WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 11 DECEMBER, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – FRIDAY 11 DECEMBER 2020
This Friday we have the traditional twilight meeting at DOOMBEN. Starting at 2.30pm we go into the early evening. Normally the meeting is well supported with people knocking off work early for some X-mas drinks and fun at the races – it is normally a great afternoon. However, there is always the chance of an afternoon storm! This weekend is no different with the weathermen in Brisbane forecasting rain in huge amounts starting on Friday for the whole weekend – I believe it when I see it – just saying!
The track rated for the Doomben meeting is rated “GOOD” and the rail is out 6.5 metres for the entire circuit. I will just stick to numbers and maybe a small comment for this meeting.
Race 1
Some good speed in the opening race – maidens going around here. Think this could be a rough result so play wide.
I like the recent barrier trial of High Handed (7) from the Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted Racing team. First up here at a big price - could be an upset to start off the day.
Gillian Heinrich from the Gold Coast is well represented with her two starters – Reachforthestars (9) and Miss Hustle (11). Both have had recent solid performances and must be respected.
Selections:
7 – High Handed 9 – Reachforthestars 12 – She’s An Eagle 11 – Miss Hustle Rough chance – (5) Boomnova
Race 2
A sprint over 1050 metres.
Iolite (2) was sensational recently with a win and a record-breaking performance at Kilcoy. I have a big opinion of this runner – this is the acid test. Jimmy Orman remains aboard for trainer Natalie McCall.
Les Ross Racing has Mishani Miss (1) resuming here. Normally this meeting is the first leg of the State of Origin Jockeys competition, however, with COVID-19 stuffing things up it is not happening this year. The irony is that the stable has booked Michael Rodd (an NSW man through and through) and he will wear the sky blue (mighty NSW) colours for the stable on this runner. She has always shown some ability and looks the testing material here.
Bleu Zebra (7) is a Gollan Racing runner – look for improvement here – Glen Boss to ride for the stable. It sought of does have a NSW v QLD feeling.
Selections:
2 – Iolite 1 – Mishani Miss 7 – Bleu Zebra 3 – Boom Spender
Race 3
A difficult field over 1200 metres.
Hard to split the two last start winners at the Sunshine Coast.
Soubrette (6) from the veteran Brian Smith yards with Larry Cassidy to ride and the Stuart Kendrick training The Darling (11) with Michael Cahill to ride.
Take your pick here – both are genuine chances.
Selections:
6 – Soubrette 11 – The Darling 8 – Cotton Fields 9 – Spirit Rich
Race 4
This is a tough race – not keen.
Platinum Euros (11) resumed in a strong race at the Sunshine Coast last start when beaten by Garibaldi. Trained by Natalie McCall ridden by Glen Boss, this may be the safest way to play.
Maybe a strong watch on the David Vandyke runner first up here My Boy Sam (9) who resumes here for the stable and normally races well fresh.
NB: It is the first leg of the Quaddie as well with only seven races today.
Selections:
11 – Platinum Euros 9 – My Boy Sam 8 – Liability 7 – Final Declaration Rough chance – (5) Spending My Time
Race 5
Only a field of eight here over the mile.
Ballistic Boy (3) won well last start – with this small field he should have very little drama in putting them away here. Trained by Chris Anderson Racing and to be ridden by Matthew McGillivray again – he could be a solo one out in the first leg of the treble.
Snitch (4) from the Gollan Racing yards has been racing consistently and will be sitting in behind the speed here. If Ballistic Boy (3) doesn’t get any luck in the running, he looks the likely runner to cause an upset.
Gaulois (1) makes his QLD debut for the James Cummings team. Down in class – could just spring an upset despite the large weight.
Selections:
3 – Ballistic Boy 4 – Snitch 1 – Gaulois 8 – Countess De Galvez
Race 6
A Class 2 event over 1640 metres. These are getting tougher!
Think I may go for some more value here with the Les Kelly runner from the Gold Coast – Sokudo (6) with Glen Boss aboard. Currently around $21. Look I can make a case for this runner on his last start effort when he was fourth up behind Beachbreak and he stormed home late over 1350 metres. I think the extra distance will suit, some good tempo in the race will help and we have a world class jockey in Glen Boss to assist him.
Nic Nat Nui (7) from the Gollan Racing yards had every chance in my opinion last start at the Sunshine Coast when he was sent out favourite. Gollan has added the lugging bit for this start and engaged Michael Rodd to get this runner to win a race – these are two massive things in his favour. I probably have gone the wrong way here – you can tell I think that this runner is a genuine hope. You can back him and save on the longer priced one!
Run On (2) from the Edmonds Racing team – respect this runner with Robbie Fradd in the saddle.
Selections:
6 – Sokudo 7 – Nic Nat Nui 2 – Run On 5 – So You Shop Rough chance – (1) Degas
Race 7
The last race of the day. Then a quick race home to get in front on the TV to watch the BIG BASH cricket!
Class 4 over 1350 metres – let’s hope the rain stays away – WINNO hates getting wet!
I just referenced in the previous race the form coming out of the Beachbreak race the other week.
Several runners went around in that race and I think are the way to go here.
Angus The Black (3) was second up in that race and just looked like he was suffering the second up blues. Forgive that run and go on his first up effort when he slayed them at Ipswich. Ryan Maloney keeps the ride here and he is drawn better in barrier 5 to get a snug run. He looks a great chance.
Chris Waller Racing has had some good success in recent weeks here at Doomben. His two runners come out of the same race with some reasonable efforts. Toomai (11) has Glen Boss aboard and Lubuk (6) has Luke Dittman aboard. Both runners look well placed here. Given some luck they will be right in this race.
Selections:
3 – Angus The Black 11 – Toomai 6 – Lubuk 7 – Stylish Saga _____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
I am going for Glen Boss to get home here. Ryan Maloney looks the only other chance.
