CAN DUNN RENEW HIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE BLUE DIAMOND? BIDDING FOR HIS FIFTH WIN IN THE RACE

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Dwayne Dunn will be looking to renew his love affair with the Blue Diamond Stakes on Saturday.

The sparkle will be back in Dunn’s eyes this Saturday when he gets a leg up aboard the Greg Eurell trained Wolves for the 2021 Edition of the Blue Diamond just three days after he makes his return to the saddle following a long, injury enforced layoff from neck fractures he suffered in a barrier stalls incident at Moonee Valley.

Dunn famously won the Blue Diamond four years in a row from 2005 to 2008. His winners were Undoubtedly (2005), Nadeem (2006), Sleek Chassis (2007) and Reaan (2008), in a period where he seemingly owned the race.

Dunn formally make his comeback today at Sandown. That will be low key compared to the massive step up to the Group 1 Blue Diamond contest so soon after a serious injury, but Dunn will be relishing the opportunity to target a fifth Blue Diamond success.

Wolves, a Wolf Cry filly, goes into the Blue Diamond as a Maiden but she did finish a creditable fifth, just 1.50 lengths behind Dosh in a Group 3 on debut in the Blue Diamond Preview … and then followed up with a third place behind Arcaded in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude, albeit 4.25 lengths behind the winner.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Enthaar dominates the betting for the Blue Diamond at $2.30 with other one other runner, General Beau ($7.50) quoted in single figures.

Wolves is currently unwanted in the betting at $61.
