MATT MOORE’S GOLDEN SLIPPER DAY PREVIEW
It’s arguably the most prestigious races in the Australian Racing Calendar. Tomorrow 16 runners will compete in the 65th edition of the Group 1 Golden Slipper. The prizemoney for this race - $3.5m. The richest race for the 2yo’s in this country.
On what is a monster day of racing 9 races are on the card with 5 at Group 1 Level. Last week the track was a Good 4 with the rail in the True position … and it showed that not many runners made ground. Tomorrow we’ll be on a Heavy rating. Anywhere between 35-80mm of rain is predicted in Sydney today with another 60-100mm tomorrow. Let’s hope the meeting proceeds. The Rail moves out 3 metres the entire circuit.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
RACE 1. THE LISTED DARBY MUNRO STAKES OVER THE 1200M FOR THE 3YO’S AT SET WEIGHTS AND PENALTIES
A pretty open race to open up Golden Slipper Day with 5 of the 11 runners at single figures in the market. Lord Olympus should roll forward with Holyfield who has the blinkers off for the first time. They should dictate terms in a race that doesn’t have a lot of speed. Bella Nipotina could cross to sit on the lead.
Prague is 3rd up this prep after finishing 4th in the Newmarket Hcp at Flemington last start. Doubtland is 1 of 4 runners that comes from the Fireball Stakes 2 weeks ago. He ran 5th is that race where he resumed and comes into this race 2 from 2 when 2nd up. He’s also unbeaten 3 from 3 on rain affected tracks.
Private Eye’s record is amazing with 5 wins from 6 career starts including 1 win at this track, unbeaten from his 2 runs at the distance and unbeaten 2 from 2 on Heavy. He’s resuming and the only query is Gate 1. He’ll get back in the run.
Tony Gollan brings Isotope to Sydney fresh after a spell. She lost Ryan Maloney in the straight at the Magic Millions but go back to her 2 previous runs where she won both. She beat home Away Game in the Gold Edition and the previous run beat home Gotta Kiss by 3L. She also possesses a win over Wild Ruler.
Lord Olympus won a on a Soft 7 3 starts back and placed in the Inglis Dash.
Godolphin will saddle up Andermatt who hasn’t missed the cash in his 4 career runs which includes 2 wins. He ran 3rd in that Fireball which was taken out by Wild Ruler. Has Heavy track form.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 2 Doubtland
RACE 2. GROUP 3 MANNION CUP OVER 2400M FOR THE 3YO’S
Expecting Hush Writer and Sacramento to bound forward and dictate terms here with Quick Thinker and Skymax to take the sit.
A number of runners possess wet track form at odds. The two top weights in Raheen House and Quick Thinker with the latter being a market mover coming into single figure odds.
Sacramento is the form runner coming in winning 3 of his last 5 runs with his other 2 finishing in the placings. 2 runs back he won the Listed Parramatta Cup. That was on a Soft 7. His last run was a 2nd in the Randwick City Stakes finishing behind Mount Popa.
The Kris Lees runner Collide ran 3rd in that Randwick City. He finished nearly 3 lengths behind Sacramento in that run and meets him a kilo better at the weights here. He should relish the step up in trip.
Dadoozdart attracts interest after his 2nd placing in his last outing which was the Canberra Cup. That was on a Soft 6 where he ran on well just missing out on the line. On heavy tracks, he’s 2 from 2. The blinkers come off for the first time and the visors go on.
Kerrin McEvoy is on the European invader Favorite Moon. He arrives into Australia recording 2 wins at just over 2800m with all 5 of his last runs on wet tracks. This gelding creates interest despite drawing the pole. He has several gear changes for this race.
ON TOP SELECTION - Collide
RACE 3. GROUP 3 BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES OVER 1200M FOR THE 3YO FILLIES AND MARES.
The girls are set to fly here with the speed coming Vulpine just sitting off Every Rose. Emanate will roll forward and should get a nice sit on speed.
Vulpine comes into this race a last start winner taking out the Wenona Girl Quality where she held off Seasons. Her previous run was a 2nd in a BM78 behind Andermatt.
Every Rose began this prep taking out the Lightfinger Stakes then led in the Surround where she faded. Back to the 1200m suits. She also comes through Dame Giselle, Anders and Farnan form lines.
The red hot form runner is Written Beauty who boasts 5 wins from 7 runs. She hit trouble in her last start which was the Challenge Stakes. The big query is how will she handle the extremely wet track. Her only win on rain affected ground was on a Soft 5.
Emanate comes into her 2nd run at Black Type level running a 3rd in the Wenona Girl. She has a great record at the 1200m distance and on rain affected tracks.
Seasons has the ability to win after running 2nd in the Wenona Girl. The 1200m trip is her pet distance with 11 of her 16 career starts at the trip boasting 4 wins and 3 placings. She’s effective on wet ground.
Jen Rules has the 2nd up record and needs to be respected also.
Wayupinthesky hasn’t missed the quinella in 2 goes on heavy ground. She ran a good race when resuming in her last start in Canberra but had no luck to finish 2nd. She draws an ideal gate with a good map and does her best 2nd up.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 2 Vulpine
RACE 4. GROUP 1 RANVET STAKES OVER 2000 FOR THE 3YO’S AT WFA
The first of our Group 1 features has a small field of 5 but plenty of interest in this race. It looks to be a race in 2 between Addeybb and Verry Elleegant.
Addeybb returns the defending champion after beating Veery Elleegant by half a length. He then went on to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes 3 weeks later. 3 runs since then with 2 wins and a 2nd.
Verry Elleegant won that brilliant race in the Chipping Norton Stakes last start turning the tables on Colette who defeated the champion mare when she resumed in the Apollo Stakes. JMac will be hoping to continue to turn a 2nd place into a win again from this race 12 months ago.
Master Of Wine looks the obvious one to run 3rd. 3 of her last 4 runs have been in races won by Verry Elleegant. He’s unbeaten at Rosehill from his only 2 runs.
ON TOP SELECTION – Addeybb
RACE 5. GROUP 1 ROSEHILL GUINEAS OVER 2000M FOR THE 3YO’S
Here To Shock to lead from Gate 3. Kobestar from the wide gate to cross over and roll forward also.
Lion’s Roar steps out fresh from that win in the Randwick Guineas where he came from last to win. 7 career runs and hasn’t missed the quinella in 6 outings. Has had 1 run on heavy going and won.
Mo’unga finished 2nd in the Randwick Guineas. He found trouble in the straight and had to come around 5 runners to find clear air. Once clear, the turn of foot shown was devastating. The run prior he finished 3rd in the C.S. Hayes Stakes when resuming. 3rd up here where’s he’s 1 from 1 and that’s also the case on the Heavy ground.
Wheelhouse appeals running 4th in the Randwick Guineas after having to run wide with no cover. He draws slightly better here and looks to get a good map.
Khoekhoe will relish the step up to 2000m after running 3rd in the Group 2 Autumn Classic last run when resuming. That run was at 1800. He finished off his last prep running 2nd in the Vase at Moonee Valley taken out by Cherry Tortoni over the Cox Plate trip (2040) with his previous run a victory in the Listed Super Impose at Flemington. This looks a good race from him.
Montefilia also comes through the Randwick Guineas where she missed the start to end up running 6th. The last time Jason Collett partnered with Montefilia was 2 starts prior in the Champion Stakes in which they took out the Group 1. The 2nd place getter in the race was Lion’s Roar at this distance.
ON TOP SELECTION – Mo’unga
RACE 6. GROUP 1 GEORGE RYDER STAKES OVER 1500m FOR THE 3YO’S AT WFA
Dreamforce should do his thing and lead from Gate 4 along with Samadoubt from Gate 5. Kolding should get the rails run in behind from the inside gate and Funstar crosses from Gate 8 to get the gun sit.
Kolding comes in here resuming in the Expressway then the Apollo. On both occasions running 2nd to Godolphin runners. His last start was in that brilliant Chipping Norton where he was in it all the way, running 5th but it was a blanket finish with the other 4. Track and distance record shapes up. Bowman sticks.
Avilius is searching for his first win in 545 days but you know he runs well on rain affected ground. He finished 3rd in the Chipping Norton and hasn’t missed the cash from his 5 runs at Rosehill. He’s never ran at 1500m which is a query for me.
Funstar has just rolled over 12 months since her last win and she looks like this is her race. Two 4th placings this prep in the Apollo and the Chipping Norton, loves the wet track and looks to get the gun map. She’s won 5 from 15 runs with 5 2nds. These results have all been on rain affected tracks.
ON TOP SELECTION – Funstar
RACE 7. GROUP 1 GOLDEN SLIPPER OVER 1200M FOR THE 2YO’S
One of the best and most exciting 2yo fields I’ve seen for a while.
Race favourite Profiteer looks to explode from the gates to set the speed with Glistening and O’President. Four Moves Ahead should get a handy sit off speed.
Shaquero has won 2 of his last 3 runs. The 2yo Magic Millions Classic and the Pago Pago last start. Both of those were on Good 4s. The run in between was in the Skyline where he didn’t fire on a Soft 5. He’ll need to overcome heavier conditions than that race and Gate 15.
Profiteer, one of 2 runners the market is coming for and after Tuesday’s barrier draw, is the current favourite. He has Gate 5. His run in the Todman was good but he over raced and was grabbed by Anamoe on the line.
Artorious won the Blue Diamond Stakes where the blinkers were applied, and it worked a treat.
Godolphin suit up Ingratiating and Anamoe who ran 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Blue Diamond. Anamoe took out the Todman his last start 2 weeks ago.
Home Affairs has a case debuting in the Canonbury and running 2nd then winning the Silver Slipper. Both of those runs were on Soft 7 tracks over the 1100m. He ran 3rd in the Todman.
Stay Inside is the other runner the market wants. He ran 4th in the Todman but found trouble, only finding room at the 200m. His run prior on was a win in the Pierro by 4 lengths on a Soft 7. If they’re running on by this race, he’ll be hard to beat from the back of the field.
O’President has G Boss on board coming in off the back of 2 wins. His maiden win at Canterbury on a Heavy 8 was good winning by 4 lengths then Chris Waller saddled him up in the Group 2 Skyline, winning on a Soft 6. He gets the maps and attracts plenty of interest with the wet track form.
Four Moves Ahead is unbeaten from both her runs which have been on a wet track. Her debut was a 4 length win where she was dominant. That was on a Heavy 8. Her last start she took out the Embrace on a Soft 6.
ON TOP SELECTION – Stay Inside
RACE 8. GROUP 1 THE GALAXY OVER 1100M FOR THE 3YO’S,
The last of 5 consecutive Group 1s.
Plenty of speed here despite the wet track. Eduardo to roll forward with Haunt Brion Her from Gates 8 and 9 respectively. Jungle Edge and The Odyssey also out in front from the widest 2 gates.
Eduardo pipped Nature Strip when resuming to take out the Challenge Stakes. Draws a little wider here than that start. Impressive record at the track, distance, 2nd up and wet tracks.
Fabergino has recorded 3 wins from her last 4 runs with a 4th in the Lighting Stakes her only blemish in this streak. She only finished 2.5 lengths behind Nature Strip in that run. She was impressive in her trail on Monday winning her heat on the heavy track recording a last 600m of 34.99.
How many Group 1’s will Chris Waller and James McDonald combine for in this meeting? They partner up here with Haunt Brion Her who is a gun 1st up as she is here. Her 1st up run last prep was a win in the Sheraco were she nearly beat the track record at this track over 1100m. Her last run was on a Heavy 9 running 2nd behind Gytrash in the Winners. Has only missed the cash twice in her 12 career starts.
Jungle Edge. The wetter the better for this 10yo gelding. He’s a definite chance on a Heavy Track. Gets a 4kg swing on Eduaro from his last start.
The Snowdens will send out Wild Ruler a winner of 3 of his last 4 runs including his last race upon resumption where he took out the Fireball Stakes. The query is the track. He’s only had one run on a rain affected ground.
Taillieur, like Jungle Edge loves the wet ground too. In her 8 career starts, she’s recorded 6 wins and two 2nds. She’s unbeaten at Rosehill, 3 wins and a 2nd from 4 at the trip. This is her biggest test but she definitely has the ability to win this, especially on these track conditions. Gets in at 51kg.
ON TOP SELECTION – Tailliuer
RACE 9 GROUP 3 EPONA STAKES OVER 1900M FOR THE 3YO’S FILLIES AND MARES
Speed will come from Missybeel from Gate 11. Fill Of Fun, Miss Siska and Selica from Gate 1,2 and 4 respectively to roll forward also. Polly Grey will relish the conditions but has to overcome the wide Gate and an unfavourable map. The Waller/McDonald duo combine here.
She’s Ideel comes through 2 runs this prep finishing 3rd in the Millie Fox 1st up then 2nd in the Aspiration. Another runner that needs to overcome a wide gate but will run well in the wet.
Kris Lees and Brenton Avdulla combine here with a wet weather specialist in Attention Run. She’s resuming here and has 2 wins on the board from 4 preps. Draws Gate 12 and looks to sit off the speed.
Welsh Legend is on the quick back up after breaking her unlucky streak since her last win on Anzac Day last year to win a BM78 grade at this distance. She won impressively and gets in well at the weights. Tommy Berry replaces James McDonald in the saddle.
ON TOP SELECTION – She’s Ideel
QUADDIE NUMBERS Race 6: 2, 6, 8, 11 Race 7: 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 Race 8: 1, 4, 5, 13 Race 9: 5, 7, 9, 13
