DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 24 APRIL 2021
This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN with the track rated “SOFT” and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track will probably get an upgrade as the weather is favourable for the rest of the week.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Warrior Hero (5) makes the trek north to Queensland for the Freedman brothers based in Sydney. Jim Byrne will ride for the lads. This Snitzel colt I thought made a solid debut on a heavy track at Kensington a month ago. The run was great. I think that the heavy track probably inhibited him winning on debut. Back to a firm surface this weekend at Doomben I think he is a serious contender here.
Everlast (7) resumes from the Chris Munce Racing team after a debut run back in October. The recent trial probably would suggest that he may need the run – but I think that he may run well here on race day.
Alert and Ready (6) is trained by Kevin Kemp in Toowoomba and won recently on her home track at Toowoomba. She has always threatened to do something. I just wonder now she has got past the post first that she may continue and post consecutive wins. There is a bonus with a 3-kilogram claim for Madeleine Wishart who rides her.
Bulloo (13) won on debut at her home track at the Sunshine Coast for Stuart Kendrick. She settled off the speed and powered home late to put the opposition to the sword. She looked like she had plenty of improvement left in her – Michael Rodd takes the ride this weekend.
Helen Page has Du Maurier (8) in the race – a Sebring filly who won at the Gold Coast last time out. She is another that has shown some ability in her first preparation and could continue her winning form here with Scott Galloway to ride.
A strong watch on the Kelly Schweida trained first starter here – Star Gamble (10) to be ridden by the Group 1 Sydney Cup winning jockey and great bloke Ronnie Stewart. How good was it to see him win that race last weekend on the Chris Waller trained Selino! This colt has been trialling well and should not be overlooked – barrier 14 is my only concern – otherwise he would have made it into one of my top three selections.
Selections:
5 – Warrior Hero 7 – Everlast 13 – Bulloo 6 – Alert and Ready Rough chances – (8) Du Maurier & (10) Star Gamble
Race 2
YAWN – it’s one of those infamous distance races to start off the early Quaddie this week!
I have gone for the Tony Gollan trained Seeingisbelieving (6) again to be ridden by Jim Byrne. Fourth up here this weekend, he steps up to 2200metres for the first time in his career, but his last start just seemed to indicate to me that he was working home so well that he will get the distance and will race handy. Maybe I am wrong, however, I would rather back something that looks progressive rather than select these others who keep going around each week.
The top weight Humbolt Current (1) from Chris Waller Racing goes up in weight, but Justin Huxtable takes a claim which gets him nicely into the race. He is riding in wonderful form of late and his strong vigorous riding style will suit this runner late in a driving or close finish.
His stable mate is Stardome (7) who is up in class and down in the weights sharply and will be partnered by Mark Du Plessis. Again, I think that this gelding doesn’t like carrying big weights and despite the rise in class I think that the weight relief will play a major factor in his chances this weekend. He loves these longer distances and will thrive.
Ben Thompson rides Seat Of Power (3) for Gary Duncan again this weekend after they won a fortnight ago here over 2020 metres when he led all the way and could not be run down. The rail out may see leaders have a distance advantage this weekend – if there is any bias, he may prove difficulty to run down. Just some concern with the step up in distance and the sharp increase in the weight he must carry. He was well backed last time out.
Selections:
6 – Seeingisbelieving 7 – Stardome 1 – Humbolt Current 3 – Seat of Power Rough chance – (4) Sir Barnabus
Race 3
This is a tough race over the mile. Multiple chances – watch the market closer to race time to see what they come for!
Maybe a safe way home here could be the Desleigh Forster trained Racing Paradise (9) who won a fortnight ago at Eagle Farm. Mark Du Plessis stays aboard for the stable. He was good winning that race and his previous effort a few days before at Doomben was good enough to suggest that, with the small break he has had, he may show up here.
Chevychaser (11) is trained by the veteran Brian Smith. A solid winner last time out on a heavy track here three weeks ago. Will probably lead this lot with no weight on his back and Andrew Spinks to take the ride.
Kevin Kemp has Dreamtimer (4) in the race with Madeleine Wishart riding again. Not sure what went wrong last start after a very good win the start prior at Eagle Farm – there must have been excuses! Maybe the class rise caught him out and now back in grade this weekend he will be thereabouts. I think the other advantage will be that he will not have to take up the running this weekend with some speed engaged in the race. Madeleine can probably let them go and race three pairs back and then thunder home late.
David Vandyke has Bering Sea (4) in the race with Leah Kilner in the saddle. It may be a battle supreme with the two female apprentices going at it over the final stages if this runner can find his best form.
Selections:
9– Racing Paradise 11 – Chevychaser 4 – Dreamtimer 2 – Bering Sea
Race 4
A No Metro Win race here. Again, these races are not getting any easier!
Tramonto (14) is trained by Jonny Field and resumed from a short let up at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago and got the chocolates. Taylor Marshall will ride him this weekend for the stable. He is nicely drawn and will race in behind the speed – I think he is a solid each way gamble.
Purroni (11) resumes here for the Tony Gollan Racing team with Jim Byrne to ride. This mare has always shown ability and her recent trial would suggest that she may run a bold race first up. She is drawn well and always races well fresh.
Starvirgo (2) from the Robert Heathcote Racing team is another runner who gets into this race superbly. With a solid barrier trial in the lead up to the run here this weekend, he has Ben Thompson aboard and to be fair he has met better opposition than this last preparation. He could land the prize at good odds.
Tardis (7) is from the Edward O’Rourke stables at Murwillumbah. She was great working home behind the impressive Fender last start – that form again gives her a good chance here. Jake Bayliss retains the ride.
Exclusive (1) provides me with exactly that! An exclusive – great to see Kirk Matheson back in town! He is a very underrated rider and aboard this $25 chance for NSW trainer Stephen Bennett he gets his opportunity to post a win at Doomben!
Holy Command (4) is trained at Tamworth by Cody Morgan who seems to have mastered his hit and run missions to QLD with his runners over recent months. Andrew Mallyon rides the gelding who resumed with a win on his home track three weeks ago. Respect this runner – especially if the money comes for him on race day!
Selections:
11 – Purroni 2 – Starvirgo 14 – Tramonto 7 – Tardis Rough chances – (1) Exclusive & (4) Holy Command
Race 5
The Tails Stakes under Quality conditions over the mile here. Nice race.
Walking Flying (7) has posted wins at her past two starts for Edmonds Racing – each time Robbie Fradd rode her. She seems to have found a purple patch of form since coming to Queensland and I hope she can continue that winning form this weekend.
Some of the other runners’ chances will depend on the tempo of the race and if there is speed on here. If Supergiant (8) jumps and rolls forward and puts some genuine tempo into the race, horses like Cellarmaid (10) and the Queensland favourite The Candy Man (3) may come right into contention. However, if there is no speed these two may struggle. I am thinking from the nice barrier Jake Bayliss may push forward on Supergiant (8) and lead them (here is hoping!).
If the speed is on, I am happy with the first up effort of Cellarmaid (10) trained by Kelly Schweida. She was drawn wide on that occasion and went back and then made some ground late – second up here with Taylor Marshall retaining the mount, I give her a great chance at around $15.
The Candy Man (3) is back in QLD after a journey to Victoria. Baylee Nothdurft rides the big grey this weekend for Barry Baldwin. He does have a superb record here at Doomben and each time I leave him out or say he cannot win – guess what, he wins, and I end up with egg on my face!
Barefoot (6) won here last start surging to the line under strong riding from Ben Thompson for the Sears Racing stable. I think that on that occasion he had the race run to suit – he may not get those conditions here this weekend.
Selections:
7 – Walking Flying 10 – Cellarmaid 3 – The Candy Man 6 – Barefoot Rough chance – (8) Supergiant
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie this weekend. A nice race – the Princess Stakes for three-year-old fillies at Listed level.
At the set weight conditions Tycoon Evie (1) gets in well against her opposition. The win last start across the road at Eagle Farm was impressive to say the least. Rex Lipp trains her and she looks like she could measure up in the upcoming Winter Carnival if he can keep her ticking over. Mark Du Plessis stays aboard this weekend.
There are several runners coming north after runs in Sydney – these runners new to QLD may cause an upset to the favourite.
Force of Will (4) is a New Zealand runner who stepped out last start in the Group 1 Vinery Stud at Rosehill over 2000 metres – she failed. I think that she wants a mile only. Then again you assess her form all her wins have been on wet ground, so is she a mudlark? Doesn’t matter the class drop and her record at the mile speaks for herself and Michael Rodd will ensure she gets a nice run. She will settle back and make a run late.
Good Soize (2) resumes here for Gollan Racing. I think that she is headed towards the QLD Oaks on the first weekend in June. She will probably need the run, but I am keeping her safe as she has put up some blistering efforts in the past when she races fresh.
Chris Waller Racing has sent a few runners north looking to get some black type against their names. I like the longer priced runner of them Easifar (6) who will be ridden by Luke Dittman. She raced in the Group 3 Adrian Knox last time out. Again, I think she may have struggled on the wet track at Randwick and the distance. Back to the mile and drawn well in barrier 1, I expect her to be in the leading brigade. Watch for an improved effort this weekend.
Selections:
1 – Tycoon Evie 4 – Force of Will 6 – Easifar 2 – Good Soize
Race 7
The first leg of the treble here. A sprint over 1110 metres.
There are a few serial offenders and pretenders in this race as well. The race has been decimated with early withdrawals.
Maozi (9) and Royal Witness (2) are trained by Toby & Trent Edmonds – both have genuine chances.
I like Maozi (9) first up from barrier 1. She won a recent trial at the Gold Coast and she performed so well last preparation in good company. I was concerned at first with the large field as she gets back, needs luck and comes home late. I think that with several runners already scratched she should be very competitive.
The stable mate Royal Witness (2) had no luck last start being caught wide and still battled on well over the concluding stages. This weekend Justin Huxtable has the ride and his claim will enhance his chances.
Gee Tee Tee (12) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted with Ben Thompson to ride. He too resumes here, and, on his efforts last preparation, it would suggest that he is right on this race from barrier 6.
Howwonderfullifeis (8) will be ridden by Leah Kilner this weekend for Tony Gollan. Her three-kilogram claim gets this mare in very well. She races best here at Doomben and $21 is seriously ridiculous odds for her in this race. She has drawn well too!
Selections:
9 – Maozi 12 – Gee Tee Tee 8 – Howwonderfullifeis 2 – Royal Witness
Race 8 TAB MICK DITTMAN PLATE (Listed)
Another wonderful race on the program. With set weights some runners do get a distinct advantage.
There is some serious speed here as well – I am looking for something to come from midfield or the rear and swamp them late.
Can the locally trained Simply Fly (1) from Rex Lipp’s stables hold off the southern invaders this weekend – that is the big question! Stephanie Thornton was aboard last time and she just missed getting this gelding home in the final stride with a massive weight. The tables turn this weekend with the set weights, and he gets in well.
A NSW runner is the Mark Newnham trained Lord Olympus (3) who has had a four-week let up after racing in the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed) at Rosehill. I think that he will be better over a shorter distance rather than 1200 metres – I may be proven wrong - but he was very impressive in a recent trial win at Warwick Farm. Michael Cahill is in the saddle for the stable and his patience and soft hands should see him get a cosy run from an awful barrier – barrier 11. If he can get him in, watch out for this runner.
James Cummings trains Andermatt (4) who has the addition of blinkers this weekend – Ryan Maloney to ride. He comes out of the Darby Munro Stakes (Listed) at Rosehill as well. I am just concerned that all his best runs have been on heavy tracks. He may be a genuine mudlark that may find suitable conditions over the coming month if he stays in QLD. He was not tested in a recent trial – could run well fresh.
Kisukano (9) another local talent from the Michael Nolan Racing team – no luck with the barrier draw – may struggle from out there.
Edmonds Racing has Paredo (14) resuming here. Her toughest assignment in her career to date. She races well fresh, loves Doomben and has drawn well. With the speed on she could find a place at a big price – Ben Thompson to ride.
Selections:
1 – Simply Fly 3 – Lord Olympus 4 – Andermatt 9 - Kisukano Rough chance - (14) Paredo
Race 9
The last race – an extremely competitive field.
Seems like I had better head down to the bottom of the race list for this race.
I am going for the Robert Heathcote trained East Asia (19) to win the last race. She debuted for the stable over 1200 metres and stormed home. This week she steps up to 1350 metres and, although she is an emergency, I hope she makes the field this weekend. Regardless, I will be following her as I think as she gets up in distance especially around a mile, we will see the best of her. I hope there are a few scratchings so she can sneak in.
Then you have the David Vandyke trained Skins (15) who resumed with a striking win and since has had a three week freshen up. He is undefeated second up, has Ryan Maloney in the saddle and drawn well in barrier 1. I can see why the punters have unloaded on him since the markets have opened. There is no knock from me on his chances – I just want to tip something at longer odds!
Gem of Scotland (8) raced home strongly last time out to be narrowly defeated. She is trained by Rex Lipp and has never been out of the money third up. Stephanie Thornton does have a habit of winning the last race on the program so she may get a winner here!
Despite the massive weight Flash Aah (1) raced home powerfully last weekend in the Listed Ascot over 1000 metres – a totally unsuitable distance. He gets back to a more suitable distance this weekend and the 3-kilogram claim for Madeleine Wishart and the good barrier draw brings him into calculations.
There are several other horses that could do okay here. Love Struck (4) – but the wide barrier draw will see him need some luck from out there. Royal Hale (6) - working nicely into some form and must be respected. She Za Boss (10) – something went wrong for mine at Eagle Farm last start and her win prior to that brings her into contention in this race.
As you can see a difficult way to finish off the day – anything could win – so let’s play wide and see what happens.
Selections:
19 – East Asia 15 - Skins 8 – Gem of Scotland 1 – Flash Aah
Rough chance – (4) Love Struck, (6) Royal Hale, (10) She Za Boss. ____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
It is a short priced favourite Jim Byrne to win this weekend – a rough chance to Mark Du Plessis. It may all come back to scratchings once the final track condition and what horses go around.

WINNO V FLEMO
WINNO got FLEMO in our tipping competition last weekend – only by $0.80 cents – these battles have been close in recent wins.
As for my Bulldogs – they are terrible.
