WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, 6 FEBRUARY, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 4, 2021

EAGLE FARM RACES – SATURDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2021

Eagle farm this weekend – the track full of controversy over the past few weeks. No doubt the spotlight will be on the track, the runners and the pattern of racing this weekend.

This weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is 3.5 metres out for the entire circuit.

There is some rain forecast leading up to the meeting – I do not think that will have any effect on the racing.

The racing is starting to warm up at Caulfield as well – some nice races down there this weekend.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

The two-year-old runners kick off the program this weekend and there is not much exposed form to go on.

Robert Heathcote Racing has a few runners here. I like the runner Yangari (6) who has been “sacked” (he has been gelded) since his debut run here back in October. First up after 18 weeks with Ben Thompson aboard, I think he is a great chance. He had a recent trial – just a stroll and a pipe opener for mine. He has a crack on the track this weekend.

Another Heathcote runner Release The Beans (4) debuts here – has been trialling well.

Les Ross Racing has a few runners as well. Mishani Tulip (8) is on the quick back up after racing last weekend at the Sunshine Coast where he was checked in running and had no luck – maybe a change of fortune here.

Leaglese (10) is trained by Bryan and Daniel Guy and has Michael Rodd aboard – they combined last weekend for a nice win. This runner is owned by the legend, NSW Rugby League coach PHIL GOULD – all kneel! I hope he is at the track and can win the race – a NSW jockey – a NSW legend – get that up you FLEMO!

Selections:

6 – Yangari
8 – Mishani Tulip
10 – Leaglese
4 – Release The Beans

Race 2

The first leg of the Early Quaddie is over 2212 metres. It is only a small field to go around.

Miss Penfold (3) and Watch The Cat (4) do battle again here after Miss Penfold (3) won easily last start. I just think with the 3kg turn around and the longer distance I like the chances of the Barry Lockwood trained Watch The Cat (4) to reverse the decision with Jake Bayliss to ride this weekend.

Do not over-look or underestimate Happy Go Plucky (1) who thrives at this distance and may just be too good for this lot – another nice ride for Michael Rodd.

Selections:

4 – Watch The Cat
3 – Miss Penfold
1 – Happy Go Plucky
2 – Devine Grey

Race 3

Another small field over 1600 metres.

Gunnobe (5) is a Lindsay Hatch runner who was incredibly good last start at Doomben with Andrew Mallyon aboard. Sure, there is a big question mark about coming across the road and can he bring that form to Eagle Farm – but I think it was a solid effort last start and will be hard to beat again.

Foreign Territory (1) is a Stuart Kendrick runner who will be ridden by Sheriden Tomlinson. This pair won last weekend at the Sunshine Coast and they seem to have an impressive strike rate when they pair up. This runner, who shoots for a hat trick of wins here this weekend, has had some solid support since markets opened.

Quality Approach is an interesting runner from Michael Costa’s stables on the Gold Coast. Second up here for the new stable with Jimmy Orman to ride. I think he will be better suited over the mile and I think from barrier 1 will be ridden in behind the speed and may just cause an upset here.

Selections:

5 – Gunnobe
1 – Foreign Territory
3 – Quality Approach
7 – Mosshiki

Race 4

Only seven runners here.

North Africa (6) will be out in front for a long way – will be ridden by Ronnie Stewart and is weighted to be difficult to run down.

Star Of Michelin won last weekend at the Sunshine Coast – again that Kendrick and Sheriden Tomlinson partnership looking for back to back race wins here – could just see Sheriden ride his first Saturday city double! The gelding has an impressive record on this track.

Ligulate (1) won at Doomben last start. Stepping up to the longer distance for me is a concern, however, the small field allows him to settle and flash home late again - Andrew Mallyon aboard - he could ride a race to race double as well!

My tip is the Chris Waller Racing runner Matowi (2) who resumed at Randwick last start over a mile and was working well late into the race to be beaten under a length. I like that he has stepped up in distance and he ran the best last 400 metres sectional of the whole day at the meeting – he shows some of that form here we will see him saluting and Michael Cahill returning to the winner’s stalls.

Selections:

2 – Matowi
6 – North Africa
4 – Star Of Michelin
1 – Ligulate

Race 5

I like some roughies here to get the cash.

The Darryl Hansen trained Go Deep (9) go wells here and maps well in the running to not to get too far back. Jake Bayliss aboard again – a talented rider who has been missed in recent weeks in town. He will attempt to make every post a winner. Into them Jake!

Genzai The Wolf (7) is a Diane Murphy runner who always runs a place at Eagle Farm. There are some things in his favour this weekend – there is some good speed in the race that will permit him to work home late with three kilograms off his back for apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson. However, the risk is if they are winning in front and runners not making much ground, this will go against him – look at the earlier races to see if there is a bias for leaders this weekend.

Lindsay Hatch brings Wolff Boss to town after an impressive effort at Warwick last start. His time was great, and he finished the race off strongly. Andrew Mallyon has the ride here. Look I cannot line the effort up with the other form in the race. He may be simply better than these – but leave me out at $2.90.

Bonparte (11) is another Kendrick Racing runner – the stable has some nice chances in races 3,4 and 5. Itould be a great day for the team who have had some wonderful success in recent weeks.

Selections:

9 – Go Deep
7 – Genzai The Wolf
5 – Wolff Boss
11 – Bonaparte
Rough chances – (6) Bold Hunter

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – 1200 metres is the go.

You Make Me Smile (5) was run down in the final stride last start. I think that despite being second up here this weekend he looks well placed and will be racing on the speed for Stephanie Thornton.

She Za Boss (9) does meet You Make Me Smile (5) better at the weights here for a defeat last start for the Edmonds Racing stables. Robbie Fradd rides. She could race well on a track that she has won on previously.

Let’s Party Marty (6) has apprentice Leah Kilner aboard. She won a race last weekend and her three kilogram claim will be invaluable for this runner – do not overlook.

Baller (1) comes back from some good quality races and despite the massive weight could upset these if he gets clear, uninterrupted running in the straight – Jim Byrne in the saddle.

Selections:

5 – You Make Me Smile
9 – She Za Boss
6 – Lets Party Marty
1 – Baller

Race 7

Over the 1200 metres here for the first leg of the treble.

Gollan Racing combine again with Michael Rodd here and Ingear (4).

I will admit I was sceptical last start, but she won well making the opposition look ordinary. She is very short this weekend at $1.70, but looks a nice chance. Just one caution she has an ordinary record second up.

No Laughing Matter (9) would have taken some benefit from her first run in Brisbane last start at Doomben. Down in weight here this weekend for the Kris Lees Racing stables – maybe she can spring an upset against this hot pot.

Selections:

4 – Ingear
9 – No Laughing Matter
6 – Soubrette
1 – Trail Of Glory

Race 8

The biggest field of the day – 15 runners – well if they all start!

This is a very open race. I am staying with Nicci’s Spirit (9) to be ridden by Georgina Cartwright this weekend. Last start this filly raced over 1200 metres and was too far back on a day where leaders had an advantage – but then she launched out wide in the straight and thundered home. 1400 metres this weekend looks ideal for her third up.

Tycoon Evie (7) flashed home late for Rex Lipp and Mark Du Plessis last start over 1200 metres – the extra 200 metres would suggest that she will be better placed here.

Bellissimi Amici (5), from the Robert Heathcote stables, won here last start over this distance. She has a real fetish for this track where she has never been out of the placings in six starts. Ben Thompson remains aboard.

He Knows (8) from the Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted stables ran home strongly last start but just could not run down the eventual winner Battangas Entry (1). He meets that runner 1.5 kilograms better this weekend for that defeat and Stephanie Thornton keeps the ride.

Battangas Entry (1), as I just said, won over1200 metres last start when they bet a silly price earlier in the week and then was heavily backed in the lead up to the race. This weekend Jimmy Orman takes the reigns and despite the big weight he will race handy in behind the speed and be ideally placed to launch his claim late.

Selections:

9 – Nicci’s Spirit
7 – Tycoon Evie
5 – Bellissimi Amici
8 – He Knows
Rough chances – (1) Battangas Entry

Race 9

The last race of the day – where do I start here?

I was on Maddi Rocks (6) last start on Magic Millions day at $81 – she will not be that price here this weekend. A freshen up of three weeks since that run where she was beaten just under 2 lengths in a blanket finish. She did not have many favours in the running there and this weekend I expect her to be tough to beat with Jim Byrne aboard. She is trained by Chris Waller Racing on the Gold Coast.

Lashoni (13) put in a solid effort six weeks ago when she was narrowly beaten here over the same distance. She races well fresh. Trained by the powerful Tony Gollan stable and will be ridden by Ben Thompson – there is a lot to like about her chances.

Stuttering (3) flew home in the last race on Magic Millions day over 1300 metres and was beaten an eye lash by The Odyssey. He does love 1400 metres so there should be no excuses here this weekend.

Fisticuffs (4) won at the Gold Coast last start a month ago on his home track at the Gold Coast. He is trained by Trent & Toby Edmonds and part owned by NSW legend Tommy Raudonikis. It would be a great effort for him to win again this weekend. He does need a few things to go right in his races – speed – tempo – but if he gets the right conditions, he could win this race. Then it would be a truly momentous occasion – NSW legend Tommy Raudonikis – NSW proud trainer Toby Edmonds and pure BLUE jockey Michael Rodd – what a great winning team!

If leaders are winning do not overlook the chances of the Kacy Fodgen trained Phantom Falcon (1).

Selections:

6 – Maddi Rocks
13 – Lashoni
3 – Stuttering
4 – Fisticuffs
Rough chance – (1) Phantom Falcon
