EF OCT 17 - DE LAGO BLOOM BLOSSOMS

By Matthew Grimson and Graham Potter | Monday, October 19, 2009

Eagle Farm, October 17, 2009
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 3m.
2yo QTIS 600 Handicap -1000m. Time: 0-58.39.
1 De Lago Bloom; 2 Jantzen; 3 Paris Blu.

The Alan Bailey trained De Lago Bloom backed up after finishing second to Demanding Miss last week. She started as a well supported favourite and duly landed the win, but her supporters would have been suffering all the way up the straight as she laboured to move into contention before arriving with a late flourish to get the result in the very last stride.

De Lago Bloom mustered enough early speed in a hectic start to get into fourth position just off the pace. From there De Lago Bloom tried to rally early in the straight, but she was still in fourth spot entering the final 200m with the three runners in front of her, the leader Paris Blu, Jantzen and Bust ‘N’ Loose still kicking on strongly.

It was only in the last 50m that De Lago Bloom got the message and lifted her game. Jantzen had just got the measure of Paris Blu, but had shifted out marginally while doing so and De Lago Bloom took the gap late and surged through to snare Jantzen on the line. The official margin was a short-half-head.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Alan Bailey: “Her constitution was good enough for her to back up ... no problem at all. I would rather back her up and run her today then wait for another one and run against all the ones that were in last week when they’d be in again with the benefit of their runs. I thought if I ran here I’ve only got to beat the next lot coming in. So I just gave her a trot around for a week ... put her back in ... and luckily enough she’s won.

“I just think that we’ll tip her out now and we’ll leave her until the carnival. She’s the only one in the family that’s won a race under a mile, I think. She’s nicely settled now in these short races so we’ll put her out and give her a good spell through this hot weather and bring her back for the carnival and there’ll be some nice carnival races for her."

Jockey Glen Colless: “Yeah, she’s probably a little filly that wants to be ridden a touch quieter too. I rode her back in the trail and she finished off good. She just begins that good, she puts herself there. She’s a real little tradesmen. But in the straight she got off the bit pretty quickly on straightening ... just greenness. She took a bit of riding just after straightening and then sort of half didn’t want to go between them, but once she sort of got her head through the rest of her went through and she knuckled down to it, you know ... charged home. Nice little filly, she’s going to make the grade.

“She definitely needs more ground, but, you know, she’s a little filly and she probably just wants turning out for a couple months now.”

PRICE PLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (De Lago Bloom): 2.00 out to 2.10 in to 1.85.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Public Prosecuter (S. Seamer), Driving Reign (K. Pope) and Oldwally (J. Byrne) were slow to begin. Jantzen (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly. A. Spinks reported that approaching the 600m Plum Duff was reluctant to hold its position between Been Perfect (C. McIver) and Craiglea Royale (K. Wharton) and as a result lost ground. J. Byrne reported that Oldwally raced greenly for a short distance approaching the 600m. Emeiliun Rose (P. Hammersley) hung in when placed under pressure in the straight. Driving Reign (K. Pope) hung out rounding the home turn. Paris Blu (M. Hellyer) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. St Halor (A. Pattillo) hung in when placed under pressure in the straight.

A post race veterinary examination of Craiglea Royale failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
The veterinary surgeon also reported that Mr Style was found to be lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer P. Balzen will be advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for Mr Style prior to its next race start.
