WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, AUGUST 21, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 20, 2021
Eagle Farm this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 7 metres for the entire circuit.
Over the past few meetings here have seen most winners come from on the speed or not too far back – with back markers struggling to make any ground late in races. Maybe see how the first few races play out to see what runners you should be backing?
I think I will go for horses racing on the speed and keep my fingers crossed!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The Steve Tregea winning success train keeps on going.
A quick back up for Champagne Aunty (5) after a very good win last weekend. Larry Cassidy was missing at poker on Tuesday night so has probably been working out how to keep his winning record aboard alive – he has won his past two aboard this mare. She is a short-priced favourite to take out the first race and deserves to be that price on her showing in her recent victories.
I think there may be some cream in Milk Man (2) winning here as well. He is second up here for NSW trainer Matthew Smith and jockey Brad Stewart – could be one to watch if they back this one.
Selections:
5 – Champagne Aunty 2 – Milk Man 1 – Stardome 7 – Flensburg
Race 2
The first leg of the Early Quaddie is over 2206 metres.
Gone for some value here with the Kris Lee Racing runner Fu Ni (8) who makes her debut in QLD. She has been running on wet tracks in her past three starts – I think on top of the ground with a 3-kilogram claim for Leah Kilner she looks ideally placed in this race. She should race probably fourth in the running, and be handy when they make their claim in the straight.
Top Order (2) worked home nicely last time out at Doomben for trainer Kim Anderson. Taylor Marshall retains the ride on this runner. Just hope that he pushes forward this weekend and races handy.
Head Up High (4) won last time out leading all the way at Ipswich. Baylee Nothdurft rode him to victory on that day for Matthew Dunn – they stay together and look likely to roll forward again from barrier 8 – he could take some catching if he gets an easy time in the lead.
Selections:
8 – Fu Ni 2 – Top Order 4 – Head Up High 5 – Zawadi
Race 3
The Stephen Lee trains Lasting Kiss (4) has won her past two starts and so is looking for a hat trick of wins. There is some speed in the race, and I think that she can be ridden in behind the speed by Stephanie Thornton and run the leaders down late.
Undeniable (6) is trained by Matthew Smith and will be ridden by apprentice Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) who claims 3 kilograms off her back. She did run a super race here two starts ago when beaten in a blanket finish before heading back to NSW and putting in a solid effort at Hawkesbury. She will need some luck – but I think she is well placed with the claim.
Wicked Wench (10) and Palasczczuk (9) – I suppose I should not make mention of them in the same sentence – but they do look like the likely place getters.
Selections:
4 – Lasting Kiss 6 – Undeniable 10 – Wicked Wench 9 – Palasczczuk
Race 4
Gollan Racing has Rock Amore (2) and Vinco (3) in this race.
Rock Amore (2) led and won here last time out with Leah Kilner in the saddle. I really cannot see why they will not adopt the same tactics again here and prove difficult to beat again.
Exclusive (1) is an interesting runner who has been transferred to the Lee Freedman stables on the Gold Coast. His last run was in the Grafton Ramornie. He drops back in class and has a massive weight to carry, however, they have gone for a claim with KWT to ride. This gelding has a strong race record with 8 wins from 28 starts. I really think he gets in well here and has the important gear changes of bandages and blinkers coming off and winkers going on. With around $8 on offer I think he is great each way value.
If you want to play extra wide make sure you have something on The Dark (8) who is around $20. He comes back after an 11 week freshen up – he can race well fresh and does love this track – I sense a big result for the bookies in this race!
Selections:
2 – Rock Amore 1 – Exclusive 3 – Vinco 8 – The Dark
Race 5
The two early market favourites – who have been well supported – I think are suspect here.
Mccovey Cove (3) and Whozyadeeler (9) both have been well backed in the early markets. They come from stables who put their money with their mouths are as well – David Vandyke and Tony Gollan respectively – but I say they are sus – so I go looking for some value!
Chris Munce and Jaden Lloyd combine here with Kavak (2). Last time at Doomben he led easily and was run down late. I expect him to lead again here this weekend and he could take a power of beating if left alone with some cheap sectionals.
If he does get challenged, I like the country runner Go Wandji (6) who is trained by Tom Dougall who has won all three career starts. Sure, he come to town and Saturday grade for the first time, but I think he will race handy and has a very strong finish. I suppose the highlight for me is seeing Jackson “McLovin” Murphy riding in town at a Saturday meeting. He is a good jockey who like many of late are struggling to get rides in town – he will give this runner every chance – GO GET THEM “MC LOVIN!”.
Selections:
2 – Kavak 6 – Go Wandji 9 – Whozyadeeler 3 – Mccovey Cove
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie.
Release The Beans (1) has won his past two starts with Luke Dittman aboard. On both occasions he has stalked the leader and then pounced late and gone away to lead. He gets the same situation this weekend from his likely hardest to beat Jumbo Goal (2) who will lead this lot. Can the Rob Heathcote Racing runner get a hat trick – he certainly is good enough, but I am just worried about the weight he must carry this weekend.
Jumbo Goal (2) is trained by John Moore and has Jaden Lloyd riding. These two combined last weekend with Samurai to get Moore’s first metro Saturday winner in town. This runner has had a three week freshen up. I am not sure what went wrong last time out, but this weekend I would expect him to jump and, with the 3-kilogram claim for Lloyd, try and run the opposition into the ground from barrier 9.
Queens Pier (6) is a Gollan Racing runner, down in weights, who posted a maiden win last time out at Ipswich. Robbie Fradd rides again and the three weeks between runs would suggest that she could race well again here.
Selections:
2 – Jumbo Goal 1 – Release The Beans 6 – Queens Pier 7 – Rockin Artie
Race 7
First leg of the treble.
Barry Baldwin trains Adelase (8) who will be ridden by Mark Du Plessis. Has won her past two starts across the road at Doomben – but has also raced well here previously. There is some speed in the race, and I expect that she will tuck in behind them before coming out and challenging as she did last time when she won.
Baanone (9) is a Sears Racing runner who was working home well late last time. He got too far back last time out in a day when runners on the speed dominated. If he can race a little handier in this small field, he gets his chance to post a win.
Best of the other runners are the likely pacesetters Seeingisbelieving (3) and Word For Word (4).
Selections:
8 – Adelase 9 – Baanone 3 – Seeingisbelieving 4 – Word For Word
Race 8
A race over 1000 metres.
So Clever (11) trained gives John Moore another chance of a winner on this program – could he train his first Saturday weekend double this weekend? It would be a tremendous effort if he can achieve this! His record-breaking efforts as a trainer in Hong Kong would suggest that he can – but you must remember his stables on the Gold Coast are relatively new and he is still building up a nice stable and cliental. This runners past two efforts over 1200 metres has been admirable – however, he has been found wanting late. If he can jump cleanly and get to sit in behind the likely leader Charlie Sphene (11) he should take a power of beating. Again, Jaden Lloyd has the ride, and the gelding will only carry 51 kilograms with his claim – should be no excuses this weekend.
Mark Currie pulled a rabbit out of his hat last weekend here winning the last race. He has Je Suis Belle (5) engaged third up here. Taylor Marshall rode that winner last weekend and has the duties on this runner this weekend. I would highlight that this runner is undefeated third up and excels at this distance. A super price of $8 is on offer – I will be saving on him for sure.
Boblee (2) from the David Vandyke stable goes well too over 1000 metres. Michael “Muppy” Hellyer rides him and has a nice record aboard this gelding who has had a four week freshen up – could sprint well.
Selections:
11 – So Clever 5 – Je Suis Belle 2 – Boblee 4 – The Egyptian
Race 9
The last race of the day is over 1000 metres.
Team Gollan Racing has a strong hand here with three runners. There is a mountain of speed in this race as well.
I like Pizonie (1) – with some reservations as he will get back and fly home, so that goes against probably the racing pattern if they are winning in front. I just feel that with the speed in the race he will get a nice trail into the race. Ryan Maloney rides this runner who resumes after a 15-week break. He did have a solid hit out in a recent trial and showed that he is on track for a nice first up effort going to the line with plenty in reserve.
The stable mate Howwonderfullifeis (11) is down in weights and resumes as well from a 14 week spell – has won a recent trial easily and the winkers go on as does Stephanie Thornton who has a habit of winning the last race on a program. He is $14 in some markets and looks tremendous value.
Le Palmier (9) is the other Gollan runner who also resumes after a 14-week spell. He raced well in a recent trial when beaten easily by Rothfire. I think that this runner normally goes better second up – so I will be having a look at him in the parade ring this weekend – but note – he has been well supported since the markets have opened.
John Shelton from Grafton brings Jule’s Spirit (5) to town. He won the time-honoured Kirby on Grafton Cup day six weeks ago in a powerful display surging to the line late. Leah Kilner is aboard, and her claim is invaluable to him getting in nicely in this race. Make no doubt Shelton is a master of setting one for a win and pulling of a betting plunge – if they come for this runner – follow the money!
Selections:
1 – Pizonie 11 – Howwonderfullifeis 5 – Jule’s Spirit 2 – You Make Me Smile
Rough chance – (9) Le Palmier ____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
Tough field this weekend – looks like it is a battle of the apprentices between Leah Kilner, Jaden Lloyd and Kyle Wilson-Taylor this weekend. It is going to be an interesting battle royale in the 2021/22 season to see which apprentice reigns supreme. This weekend I think Jaden Lloyd may just get the chocolates.
