TRAINER DAVID MCCOLM - DOING A GREAT JOB FROM LIMITED OPPORTUNITIES

By Graham Potter | Friday, October 1, 2021

David McColm has been something of a quite achiever since returning to the training ranks, seldom garnering any headlines. By contrast though, his statistics loudly trumpet just how good a job he is doing from limited opportunities.

McColm, who has been in and out of the training over the years, has only had two individual runners to race since he had his first runner this time around in February … and from the ten runs between the two, the stable has saluted on no less than five occasions.

Our Rebel has just shaded his stable companion Far Too Easy on that winner’s list, winning three times from seven starts … while Far Two Easy has impressed with two wins from three starts.

When Our Rebel kicked off McColm’s run of success in a Maiden Handicap at Eagle Farm on March 10, the run caught a lot of punters out with Our Rebel getting up by a nostril at a starting price of $71. Not everybody missed out though as Our Rebel’s price had shortened from the opening call of $101.

Not surprisingly, Our Rebel started at $3.50 and $2.70 in his next two wins.

There was a similar trend with Far Too Easy who first came back at $26 before bookmakers and punters recalibrated the betting scales and returned him at a starting price of $4.80 in his second win. He has now won two races from only three career starts.

Clearly the McColm stable has been quick to earn its due respect after starting out in many people’s minds as something of an unknown quantity that needed to show something before being given a nod of approval.

Our Rebel will be looking to further the McColm cause at Doomben on Saturday where the four-year-old son of Dissident will line up in a Class 3 Plate over 1630m with Brad Stewart in the saddle.

No doubt, given McColm’s proven prowess at preparing and placing his horses, punters will be checking this one out very closely.
