WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, 13 MARCH, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 12, 2021

GOLD COAST RACES – SATURDAY 13 MARCH 2021

This weekend we are on the scenic GOLD COAST at AQUIS Park track at Bundall.

The massive annual JEWEL program is the feature this weekend. The rail is true for the entire circuit with the track currently rated as Heavy 10 with a fair chance of improvemen so you keep your eye on the track conditions.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

A nice race to start off the day – massive field but plenty of early scratchings.

Tony Gollan has some serious chances here with Pull Anchor (12) and Angus the Black (6).

Pull Anchor (12) will be ridden by Ryan Maloney who has an excellent strike rate when he rides one for Gollan. Pull Anchor has been sent out favourite in her past two starts and has been unlucky – each time running second. Maybe this time she can get into that winner’s stall. She did run a nice race here in the weekend prior to the Magic Millions when she finished behind Stolen Jade.

Angus The Black (6) is will be ridden by Michael Rodd. Despite being drawn wide this runner could get circumstances to suit in the race as there is some pace in the race and he likes to settle and work home late.

Ready Babe is a Mark Currie runner who will have the services of Madeline Wishart who claims 3 kilograms as well. She will appreciate the wet track and the increase in distance here.

Parko (19) is trained on the track by Scott Morrisey – he looks the likely leader. Maybe he can sneak away and cause chaos with the light weight and the good barrier with Ryan Wiggins aboard.

So Taken (14) is trained here as well by the Chris Waller Racing stables. A gear change of a tongue tie going back on and it would appear back in grade, third up from a spell with Luke Dittman aboard – she could put this lot to the sword at a nice price.

This race is incredibly open – it may just pay to sit back and watch and see how the track plays!

Selections:

12 – Pull Anchor
18 – Ready Babe
6 – Angus The Black
19 – Parko
Rough chance – (8) Lubuk & (14) So Taken

Race 2

Another massive field that has been torn apart by scratchings.

David Vandyke makes the long trip down the Pacific Highway looking for a win with Skins (12) who resumes here this weekend after a 19-week spell with Michael Cahill in the saddle. He always races well fresh and loves rain affected tracks. He has had a recent solid trial at his home track – looks well placed here.

Buckin Beauty (14) is trained by Damian Lane. You must respect this stable – they have landed some nice plunges here at the Gold Coast. This runner won here last time out over 1100 metres when she battled on well late. Up in class and with Ryan Maloney aboard and drawn nicely she is a great each way chance.

Air Spirit (15) is from Gollan Racing. She was solid first up winning at the Sunshine Coast then, last time out, raced as if she was looking for longer and she gets a longer trip here this weekend. She loves wet track and a very impressive third up record – another excellent ride for Ben Thompson who comes off a Group 2 Adelaide Cup win on Monday.
The stablemate is Say Haya (10) who resumed in strong race a fortnight ago – longer distance and a wet track she will be right in this with Jim Byrne to ride.

Mark Currie stumps here again with another genuine chance with Je Suis Belle (8) – she was heavily backed last time out at Doomben and was unlucky. They have gone with a senior jockey in Bobby El-Issa this weekend and the wet track will assist her.

Selections:

12 – Skins
14 – Buckin Beauty
15 – Air Spirit
8 – Je Suis Belle
Rough chance – (10) Say Haya

Race 3

Gollan Racing is well represented here - this time with Sugar Boom (1) and Pizone (4).

Sugar Boom (1) resumes from a 9-week spell when she won here is sensational time and style. She goes up dramatically in weight and Michael Rodd retains the ride. The weight is my only concern for this mare. The 900 metres will be no drama. As long as the track is not too heavy, she should be right in the finish. I think that she will jump and run along. If she starts to paddle late watch out for the stablemate Pizone (4) to be storming home late. He resumes from a 17-week spell and had a nice trial recently. He has never been out of the money in five starts first up. He has Bobby El-Issa aboard.

Racecourse Road (2) from Kelly Schweida Racing comes back to racing as well after a ten-week spell. Now he is not all that flash on a heavy track, however, he will be exceptionally competitive on a soft surface. Ron Stewart rides this gelding well and he won on him in a recent trial. He looked very forward in that trial and will probably let the speedster Sugar Boom (1) go early and try and run her down late – he is good each way value at $9.

Be Water My Friend (11) is a three-year-old resuming for a new stable – Daiki Chujo, who has had some great successes in the past few weeks and Nori Masuda rides. He loves wet tracks – in fact the heavier the better – so with no weight on his back and three solid trials under his belt he could upset these more fancied runners if the track deteriorates.

Selections:

1 – Sugar Boom
2 – Racecourse Road
4 – Pizone
11 – Be Water My Friend
Rough chance – (9) Hallsidehankypanky

Race 4

A race over 1800 metres.

Wapiti (7) loves wet and heavy tracks. Not sure what happened last start at the Sunshine Coast where he led. Normally he likes to settle and work home late. This weekend Ben Thompson has been engaged to ride the Gary Duncan runner – look for different tactics – I think that he will be competitive here.

Willo Titto (8) is trained here by Michael Costa – second up – Jake Bayliss to ride. She was caught wide last start first up and tired late. She will strip fitter and she likes this track, distance and wet tracks – she is silly odds for mine with as much as $26 on offer. A great each way chance.

Ligulate (2) from the Cody Morgan stables has just been racing in tremendous form – Andrew Mallyon keeps the ride – he cannot be underestimated.

Dissolution (6) is a runner from David Vandyke yards that I can never catch! His last three starts have been great. I think it will be to my peril that I leave him out here – he may struggle on a heavy track – I said MAY!

Selections:

7 – Wapiti
8 – Willo Titto
2 – Ligulate
6 – Dissolution
Rough chance – (5) Sir Barnabus

Race 5

Edmonds Racing has Vanna Girl (2) engaged first up here this weekend. She resumes after 18 week spell where she raced in Group 1 company in Sydney and Melbourne. She loves her home track and I think that she will be ready to go well here first up. Another nice ride for Ben Thompson. She may need the run – but I can see her storming home here late when the whips are cracking late.

Socialising (5), trained by Gollan Racing, is the early favourite. She has won her past two starts at Doomben and comes here looking for a hat trick of wins with Jim Byrne to ride. She has some form on a heavy track that was solid – so I am confident she will handle the conditions.

Junction (4) is trained by Mark Currie and Bobby El-Issa rides him here. This runner has a superb record on the track. If the other more favoured runners come up a little short, he could cause an upset.

Take Tea (8) won easily last start at Eagle Farm. She steps up to Saturday company here for local trainer Les Kelly – Robbie Fradd to ride. She has a nice record on her home track so must be kept safe.

Selections:
2 – Vanna Girl
5 – Socialising
4 – Junction
8 – Take Tea

Race 6 AQUIS 2-YEAR-OLD JEWEL

First leg of the Quaddie this weekend. One of the feature races on the program.

The Rockhampton sensation Sweet Dolly (7), trained by Kevin Hansen and to be ridden by Justin Stanley, looks nearly a certainty in this race. She was sensational when resuming at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago and if she can run out a strong 1200 metres looks like she will land a massive win for trainer and jockey. Only bad luck should stop her.

Gemelon Bolt (1) is trained by Chris Anderson and will be ridden by Michael Rodd. This gelding was strong on the line over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on the same day Sweet Dolly (7) resumed. He ran a slightly slower time, but he looks like he is just as progressive and will appreciate the step up in distance.

Tikka Ready (4) is trained on the track by Scott Morrisey and will be ridden by Mark Du Plessis. He led the race won by Gemelon Bolt (1) at the Sunshine Coast prior to peaking on his run. He was trialling well prior to that effort. I just wonder back on his home track this weekend if he can show up and fill a place at massive odds - $21.

Kevin Kemp trains Alert And Ready (10) who has always had big wraps on her prior to her debut and losing her rider in the Pat O’Shea back in September last year. A tongue tie goes on this weekend – she is second up, and Andrew Mallyon is aboard again. Do not let the $51 fool you – she has some ability.
Mishani Delight (8) is a Les Ross Racing runner – proven at the distance and has the services of Ben Thompson – another one at big odds - $51.

Selections:

7 – Sweet Dolly
1 – Gemelon Bolt
4 – Tikka Ready
10 – Alert And Ready
Rough chance – (8) Mishani Delight

Race 7

Rex Lipp trains Gem Of Scotland (9) and was injured at this meeting twelve months ago in the 3 year old JEWEL race. She has since trialled and resumed at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. She will have no difficulty enduring the wet track and she does have a wonderful race record. She has drawn wide, but Jimmy Orman knows her well and will give her every chance to return to the winner’s stall.

Jadentom (4) trained by Lindsay Hatch was superb last preparation. Andrew Mallyon partnered her across that preparation. She loves wet tracks – has a 5 win record from 7 starts when resuming and is treated well at the weights.

Chivargo (7) just keeps improving since joining the Darryl Hansen yards. She enjoys soft tracks as well and will have no trouble here with the 1200 metres. With the smaller field she should get the run of the race from jockey Robbie Fradd and be exceedingly difficult to hold out.

Outback Barbie (3) has the blinkers off for this start. Just not too sure how the wet track will suit her. She certainly has a distinguished record at the Gold Coast track – Ryan Maloney jumps aboard for his first ride on her.

There are some rough chances. Maddi Rocks (11) drops back in distance and the smaller field should assist her here.

Selections:
9 – Gem Of Scotland
4 – Jadentom
7 – Chivargo
3 – Outback Barbie
Rough chance – (11) Maddi Rocks & (12) Oh Five Flory

Race 8 AQUIS 3-YEAR-OLD JEWEL

Tony Gollan has found another potential star in Miami Fleiss (13). She has posted two striking wins in her only two career starts. This is her biggest test against some more seasoned runners, and this is her first look at the Gold Coast track on race day AND she may get to run on a heavy track for the first time. Against all of these questions is the steadying influence of Michael Rodd who will be looking for a feature race win on a track where he grew up and learnt his craft. I think that she can win – just $2.10 is a little short for me.

Kisukano (8) returns to add to her Two-Year-Old JEWEL title from last year. She will have no problem with the heavy or soft conditions and at the set weight conditions is well treated at the weights. The distance is more her go as well. I am certain that Michael Nolan has set her for this race – I just wished she had one more run going into the race. Mark Du Plessis retains the ride on her.

Boomnova (10), from Munce Racing, has had an eight week freshen up after some solid runs over the Magic Millions Carnival which included a solid win here. She will be ridden by stable apprentice Justin Huxtable and despite the $31 that is on offer I think that she is a genuine chance in this race. Track conditions, her location in the running all tick a few boxes and represent good value.

Simply Fly (3) has won his past three starts over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast for Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp. On each of these occasions Stephanie Thornton has partnered him. He always comes with a late rush late. I think the 1200 metres is no problem – just concerned that he may need some luck and must peel wide (which may be where the best conditions may be by the time this race takes place) and then somehow run down these leaders. Yes, he can do it – it could be a major upset.

Mass Destruction (2) is drawn well, is second up and will appreciate the genuine tempo as well – do not overlook him.

Selections:

13 – Miami Fleiss
8 – Kisukano
10 – Boomnova
3 – Simply Fly
Rough chances – (2) Mass Destruction

Race 9

The last race – on a massive day of racing – let us hope the rain will stay away!

This is a tough way to end the day.

Ventura Ocean (9) resumed for the Kris Lees Racing stable with Andrew Mallyon aboard at Eagle Farm three weeks ago. That effort has been franked as he defeated Wren’s Day on that occasion who came out and was a dominant winner last weekend. Again, second up on a heavy track and the short odds are my only concern.

Amiticia (15) finishes off the day for Gollan Racing who has a strong hand across the program. This mare resumed at the Sunshine Coast with a super run and the step up in distance will suit her down to the ground. She has drawn wide, but I think that Jim Byrne will be patient and let her settle and get her in and then storm home late. There is some good speed engaged in the race – the faster they go the more likely she will be able to overpower them and claim victory!

Epic Girl (4) trained by Chris Anderson has been down on luck in her recent efforts. This weekend that luck has extended to the barrier draw where she has drawn barrier 20. Adin Thompson is booked to ride – his claim will assist. They probably will push forward from there – if she can get across well and then set up a nice tempo, she could be difficult to run down. You must remember, if the track is a bog or heavily rain affected, or it rains late in the program this mare has webbed feet and will appreciate them conditions.

Love Struck (5) is trained here by Scott Morrisey. Resumes from a 16-week spell. Likes this track and will appreciate the genuine speed as well. Justin Huxtable will ride him well and the claim will assist. He races well at his home track and normally turns in a slashing effort first up – then is incredibly competitive second up. $26 each way are not bad odds.

Selections:
9 – Ventura Ocean
15 – Amicitia
4 – Epic Girl
5 – Love Struck
Rough chance – (1) Cloak & (8) Let’s Party Marty
