TONY GOLLAN TICKS OFF THE ONE HUNDRED BRISBANE METRO WINNERS BOX IN STYLE

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, July 14, 2021

Tony Gollan, the multiple Brisbane Trainer’s Premiership winner, ticked off another very satisfying box when the two-year-old, I Am Invincible colt Brentwood brought up the top trainer’s hundredth metropolitan winner for the season in Brisbane when winning impressively on debut at Doomben.

Gollan had gone into the day on ninety-eight winners but there was no ‘nervous nineties’ here as the stable quickly clicked that score up to ninety-nine when another first-timer, Self Indulgent, took out the opening event on the card by a decisive 4.785 length margin … and then Brentwood saluted in the third race to bring up that very special ‘100’ total.

Both of these Gollan debut winners are ones for the notebook.

Self Indulgent might have benefitted from the late scratching of the short-priced favourite Finnicky at the starting gates, but the Foxwedge filly went out and made the race her own in no uncertain terms.

She raced into a clear lead early and, with Georgina Cartwright rating her to perfection, Self Indulgent dictated the course of events until the turn before stretching out on straightening and racing right away from the opposition to score in style.

For his part, Brentwood sat just off the speed in the early part, getting the run of the race in third on the rail, before switching out marginally in the home straight and proceeding to run down the then leader Richunclemoneybags in a measured manner which carried him 1.30 lengths clear at the line.

The powerful Gollan stable will once again take out the Brisbane trainers’ Premiership for the 2020/21 racing season which makes it the eighth straight season that Gollan has won the Premiership.

Last season was his best return with a record 108.5 winners with a winning strike rate of 16.9%

Given that there are four Metropolitan meeting left to go after today, it is not inconceivable that Gollan will either match, or better, that total by the end of the season.
