WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 2, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 1, 2021
This weekend we are back at Doomben where the track is rated ‘soft’ and the rail is out 4.5 metres position for the entire circuit. The track is likely to get worse on Friday night. With that in mind it may be worth to consider runners who like wet ground.
The NRL Grand Final is on as well in Brisbane. I am going to go for Souths to get the victory. Both great teams – both from NSW – I cannot lose right? Oh – nearly forgot – how did the QLD teams go this year?
Short and sweet this weekend.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The two-year-old runners step out for the first time in the city -– a double whammy if the track is wet or heavy! Keep your eye on any market moves as we get closer to race time
I think the two recent trial winners at Doomben look solid here.
Palazzo Spirit (3), trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, will be ridden by Baylee Nothdurft. Solid trial win in good time looks above average.
Primed For Victory (4) won a trial too. The Chris Munce Racing trained son of Better Than Ready will be ridden by Justin Huxtable. He ran good time in his trial and looks like he will be tough to beat.
Honkytonk Diva (8) comes off a solid trial effort at the Sunshine Coast for Kelly Schweida Racing. Looked like she will train on after that hit out – Jim Byrne to ride.
Shalook (12) is a Kacy Fogden runner has a tongue tie going on for her debut run. Look for a solid run.
I must give a chance to the Sharryn Livingstone trained runner Thelwell (15) – I think this would be her first Saturday runner. Now I am not saying that WINNO is a good luck charm, but I have been present for her first and second winner as a trainer. Let us hope I can be there for her first Saturday city winner as well – Corey Bayliss has to carry me and my expectations with this Bel Espirit colt who has drawn nicely and has been trialling well. Good luck Sharryn!
Selections:
3– Palazzo Spirit 4 – Primed For Victory 8 – Honkytonk Diva 12 – Shalook Rough chance – (15) Thelwell
Race 2
An open affair this one – a no metro win race over 1350 metres.
Two weeks ago, Rebel Salute (2) was great here when narrowly beaten by Full Nelson. He has wonderful form at Doomben and has never been out of a place here in seven starts. Trained by Bryan and Daniel Guy on the Gold Coast and with Jimmy Orman to ride he should be difficult to hold out this week.
The Pines (3) is trained by Edmonds Racing and is now fourth up this weekend with Jaden Lloyd to ride. Lloyd’s 3 kilogram claim will be invaluable for her chances. She drops back sharply in class in this race from her recent starts – keep safe.
The Gollan Racing team are attempting to defend their Brisbane turf with two strong chances Big Bad Bruce (6) and Angus The Black (9) who will take on these Gold Coast trained runners. These two have both been solid in their latest efforts and should be respected.
Selections:
2 – Rebel Salute 3 – The Pines 6 – Big Bad Bruce 9 – Angus The Black Rough chance – (12) Triple Arrow
Race 3
A massive field over 1200 metres – tough race.
I like the Gillian Heinrich trained Deference (8) who resumed last time out for the stable at the Gold Coast and turned in a solid effort. I think that second up here and with Andrew Mallyon to ride she gets her chance to post a win for the new stable.
Ingear (11) won impressively first up and deserves to be favourite for the race. can see no reason why she can’t put another win on the board here this weekend. Ryan Maloney will ride her again and she will be out in front for a long time.
Contemptuous (3) resumed in good fashion in a midweek race for the Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted team. He has some solid form and the benefit of a 3 kilogram claim for Jaden Lloyd. Things look prosperous for this runner. if there is money for him in the lead up to the race, I would suggest you follow the confidence.
Platinum Euros (10) resumes here for Natalie McCall and can cause an upset if he is forward enough. He has three trials under his belt in preparation for his resumption here.
Selections:
8 – Deference 11 – Ingear 3 – Contemptuous 10 – Platinum Euros
Race 4
A distance race over 2030 metres.
I think we may see a form reversal this weekend with some genuine speed in the race and I think that this will benefit the Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted trained runner Ocean Treaty (10) who did not appreciate the muddling speed last time out on the Gold Coast.
Spanish Point (3) stormed home at good odds last time out on the Gold Coast. That striking finish would suggest that the Kris Lees trained runner will have no drama with the extra distance this weekend. Ryan Maloney keeps the ride.
Milk Man (2) has the visors going on again this weekend – he was good last time out finishing off the race nicely when narrowly beaten by London Banker. They have gone for the claim again this weekend with Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) to ride.
Keep your eye on the Chris Waller Racing trained Irish Sequel (9) to be ridden by Jim Byrne. Third up here and does thrive on wet tracks.
Selections:
10 – Ocean Treaty 3 – Spanish Point 2 – Milk Man 9 – Irish Sequel Rough chance (12) – Aswaat
Race 5
Difficult race over 1630 metres. It is an open affair – tough race for punters.
Taylor Marshall has been in career best form in recent weeks notching up several winners and he rides Makedon (7) here for Gary Duncan. The blinkers go on this weekend, and I think this gear change will get him home – oh yes and the urgings of Taylor Marshall.
Kubrick (2) the horse that looms ... and looms … but just doesn’t get the job done. Has not won in 100 weeks. Maybe Jim Byrne can lift him across the line this weekend and post a win for the large bunch of owners.
First Sun (6) has won both his career starts and turns up in town looking to keep his winning record intact for trainer Garnett Taylor. Ryan Wiggins has ridden him to his 2 previous victories and comes to Doomben to partner him again looking to post a winner.
Our Rebel (3) could show up here – keep your eye on this runner who will be ridden by Brad Stewart this week.
Selections:
7 – Makedon 2 – Kubrick 6 – First Son 3 – Our Rebel Rough chance (14) – Palaszczuk
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie this weekend – an open race over the 1630 metres.
Couldn’t Refuse (7) has the blinkers going on – maybe this is the secret third up for Desleigh Forster trained gelding who thrives at Doomben over the mile. Georgina Cartwright rides this weekend – a win for the girls for me.
Bentley Magic (9) seems to go well at Doomben. Went back in distance to 1400 metres last start on the Gold Coast – now back up to the mile – look for an improved effort.
Scottish Mist (11) and Green Jacket (10) both like this distance and Doomben – must be considered as well.
You can make a case for several runners here – a tough way to start the Quaddie.
Selections:
7 – Couldn’t Refuse 9 – Bentley Magic 11 – Scottish Mist 10 – Green Jacket Rough chance – (1) Run For Glory & (8) So Taken
Race 7
The first leg of the treble here. Over 1200 – a Class 6 race.
Can Desleigh Forster post consecutive race wins with her charge Georgie’s Pride (9). She won a recent trial and was very good last preparation winning several races. Her recent trial would suggest she is very forward, and I think she can get the job done here with Jim Byrne in the saddle.
Ruuca (15) is trained on the Gold Coast by Edmonds Racing and I think that third up and down in the weights he could show up here this weekend. He likes the speed on so can storm home late if he gets those conditions in this race. Robbie Fradd will ride him this weekend.
The Face (16) is second up here for NSW trainers Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou. He likes to race on the speed – just may struggle from barrier 15 and may not be able to cross them without using a fair bit of energy. This may leave him exposed late. Michael Cahill rides him in his first run in QLD.
Keep your eye on the Brian Smith trained Full Nelson (3) who I think didn’t like the quick back up after winning here. He has had two weeks now between runs and will be somewhere in the finish when the whips are cracking late.
Selections:
9 – Georgie’s Pride 15 – Ruuca 16 – The Face 10 – Say Heya Rough chance – (3) Full Nelson
Race 8
A sprint over 1050 metres.
If the rain comes and the track is wet and chops up, I like the chances of the top weight The Odyssey (1) from Kelly Schweida Racing to get home here. Jimmy Orman is aboard. He was very good over 900 metres at the Gold Coast and he is proven on heavy and wet tracks. The other thing I like about his chances is that there is some speed in this race, and he should be able to get a nice trail into the race.
King Klaus (4) just keeps turning up – a wet track won’t bother him – the speed won’t bother him – matter of fact not much does bother him! Drawn wide in barrier 11, I think he may let Spaceboy (5) lead here and take a trail.
Tambo’s Mate (2) was second up in the Weetwood last weekend and was in the blanket finish. Has backed up quickly in the past and won – he looks ideally placed here as well as the high tempo of the race will suit him. Tony Gollan will be looking to post a win with the runner with Ryan Maloney to ride. If the track gets into the heavy range he will appreciate it.
Spaceboy (5) has drawn barrier 1 – loves to jump and lead. He is trained in NSW by Gary Portelli and Stephanie Thornton has been booked for the ride. He did race at Caulfield last start at Group 3 level – drops back in grade and will appreciate this distance.
Selections:
1 – The Odyssey 4 – King Klaus 2 – Tambos Mate 5 – Spaceboy
Race 9
The last race – an extremely competitive field over 1200 metres – let’s hope the rain stays away – I just hate going home wet and soggy after a day at the races!
Look there are some good horses engaged here – BUT I think there is a fair bit of speed in this race that probably would help a back marker to flash home late.
With that in mind I am tipping one at $21 – It’s All Talk - trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted – down on the minimum as well with Jaden Lloyd to ride. She gets in well at the weights. Probably ironic I am tipping this as Josh Fleming will be saying she is named after me – at least I deliver on my talk mate! If she wins this race, it will be the end of you in our weekly tipping competition for sure! The filly resumes here for the stable – has had two solid hit outs in recent trials and I just think that she will be suited with the speed on.
The speed will come from the Graeme Green trained Ahooshu (1) and has won his past three starts. Chris Whiteley has been aboard for the past three runs – it would be great to see Chris get a metro Saturday winner. He is a very good jockey.
Enterprise Pomme (2) is back from a hit and run trip to Sydney last start where she was very good in the Group 2 Furious Stakes – was an awesome effort leading them up and then getting run down late being beaten narrowly by 1 length.
Melissa Taylor trains The Kewess (5) who has been racing very consistently however, can be tardy out of the barriers. Boris Thornton stays aboard this weekend – maybe his magic can get him out with the other runners.
Selections:
11 – It’s All Talk 1 – Ahooshu 2 – Enterprise Pomme 5 – The Kewess Rough chance – (6) Oriental Princess _____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
Looks like a close contest between Jimmy Orman, Jaden Lloyd, and Ryan Maloney. I think Jaden gets the chocolates this week

WINNO V FLEMO
With the races at Toowoomba last weekend I smashed Anthony Collins – something! We did manage to tip 5 winners on the day. Not a bad effort. FLEMO is back this weekend – nothing feels better than giving him a whipping! So, it is back on FLEMO v WINNO this weekend. Be sure to check Facebook on Saturday morning for our updated information where I will post our selections and any late mail!
