NEVER IN DOUBT – THE KEWESS STRIKES AGAIN
By Graham Potter | Sunday, August 29, 2021
The Kewess, a powerfully built chestnut colt trained by Melissa Taylor, took no prisoners in a BM65 Handicap over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast on August 29.
The betting indicated it would be a three horse race between The Kewess and You’ll Be Mist (both at $3.40) and Veta Velocita ($3.70) and, while these runners did fill the first three places, the anticipated close contest did not materialise as The Kewess was clearly superior in all stages of the race when cementing a clear-cut 1.80 length victory.
Jockey Jimmy Orman took the three-year-old son of Super One into the lead early and The Kewess set his own tempo holding a useful two length lead until the turn.
There was no letting up on the part of The Kewess on straightening. You’ll Be Mist, who had saved ground on the turn, momentarily did look like he could improve to challenge The Kewess approaching the 200m mark, but You’ll Be Mist’s hopes were quickly dashed by The Kewess’s resolute gallop which saw him go to the line without ever seriously being troubled by any of the opposition.
The fact that it was a full four lengths back to the third placed Veta Velocita underlined the impressive nature of the win.
Jimmy Orman, who is fast becoming an important part of the Taylor team … he has now won on all of The Kewess, Kudo and Mob Buster for the stable … gave his insight into the win and the way the stable is going.
“I thought I might be a little bit further back to be honest,” said Orman, “but Melissa said to be positive. I was lucky I was on the best horse in the race, I thought, and once I took up a good spot and knew we would take some beating.
“Melissa Taylor is a good trainer. Her and her partner (Dale Smith) do a great job. They are lovely people to ride for. They are easy going … and you can tell they do their form, because we’ve both sort of got the same plans when we go out there, so we work well as a team.
“It’s not easy to train winners. They are doing a very good job at that.
‘Even away from the results, her horses are turned out great. They all look good. She certainly what she is doing in that respect.
“We’re going well together. Let’s hope it can continue.”
The Kewess is lightly raced, having only run four times for two wins and a third placing, as well as that highly creditable fifth place finish behind Alpine Edge in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes back in December.
