DOOM OCT 24 - MILITARY ROSE SALUTES ON DEBUT

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Doomben, October 24, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True.
2yo QTIS 600 Handicap - 1010m. Time: 58.66.
1 Military Rose; 2 Starstreamed; 3 Devinardi.

The Gillian Heinrich trained Military Rose dominated both the betting and the race itself. The filly started at the prohibitive odds of $1.70 and won by 1.50 lengths.

Colour Blue set the early target. She was only there because jockey Glen Colless was happy to keep Military Rose back in second spot early. Given more rein on straightening, Military Rose cruised to the front early in the straight. Her only worry then was whether anybody had the strength to come after her.

Starstreamed, who had raced in midfield early, made a gallant effort to do just that, running on down the outside, but, while he was clearly second best on the day, he did not have the firepower to mix it with Military Rose who romped in to a comfortable, eye-catching debut win.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Gillian Heinrich: “In her trial she got to the front, just sat there, won by four and he had a hold on her. She didn’t jump today ... or rather jumped alright, but was just a little slow to get going, but then her ability came through which was good. Missing the kick and having to work her along a little bit might not have suited her either but, anyway, she’s got the job done. I think you’ll find she is quite a smart filly.

“What I’ll do is I’ll take her to the beach for a couple of weeks now ... give her a let-up. Get her ready. Two weeks before the Magic Millions there is a two-year-old race. She can go into that and then on to the Magic Millions. Hopefully we can hold her together.”

Jockey Glen Colless: “I rode her in two trials and she was a little bit tardy out in both of them as well. I said to Gillian (Heinrich), don’t worry about her. She’s just sort of got that natural speed. Once she gets into her gears ... it probably takes about fifty yards ... and she gets going. She’s not very big, but there is a bit of a motor there, you know.

“She did respond well at the end. When she heard that other one (Starstreamed) coming she started to knuckle down. She was just a little bit starry when she got there. We haven’t done much with her in the trials. That’s probably the first time she’s been off the bit so it was a good effort.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Military Rose): 1.70 steady.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Tough Luck (M. Hellyer) and Starstreamed (B. Pengelly) were a little slow to begin. Military Rose (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly. Wild Promises (B. Stewart) jumped inwards at the start, making contact with Brodenbri (R. McMahon), resulting in Brodenbri (R. McMahon) shifting in, tightening the running of Tough Luck (M. Hellyer), which had to be steadied. Shortly after the start, Brodenbri laid in, resulting in Starstreamed having to be steadied from the heels of Brodenbri. Colour Blue (P. Hammersley) laid out rounding the home turn.

B. Pengelly, rider of Starstreamed, reported that the horse was a little slowly away and shortly after the start he was compelled to take hold of his mount when Brodenbri shifted in forward of him. B. Pengelly added that the horse over-raced rounding the first turn and in the straight he was unable to ride the horse out as he normally would due to its tendency to shift outwards.
