DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2021
This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN where the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 1.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track should dry out more with some warm weather forecast over the next few days.
Just a brief preview this weekend … selections in all races but I will only provide a few individual race comments.
Thanks to all those who sent me messages for my birthday on Tuesday this week – it was much appreciated!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Michael Costa has had some recent luck on Saturdays. Acumen (4) is his runner here who resumed at the Gold Coast for the new stable last time – he led and was run down late. After the race the vet notes some respiratory issues.
I think after that effort and the fortnight between runs he could the job done at around $12. Jockey Jimmy Orman should be able to ride him for luck this weekend and let horses like Leadership Spill (6) and Centrefire (7) lead – just sit in behind them – and then make a winning move.
Selections:
4 – Acumen 1 – Chica Milagro 11 – Oh Five Glory 6 – Leadership Spill
Race 2
I like Little River (3) to upset the short priced favourite Miami Fleiss (6) here.
Little River (3) got away slowly – then hit the front late and was exposed first up and got run down. Second up here and fitter, I think that Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted will have her ready to get the chocolates second up.
Miami Fleiss (6) looked impressive on debut winning her maiden by 7 lengths at the Sunshine Coast – deserves to be a short-priced favourite on that effort for Gollan Racing and Michael Rodd. $1.50 too short for me here – plus she comes to town for the first time.
Selections:
3 – Little River 6 – Miami Fleiss 1 – Georgies Pride 2 – She Can Sing
Race 3
The recent trial of Blue Kentucky Moon (3) suggests that he is ready to race well fresh here for the Matthew Dunn Racing stables. Ryan Maloney to ride for this first up assignment. He normally box seats in his races and then makes a final surge late – he gets conditions to suit here.
Selections:
3 – Blue Kentucky Moon 2 – Azzareach 4 – Apache Blue 8 – Examples
Race 4
Selections:
5 – Glorious Ruby 6 – Hamlet Von Snitzel 1 – Legal Esprit 2 – Mishani Delight
Race 5
Selections:
3 – Good Chat 5 – Tavis Town 1 – Bushido 10 – Scottish Mist
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie. Tough race for the first leg.
Take Tea (4) won at long odds last start at Eagle Farm for Les Kelly. Travis Wolfgram takes the ride this weekend with Andrew Mallyon heading to Melbourne to ride in the Group 1 Lightning (race 8 – Halvorsen (4) – good luck mate)! With the solid tempo of the race – Take Tea (4) should be able to get home late.
Jetski (4) from the Sears Racing stable was heavily backed last start at the Sunshine Coast and was upset by a long-priced winner – I think the 1350 metres gets him in well. Ben Thompson to ride.
Selections:
4 – Take Tea 8 – Jetski 10 – Erringhi Spring 13 – Express Princess
Race 7
The first leg of the treble here.
Socialising (6) was super last start – three weeks between runs for Gollan Racing – looks well placed.
Grey Missile (3), from Toby & Trent Edmonds yards, goes down in weight and comes back to the Doomben track where he seems to perform better than across the road at Eagle Farm. I think that he maps well in this race and at $11 each way is wonderful value.
Selections:
6 – Socialising 3 – Grey Missile 4 – Phantom Falcon 9 – The Fire Trap Rough chance – (5) Plitvice
Race 8
This is a tough race – anything can win.
Desleigh Forster’s Couldn’t Refuse (8) has been racing consistently. Does love this track and the mile – maps well.
Mick Lakey and Jimmy Orman combine here with Enterprise Prince (9). I just think he strips fitter now after the quick back up over the mile last start at the Sunshine Coast where he finished off nicely. May have just taken benefit from the run – look for him to be right in this here.
Selections:
8 – Couldn’t Refuse 9 – Enterprise Prince 5 – Great Keppell 10 – Mangione
Race 9
The last race – we got here hopefully with some cash in the pocket.
Look I think there is some serious speed in this race. Tony Gollan trains Garibaldi (7) who will be ridden by Michael Rodd and who has won his past three starts. The speed will suit him, and he will be storming home late and fast – he always runs great sectionals late. You can see I am trying to talk myself into tipping him.
I just think the Edmonds Racing trained Ruuca (12) maps the same way where he will get back and fly home late. Jim Byrne takes the ride here and if he wins this race he should secure the jockey’s challenge this weekend.
Ruuca’s run on the Gold Coast was solid when beaten by Yao Dash – he was held up for a few strides in the straight, then had to shift out and balance up again before making a late dash. If he gets a clear run this weekend he could knock off this favourite in the last race at around $8.
Selections:
12 – Ruuca 7 – Garibaldi 14 – Snow Valley 6 – Kylease Rough chances – (5) Ziemba ____________________________________________________________________

WINNO V FLEMO
WINNO got FLEMO last weekend in our tipping competition. The battle continues. I did manage to tip Stephanie Thornton in our late mail last Saturday morning at $17 for the jockey’s challenge! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
