ALPINE EDGE FLYING UNDER THE RADAR IN THE TODMAN

The Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic runner-up Alpine Edge returns to action at Randwick on Saturday where the talented, Toby and Trent Edmonds trained colt will take on a host of lively Golden Slipper contenders in the Group 2 Todman Stakes.

There is no shirking of the task here for Alpine Edge’s in his first-up assignment with the likes of Profiteer, Stay Inside, Anamoe and Remarque, to name a few, highlighting the tough nature of the opposition.

“The opposition is absolutely A Grade.” said co-trainer Trent Edmonds acknowledging that fact, “It is a bit of a throw at the stumps to be honest, but he (Alpine Edge) is going great and I suppose the race will us know where he is at.

“He has only lost once. I don’t think he should have lost. I think he should have won the Magic Millions. He missed the kick which took him of out contention essentially. Shaquero was off and gone and we were running him down late.

“If Alpine Edge went into the Todman three from three, everybody would probably be talking about him as well.
“He had about three weeks out after the Magic Millions. When he came back, he didn’t take long to knock into shape.

“He had a good jump-out at home last Tuesday with Vanna Girl and a couple of other sharp ones of ours and some from other trainers at the Gold Coast. There were six or seven horses in it.

“He won. The track was quite soft, but he ran a good time … and what was impressive about it was that he didn’t really blow. I thought he would, but after that I thought he might be pretty close to the mark.

‘We haven’t done a great deal with him since then … just a couple of quiet gallops.

“He is just such a laid-back customer. I think I said it before after his first win. I said, he is out the back and he is asleep. He is like that. That’s how he is and how he gets around, so you can’t really get a great guide on him in trackwork because he is a good trackworker without being outstanding … and then on race-day he probably switches on a bit more.”

And Edmonds’ parting shot for Saturday’s race?

“The blinkers and the tongue-tie go on. Glen Boss on … barrier five,” said Edmonds.

Some food for thought there. You bet there is!
