – Desleigh Forster. He is third up and has been developing nicely this preparation. I think getting back to 1350 metres and a nice barrier draw should see him nicely into this race. The conditions of the race certainly suit his him and Ronnie Stewart (who can ride a winner) gets the ride this weekend for the Forster stable.
Great Keppell (9), from Edmonds Racing, is the early market favourite. He has been in solid form with two wins and a second in his past three outings. He led two starts ago here and was run down late by Royal Hale. That form is strong for a contest like this and Ryan Maloney will ensure he gets the run of the race.
Peppi La Few (2) is the stablemate to Great Keppell and will be partnered by Brad Stewart this weekend. Personally, I think he is better ridden off the speed. His recent effort at the Sunshine Coast was strong and third up now into his preparation, he could show up here this weekend.
There is some value in my top two tips – but all four here have a genuine claim to this race.
Selections:
13 – Widespread 8 – Awesome Pluck 9 – Great Keppell 2 – Peppi La Few
Race 8 George Moore Stakes Group 3
The feature race this weekend at Group 3 level.
Deep Image (1) was amazing first up and worked nicely into the race late after Jonker (8) came out first up and led and then ran a track record. There is a 2.5 kilogram turn around this weekend and I would think that trainer Robert Heathcote will be licking his lips at a chance to reverse the result of the first up effort when Jonker was just too good. Michael Cahill rides. He has a great record on this seven-year-old gelding with 5 rides for 2 wins and 2 placings. Deep Image’s second up record is solid as well. $12 is over the odds for mine!
Jonker (8) resumed from an 18-week spell and, well, was just AWESOME first up. I have never seen a horse come out and dominate a quality field like he did in the Keith Noud. He jumped and led and showed them a clean set of heels. Jim Byrne retains the ride this weekend – we won’t be taking $26 this weekend as he is the solid $2.70 favourite.
There is nothing much more to say about this runner – go to the replay and watch it! The only reservation is that the weight differential this weekend may just level the field here. He goes good second up as well. Maybe he just comes out and repeats the performance from a fortnight ago!
Jonker’s stable mate is Outback Barbie (6) and she has some important changes this weekend. The first is she gets winkers for the first time and the second one is the most important for mine – Michael Rodd gets on her here for this first up assignment. She raced at Group level last preparation before a cameo appearance in Sydney in some high-quality races. Look with the speed on this weekend with Jonker (8) and The Odyssey (5) in the race you must consider her to resume here with a slashing effort. They have here at $17 in some markets – they are absolute ridiculous odds.
I think I can make a case for both Deep Image (1) and Outback Barbie (6) to roll the favourite Jonker (8) this weekend.
Tambo’s Mate (3) resumed at his home track over 1000 metres. That was too short, and he steps up to a more favourable distance this weekend with Matthew McGillivray to ride. This runner has a good second up record and races well at this distance. Speed on – I can see him one pair back with Matty waiting for his chance to pounce.
The Odyssey (5) had a barrier trial on Tuesday this week. A great effort and he will be prominent in the running from barrier 5. Stephanie Thornton remains aboard for the Kelly Schweida Racing team here. This four-year-old stallion loves the Doomben track and will take a ton of running down. Just wish he had less weight for this race, but his performances have earned him the large weight. Darren Whalley will be happy I haven’t tipped him in my top four – this normally means he comes out and wins!
Selections:
8 – Jonker 1 – Deep Image 6 – Outback Barbie 3 – Tambo’s Mate Rough chance – (5) The Odyssey
Race 9
The last race – another open field – 3-year-old fillies at Listed level over 1200 metres.
Chris Anderson Racing has Plutocrat (8) racing second up this weekend. Her effort first up when beaten narrowly by Dusty Tycoon (2) was nothing short of amazing. Her sectionals in the final stages of the race showed me that she has returned this preparation in fine fettle. $10 each way all day for mine. We have Michael Cahill aboard in the saddle. WINNO is going out on a limb here – this could be my best for the day!
I just cannot see her being beaten again by Dusty Tycoon (2) again this preparation. If the track becomes a leader bias late in the day like it has done the past few weekends then she may struggle, however, if she gets any luck she will power over the top of this lot late.
The two Tony Gollan Racing runners both have genuine chances – Isotope (7) and Starosa (2).
Isotope (7) has some gear changes with the barrier blanket, blinkers and a brow band for the first time. She was fractious in the stalls last time and didn’t jump away cleanly away. I cannot recall her doing this ever in her career. I think that this was a surprise to both Tony Gollan and jockey Baylee Nothdurft who rode her last start. Since that run, a month ago she has had a nice barrier trial where she went well. She has the perfect draw on the rails this weekend in barrier 1. Ryan Maloney is in the saddle – a lot of positives to say she will turn around that first up effort and will be very hard to beat here. I have just gone for some value this weekend.
Starosa (3) drops back in distance from her recent win at 1350 metres here a month ago. She will be suited with the speed on in the race. The dropping back in distance did concern me at first, however, with the pressure on I expect her to trial nicely into the race and make a solid run at the leaders late – she will be strong hitting the line and probably will step up to 1400 metres next start. Whatever she does this weekend I will be want to on her next start.
Paredo (9) from the Edmonds Racing camp has resumed with two consecutive wins from a spell. Winning form is hard to knock. Robbie Fradd retains the ride on her here this week. She is only lightly raced, and this is her biggest test – she could be up to the challenge.
Freya’s Cloak (10) from Stephen Lee yards will put some speed in the race – she maybe over-raced first up and the effort told late. She will strip fitter for that effort and Michael Rodd could make a difference here on her - $81 on offer she could put some spice in your exotics in this last race!
Selections:
8 – Plutocrat 7 – Isotope 3 – Starosa 9 – Paredo Rough chance – (2) Dusty Tycoon & (10) Freya’s Cloak ____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
I am going for Michael Cahill to get the job done this weekend. He should be good odds as well. A sly back up bet on Ben Thompson may not go astray!

WINNO V FLEMO
FLEMO got WINNO in our tipping competition last weekend. The battle continues. We tipped five winners – two trifectas and two first fours. Flemo tipped a first 4 in order that paid over $400. It was a great weekend for those who followed us! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
