WINNABA MAKES NO MISTAKE. SCORES A DESERVED WIN
By Graham Potter | Saturday, September 11, 2021
Saturday September 11 saw the Tony and Maddysen Sears stable strike with Winneba in a Maiden Plate over 1000m at Toowoomba.
The result was just reward for the three-year-old daughter of Better Than Ready who had finished second in two of her three previous career starts. Both of those runner-up results (by 0.20 lengths and a one length margin) came over the 800m dash and she made no mistake when stepping up to the longer trip here.
Georgina Cartwright jumped Winneba (the $4.40 favourite) into an immediate lead and she rated the filly beautifully in the running when maintaining a comfortable leading margin to the turn.
Cartwright then agave Winneba more rein in the home straight and it quickly became clear that the win for Winneba was never in danger as she raced away to a clear-cut 2.30 length victory.
Winnaba now has a race record of one win and two runner-up finishes from only four starts. ___________________________________________________________________
The Sears stable had three other runners on the day who all filled minor placings.
Also at Toowoomba, Bangers And Mayo was denied a hat trick of wins when having to settle for third place behind Chocolatier in a BM75 Handicap over 1850m. Bangers And Majo was up near the lead and in contention for a large part of the race, but had to give best to Chocolatier and The Irons over the final 150m. The chestnut had won his two previous starts in a Class 3 Handicap over 1500m at Kilcoy and a BM70 Handicap over 1640m at Toowoomba. This was Bangers And Mayo’s first run beyond 1660m.
Lady Fey finished fourth in a Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap over 1300m. That result came on the back of successive runner-up finishes over 1050m and 1210m. Lady Fey jumped well before settling just better than midfield. She did move into a challenging position on the turn but then could do no more in the straight and had to settle for fourth place.
Imadgic finished second in a QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 1000m at Goondiwindi in her second career start. Imadgic was first-up here after the stable had taken then two-year-old daughter of Hidden Dragon straight to town on debut where she finished unplaced at Doomben behind Military Gambler in a Two-Year-Old Handicap over 1100m back on March 27.
