MALLYON RIDES FIRST THREE WINNERS FOR THREE DIFFERENT TRAINERS ON DOOMBEN CARD

By Graham Potter | Sunday, January 24, 2021

Jockey Andrew Mallyon took the Doomben meeting on Saturday by the scruff of the neck in the early part winning the first three races on the card.

Mallyon struck first with the Kris Lees trained Mystic Gem, who was winning on debut after a promising barrier trial. Mystic Gem starting price was $5.50.

After the second race Mallyon was back in the winners’ enclosure after guiding the $1.95 favourite Ligulate to victory for trainer Cody Morgan and the rider then duly completed a race-to-race treble aboard the Lindsay Hatch trained Gunnobe, a $7 chance.

“Coming to the track, I thought I had a handy book of rides, said Mallyon.

“I’ve had a lot of luck around Doomben … I really like Doomben … so I was confident because I was on the right track too.

“You don’t get too carried away. You try and give every runner their chance. If you do that and, if they are good enough, you get the right result.

Talking about run of Gunnobe, who has won four out of his last five starts, Mallyon commented, “I felt the speed was pretty genuine throughout. He is the sort of horse that you probably can’t expose too early … so I just elected to sort of suck up on the corner, but everything just opened up and he shot through into the clear.

“He probably got there a tad early for my liking, but he showed good tenacity to the line and held them all off.”
