GOLDEN SLIPPER DAY AT ROSEHILL GARDENS - TAKE 2!
By Matt Moore | Friday, March 26, 2021
GOLDEN SLIPPER DAY PREVIEW
The old saying “it’s better late than never” certainly applies at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow. After last Saturday’s Golden Slipper Day was washed out by the torrential and continual rain that lashed the east coast, the ATC had no choice but to postpone the biggest race day, as far as Group 1’s go, until this weekend. Over 300mm of rain fell on Sydney in the space of 7 days. The carnival has also been pushed back a week meaning the final day (All Aged Stakes Day) will now be run on April 24th.
We still have 9 races set down for action on the card with 5 at Group 1 Level. We were set for action on a Heavy track last week. With warm weather and wind about today and tomorrow, all indications are we’ll be on a Soft 7. The Rail will be in the 3 metre position the entire circuit. Form is done for a Heavy 8 with an upgrade to a Soft 7. The form is the same obviously but with barriers changing for all except the Slipper race and changes to the fields, some of the selections have changed. _____________________________________________________________________
RACE 1. THE LISTED DARBY MUNRO STAKES OVER THE 1200M FOR THE 3YO’S AT SET WEIGHTS AND PENALTIES
We had 11 runners set for Race 1 last week. That jumps up to 14 here. Like last week, it’s an open race with nearly half the field in the market at single figure odds. An extremely tough race to kick off the day.
Speed will be set by Supreme Idea from Gate 13 who will roll forward and crossover with Maroboosha from Gate 5 to join. Odeum from the pole, Andermatt from Gate 4 and Bella Nipotina should sit in behind them.
Prague is third up this prep after finishing fourth in the Newmarket Hcp at Flemington last start.
Doubtland is 1 of 4 runners that come from the Fireball Stakes 2 weeks ago. He ran fifth in that race where he resumed and comes into this race 2 from 2 when second up. He’s also unbeaten 3 from 3 on rain affected tracks.
Private Eye’s record is amazing with 5 wins from 6 career starts including 1 win at this track, unbeaten from his 2 runs at the distance and can win on all surfaces. He’s resuming and will get back in the run.
Tony Gollan brings Isotope to Sydney fresh after a spell. She lost Ryan Maloney in the straight at the Magic Millions but go back to her two previous runs where she won both. She beat home Away Game in the Gold Edition and the previous run beat home Gotta Kiss by 3L. She also possesses a win over Wild Ruler.
Lord Olympus won a on a Soft 7 three starts back and placed in the Inglis Dash. The wet track is a big query.
Godolphin will saddle up Andermatt who hasn’t missed the cash on his four career runs which includes two wins. He ran third in that Fireball which was taken out by Wild Ruler.
The inclusions this week:
Odeum. Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr send this filly up from Melbourne who ran fourth when resuming this prep in the March Stakes at Flemington three weeks ago. She won the Listed Jim Maloney and the Group 1 1000 Guineas last prep then ran second to round out the prep carrying 49kg in the Empire Rose. Stepping back to 1200m from that 1400m run in the March is the query, as is the 58kg she’ll carry. Michael Walker also comes up from Melbourne to stick with her. She’s won 3 from 6 career starts.
The Snowdens have entered Marboosha who hasn’t missed the quinella at her three runs on rain affected tracks. Albeit they’ve been Soft 5’s. She comes through some pretty good form lines running second to Macroura in the Woodlands, then third and second to Written Beauty in her two runs last prep. The third place was in the Group 3 Red Roses. She kicked off this campaign winning the Incognitus Stakes at Flemington down the straight over the 1100m. 1200m looks a nice tick here as does Gate 5.
Chris Waller will send out Matchmaker who has come over from NZ. She ran in black type races across the ditch winning the Listed Canterbury Belle. She made her Australian debut in a BM78 at the Kenso track where she got caught for room finishing second to Marway.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 6 Isotope. With the track improving closer to Race 1 and the form she’s had, she’s ready to go. A 70 day break is the only query. ______________________________________________________________________
RACE 2. GROUP 3 MANNION CUP OVER 2400M FOR THE 3YO’S
No change to the speed from last week. Hush Writer and Sacramento to bound forward and dictate terms here with Quick Thinker and Skymax to take the sit.
Sacramento is the form runner coming in winning 3 of his last 5 starts with his other two finishing in the placings. Two runs back he won the Listed Parramatta Cup. That was on a Soft 7. His last run was a second in the Randwick City Stakes finishing behind Mount Popa. The Kris Lees runner Collide ran third in that Randwick City. He finished nearly three lengths behind Sacramento in that run and meets him a kilo better at the weights here. He should relish the step up in trip.
Dadoozdart attracts interest after his second placing in his last outing which was the Canberra Cup. That was on a Soft 6 where he ran on well just missing out on the line. The blinkers come off for the first time and the visors go on.
Kerrin McEvoy is on the European invader Favorite Moon. He arrives into Australia recording two wins at just over 2800m with all five of his last runs on wet tracks. This gelding creates interest despite drawing the pole. He has several gear changes for this race.
The three runners accepted this week are Mustajeer, Nickajack Cave and Shraaoh.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 8 Collide I’m sticking with No 8 Collide who I selected last week. He comes through the Mount Popa form who won the Mornington Cup last week. I like the way Collide hit the line in that last start. Gate 11 the only query, but should sit back and get a good run home. If we’re on a Soft 7 then his soft track record is exceptional. ______________________________________________________________________
RACE 3. GROUP 3 EPONA STAKES OVER 1900M FOR THE 3YO FILLIES AND MARES AT SET WEIGHTS AND PENALTIES
A different race for the third event tomorrow. This was set to be the last race on the card last week with the Birthday Stakes set to be Race 3. They swap positions in the order here.
A quality field of 14 runners with 3 emergencies.
Speed will come from Missybeel from Gate 7. Welsh Legend in Gate 8 will go with her. Selica and Fill Of Fun from Gates 11 and 12 respectively will roll forward also.
Polly Grey will relish the conditions. The Waller/McDonald duo combine here. She’s Ideel comes through two runs this prep finishing third in the Millie Fox first up then second in the Aspiration. She drew Gate 15 last week but draws Gate 2 here.
Kris Lees and Brenton Avdulla combine here with a wet weather specialist in Attention Run. She’s resuming her and has two wins on the board from four preps. Drew Gate 12 last week but draws Gate 1 here.
Welsh Legend broke her unlucky streak 2 weeks ago, since her last win on Anzac Day last year, to win a BM78 grade at this distance. She won impressively and gets in well at the weights. Tommy Berry replaces James McDonald in the saddle.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 7 She’s Ideel. She was one of the best bets last week from Gate 15. She would have had to do some work to get a spot in the field but with Gate 2 tomorrow, will have to do no work. ____________________________________________________________________
RACE 4. GROUP 1 RANVET STAKES OVER 2000 FOR THE 3YO’S AT WFA
The first of our Group 1 features. We had five acceptors for last week but this week we add another four to the mix. Last week it looked to be a race in two between Addeybb and Verry Elleegant. We throw the Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet in here along with the Apollo Stakes winner in Colette.
We had a look at Addeybb and Verry Ellegant last week. Here’s their preview again:
Addeybb. He returns the defending champion after beating Veery Elleegant by half a length last year. He then went on to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes three weeks later. Three runs since then with two wins and a second.
Verry Elleegant won that brilliant race in the Chipping Norton Stakes last start turning the tables on Colette who defeated the champion mare when she resumed in the Apollo Stakes. JMac will be hoping to continue to turn a second place into a win again from this race 12 months ago.
The notable inclusions this week:
Sir Dragonet. He hasn’t fired a shot in his three runs since winning the Cox Plate. He started favourite when resuming here two starts back in the C.F. Orr Stakes at 1400m then was disappointing again in the All Star Mile finishing nearly 8 lengths off from the winner. 2000m here looks good as he’s only missed the quinella once in his 6 starts at the trip.
Colette has been fantastic this prep bouncing out to win the Apollo then just missed grabbing Verry Elleegant in that epic finish to the Chipping Norton. Her last start was in the Sky High Stakes when running fourth, but she found the track to hard. She’s excels on the rain affected ground. Hugh Bowman to take the ride from Gate 6. Look for him to out her in the box seat when the gates go back.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 1 Addeybb. Purely on the class he possesses. The track conditions should favour him over Verry Elleegant. Colette to make up the trifecta. ____________________________________________________________________
RACE 5. GROUP 1 ROSEHILL GUINEAS OVER 2000M FOR THE 3YO’S
We have the inclusions of Milford, Grandslam and Explosive Jack into the field. The Cullinan has also been accepted and is off the quick back up from his third place in a handicap race at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
Speed will be set from one of the new acceptors in Grandslam from Gate 5. Here To Shock draws a lot wider than last week so he’ll cross over from Gate 14. Kobestar from Gate 7 to roll forward also. Mo’unga draws Gate 6 and looks to get the perfect sit in behind them.
Lions Roar steps out fresh from that win in the Randwick Guineas where he came from last to win. Seven career runs and hasn’t missed the quinella in 6 outings.
Mo’unga finished second in the Randwick Guineas. He found trouble in the straight and had to come around five runners to find clear air. Once clear, the turn of foot shown was devastating. The run prior he finished third in the C.S. Hayes Stakes when resuming. Third up here where’s he’s 1 from 1 and that’s also the case on the Heavy ground.
Wheelhouse appeals after running fourth in the Randwick Guineas when having to run wide with no cover. He draws slightly better here and looks to get a good map.
Khoekhoe will relish the step up to 2000m after running third in the Group 2 Autumn Classic last run when resuming. That run was at 1800. He finished off his last prep running second in the Vase at Moonee Valley taken out by Cherry Tortoni over the Cox Plate trip (2040) with his previous run a victory in the Listed Super Impose at Flemington. This looks a good race from him.
Montefilia also comes through the Randwick Guineas where she missed the start to end up running sixth. The last time Jason Collett partnered with Montefilia was two starts prior in the Champion Stakes in which they took out the Group 1. The second place getter in the race was Lion’s Roar at this distance.
One of the new runners in Milford comes into this race off the back of a second place in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby. That was over the mile and a half.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 3 Mo’unga. That run in the Randwick Guineas was enormous. Tommy Berry should get him in the perfect spot from Gate 6. ____________________________________________________________________
RACE 6. GROUP 1 GEORGE RYDER STAKES OVER 1500m FOR THE 3YO’S AT WFA
The big notable one missing from last week’s acceptors to this week’s is Arcadia Queen. The Blamey Stakes winner Star Of The Seas for the Waller camp, the Adelaide visitor in Dalasan for Leon MacDonald and Mizzy for Anthony Cummings are accepted for this week.
Dreamforce should do his thing and lead from Gate 2 this week along with Samadoubt from Gate 12. Kolding draws the widest gate here and will go with Samadoubt. Mizzy will shoot forward also.
Kolding comes in here resuming in the Expressway then the Apollo. On both occasions running second to Godolphin runners. His last start was in that brilliant Chipping Norton where he was in it all the way, running fifth, but it was a blanket finish with the other four. Track and distance record shapes up. Bowman sticks.
Avilius is searching for his first win in 545 days but you know he runs well on rain affected ground. He finished third in the Chipping Norton and hasn’t missed the cash from his five runs at Rosehill. He’s never run at 1500m which is a query for me.
Funstar has just rolled over 12 months since her last win and she looks like this is her race. Two fourth placings this prep in the Apollo and the Chipping Norton and she loves the wet tracks. She’s won 5 from 15 runs with five seconds.
These results have all been on rain affected tracks.
Star Of The Seas. He won’t shock if he wins here with three wins and a second place on the Heavy ground. He won that Blamey Stakes at Flemington two starts back carrying 56kg then went onto the All-Star Mile carrying 59kgs (which he’ll do again here). He got too far back on the tight going of the Valley but came home well to run fifth. He finds a similar gate here to what he had in the All-Star Mile.
Dalasan draws a perfect Gate (4). Let’s go back last prep to the Turnbull Stakes which was taken out by Verry Elleegant. Dalasan finished fourth, but by the narrowest of margins. He’s been disappointing in his three runs since but he is second up here and does have a good record two runs into a prep. He’s never had a run on a Heavy track but has 7 top 3 finishes from 9 on soft tracks. All that tick boxes and his best is capable of winning. K McEvoy aboard too is a huge tick.
Mizzy is the other acceptor this week whose last 3 runs have been in Group 1 company – her last two starts being runner-up finishes. The first of those was in the Canterbury Stakes just missing to Savatiano and was then beaten by 1.50 lengths to the barnstorming Krone in the Coolmore.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 13 Funstar.Draws the pole tomorrow and comes through the form lines of the Apollo won by Colette and the Chipping Norton won by Verry Elleegant. Avilius comes through that race and I think these two will run the quinella. ___________________________________________________________________
RACE 7. GROUP 1 GOLDEN SLIPPER OVER 1200M FOR THE 2YO’S
All nominations and barriers were retained from last week. The only one to come out is O’President for Chris Waller and Glen Boss.
Race favourite Profiteer looks to explode from the gates to set the speed with Home Affairs, Glistening and Rocket Tiger from Gate 13. Four Moves Ahead should get a handy sit off speed.
Shaquero has won two of his last three runs … the 2yo Magic Millions Classic and the Pago Pago last start. Both of those were on Good 4s. The run in between was in the Skyline where he didn’t fire on a Soft 5. He’ll need to overcome heavier conditions than that race and Gate 15.
Profiteer is one of 2 runners the market is coming for. He has Gate 5. His run in the Todman was good but he over raced and was grabbed by Anamoe on the line.
Artorious won the Blue Diamond Stakes where the blinkers were applied, and it worked a treat.
Godolphin suit up Ingratiating and Anamoe who ran second and third respectively in the Blue Diamond. Anamoe took out the Todman in his last start two weeks ago.
Home Affairs has a case debuting in the Canonbury running second then winning the Silver Slipper. Both of those runs were on Soft 7 tracks over the 1100m. He ran third in the Todman.
Stay Inside is the other runner the market wants. He ran fourth in the Todman but found trouble, only finding room at the 200m. His run prior was a win in the Pierro by 4 lengths on a Soft 7. If they’re running on by this race, he’ll be hard to beat from the back of the field.
Four Moves Ahead is unbeaten from both her runs which have been on wet tracks. Her debut was a 4 length win where she was dominant. That was on a Heavy 8. Her last start she took out the Embrace on a Soft 6.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 8 Stay Inside. He’s drawn Gate 3 and will sit right up on the speed. His asset is his turn of foot and if things go his way in the run, look out. ___________________________________________________________________
RACE 8. GROUP 1 THE GALAXY OVER 1100M FOR THE 3YO’S
We round out the last of the 5 Group 1’s here.
One addition to this week’s field is Danny O’Brien trained Order Of Command. Craig Williams to take the ride.
Plenty of speed here. Jonker and Fabergino from Gates 2 and 3 respectively will dictate. Then we have Eduardo, Tailleur, Haut Brion Her, Jungle Edge and Wild Ruler from Gates 5-9. The Oydessey from Gate 13 will also look to set the pace.
Eduardo pipped Nature Strip when resuming to take out the Challenge Stakes. Draws a little wider here than that start. Impressive record at the track, distance, second up and wet tracks.
Fabergino has recorded 3 wins from her last 4 runs with a fourth in the Lighting Stakes her only blemish in this streak. She only finished 2.5 lengths behind Nature Strip in that run.
How many Group 1’s will Chris Waller and James McDonald combine for in this meeting? They partner up here with Haunt Brion Her who is a gun first up which she is here. Her first up run last prep was a win in the Sheraco were she nearly beat the track record at this track over 1100m. Her last run was on a Heavy 9 running second behind Gytrash in the Winners. Has only missed the cash twice in her 12 career starts. The Snowdens will send out Wild Ruler who has won three of his last four runs including his last race upon resumption where he took out the Fireball Stakes. The query is the track. He’s only had one run on a rain affected ground.
Taillieur loves the wet ground. In her 8 career starts, she’s recorded 6 wins and two seconds. She’s unbeaten at Rosehill, three wins and a second from four at the trip. This is her biggest test but she definitely has the ability to win this, especially on these track conditions. Gets in at 51kg.
The inclusion of Order Of Command cannot be ignored. He’s only missed the quinella once in his last 5 runs. That run was in the Schillaci at Caulfield. He resumed this prep running third in the McCarten. Second up is his go with four wins from seven and he does his best work on a rain affected tracks with five wins from ten on soft. This is his first go on heavy and gets in beautifully at the weights. The gate (Gate 11) and the class of opposition he faces here is the query.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 12 Tallieur. Even though she remains at 51kg and is disadvantaged with the change in weights, she looks to get a great map here from Gate 6. I’d be more confident if we’re still on a Heavy ground. Haunt Brion Her from Gate 7 is a massive danger with the first up form and the soft track record. ____________________________________________________________________
RACE 9 GROUP 3 EPONA STAKES OVER 1900M FOR THE 3YO’S FILLIES AND MARES
Speed in the last to be set by Vulpine. She drew Gate 1 last week. Gate 16 tomorrow but she’s got genuine speed. Every Rose from Gate 7 will press forward too. Written Beauty and Emanate can push in behind the leading pair.
Vulpine comes into this race a last start winner taking out the Wenona Girl Quality where she held off Seasons. Her previous run was a second in a BM78 behind Andermatt.
Every Rose began this prep taking out the Lightfinger Stakes then led in the Surround where she faded. Back to the 1200m suits. She also comes through Dame Giselle, Anders and Farnan form lines.
The red-hot form runner is Written Beauty who boasts five wins from seven runs. She hit trouble in her last start which was the Challenge Stakes. The big query is how will she handle the wet track. Her only win on rain affected ground was on a Soft 5.
Emanate comes into her second run at Black Type level after running a 3rd in the Wenona Girl. She has a great record at the 1200m distance and on rain affected tracks.
Seasons can win after running second in the Wenona Girl. The 1200m trip is her pet distance with 11 of her 16 career starts at the trip boasting four wins and three placings. She’s effective on wet ground.
Jen Rules has the second up record and needs to be respected also.
Wayupinthesky hasn’t missed the quinella in two goes on heavy ground. She ran a good race when resuming in her last start in Canberra but had no luck to finish second. She draws an ideal gate with a good map and does her best second up.
We’ve also got a genuine wet tracker who have been accepted in the mix. That’s Wandabaa. She was backed to win the McCarten two weeks ago where she was going in unbeaten first up from 3 campaigns. She ran fourth. She has a lot of ticks coming into this race. Form lines around races won by Savatiano, Positive Peace (where Wandabaa ran second on a Heavy 8 over 1200m in the Nivison) and All Saints Eve. She’s a 1200m horse who loves the wet tracks and boasts two wins from three second up. Gate 17 and the map are the queries.
ON TOP SELECTION – No 2 Tricky Gal. She ran second to Tailleur in the Triscay and second to Krone in the Guy Walter. Krone won the Group 1 Coolmore and Tailleur is one of the favourites for The Galaxy. The big jump in weight is a query but Gate 6 and the map suggests she’s in with a massive chance. ___________________________________________________________________
