BLACK SEA AND ZAWADI KEEP THE PAUL JENKINS RACING STABLE IN THE FRAME

By Graham Potter | Saturday, August 21, 2021

Black Sea almost made it debut win for the Paul Jenkins stable but ultimately had to settle for second place behind Heart Vandelay in a BM 58 Handicap over 1050m at Kilcoy on August 8.

This was the son of Denman’s first outing since joining the Jenkins yard from the Alex Rae stable, for whom he was a three-time winner from thirty-four starts.

Black Sea raced in the second half of the field early on, but was never too far off the speed and when he made a quick forward move in the sweep to the home turn he looked to be right in the race.

That he was and he chased hard down the home stretch and was competitive all of the way to the line, but he just failed to reel in Heart Vandelay to go down by 0.20 lengths.

Black Sea arguably did have an excuse as this extract from the official stewards’ report suggests.

‘Black Sea– Shifted in rounding the home turn and made contact with Heart Vandelay. Rider A Thompson lost the use of his nearside rein and whip over the concluding stages. Correct weight was delayed when the 2nd placegetter, Jockey A Thompson requested to view the patrol films to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge a protest against the 1st placegetter Heart Vandelay (J Murphy). After viewing the films, A Thompson advised that he did not wish to proceed with the protest. And Stewards declared correct weight on the Judges placings.

The six-year-old gelding Zawadi’s form continues to hold a pleasing level of consistency with his latest effort, a third place finish in a BM72 over 2206m at Eagle Farm at a metropolitan Saturday meeting being particularly encouraging.

The Paul Jenkins trained son of Guillotine finished 1.35 lengths behind the winner Top Order there. Couple that with the fact that, although coming home on the fringe of the placings, Zawadi finished less than a length behind the winner in both of his previous two starts … in a Class 3 Plate at Eagle Farm when a close-up 0.30 lengths behind Sokudo over 1850m and then just 0.90 lengths behind Heirborn a BM70 Handicap over 2030m at Doomben and there is plenty in the plus column.
